You confused financial success with good products. He has played a great short game, at the expense of long term success. Personally, Apple is now firstly a fashion company, second a tech company. If all you care about is a status symbol, then Apple is your company. OSX is the only reason i'm still around, all I can do is scream like the millions of others who want Tim's retirement.

This reminds me of the new star wars movie and the prequels. Sure they were a financial success, but a artistic disaster. Tim COOK IS THE GEORGE LUCUS of APPLE!
Well you are in the minority since Mac unit sales are consistently beat by iPads and iOS devices in general. Proving that people really aren't interested in having a traditional computer anymore. They will still be necessary. But Steve called it 8 years ago. Traditional computers are now the trucks. Like it or not, those are the facts.

Btw, Apple has always been a design focused company. No headline news there. So what exactly is your point they are a "fashion first, tech second company?". People love the Airpods (they cant keep them in stock) as well as apple watches (number one watch in the world sales wise , number one tech watch), iPads outsell macs, tens of millions scooping up new iphones.

Apple still makes the most easy to use products in general, which is why people buy them. The "status symbol" argument is very 2005. Get with it. People love the products for a reason. And its NOT because its simply a status symbol.

Vote with your dollars, if you really hate Apple that much, stop giving them money.

Once again, did they seriously need Dre to make Apple Music?!? I don't recall Spotify or any of the other music services spending $3 billion on a big name to make their (arguably) higher quality applications.

Apple wanted to enter the market running instead of having to do so from scratch. Beats not only had streaming they also had a healthy hardware market and branding. And getting Iovine was worth the money. His behind the scene deals swayed a lot of artists towards Apple. As he is very well respected and connected in the industry.

More competent?? You seriously don’t know who Iovine is do you?

Calm down. Judging from your frequent posts in this thread you really need to chill out. You're getting overly aggravated from posts over the internet. There are more important things to worry about. Go for a run or something.

If that means that Apple Music app will become more user friendly and not a thing that looks and functions like it was made by some complete idiot, then i'm really happy for this.

Apple Music just isn’t that hot

And new beats models have kinda stalled, no?

I do like my solo3 minus headphone clamp

They last forever. Got a good price on Em too and offloaded my solo2’s some time ago

Dr. Dre and Iovine weren't really hired by Apple, nor they hold any real decision power inside the company. They are just there, like someone said before, to give Apple Music "credibility." Iovine didn't even have a formal position with them, and confirmation for this is his departure at the same time as he gets final payment for what he was owed as part of the Beats deal. He was there to make noise regarding the Music service. Dr. Dre is there for hip-hop cred and because Apple agreed to upload that movie (or video?) he made, and Trent Reznor... well, if he was really involved in the interface design for the service like some articles I read stated when the service was introduced... he is the real "persona non grata" for most of you guys. I like most of his music, though.

Do you wake up and plan all these mean comments or you just make it up as you go?

Congratulations Iovine, text me is if you read this

The fact that people are criticizing Jimmy Iovine when Eddy Cue's leadership has left us with the clusterf**k that is Apple's cloud services is just hilarious.

Maybe they should actually heed his advice.

He's leaving God.

Look what happened when Lucifer left God in the Christian faith.

;)
Lucifer didn't leave God. God tossed him out like a rag doll.
By most of the posts here I see MR is full of under informed people on the subject of the music industry.

Losing Jimmy is a big blow to Apple.

You all need to go do some research on just who Jimmy Iovine is in that industry.
Not going to work. MR is the place where uneducated pompous Apple haters inflate their egos against equally uneducated pompous iSheep. You're wasting your time reasoning.
This iphone's battery issue is HUGE..........
Wrong Thread, sir/ma'am/dude.

I pretty much agree with the majority of posters before me. Iovine will not be missed at all. I doubt he’ll be replaced since he didn’t have an official title at Apple. However if he is, hopefully it’s with someone more competent.

Okay, with all due respect, how can you say this? How is JIMMY IOVINE not competent? He's one of the most powerful, respected, and experienced people in the music industry. You don't think he brings some competence to Apple's place in the music industry?

It is fairly usual for the founders to cash in and leave at the end of the lock-in period. He's done well. Good luck to him.

From the outside, he seemed the strongest part of Beats, so him leaving reminds me of why the acquisition seemed an odd choice.
Indeed. When he and Dre 'joined' Apple you just knew they would leave eventually. They were not looking to join that company for the long haul and probably still have other musical projects/ventures they want to spend time on that they could never do as Apple executives.

Any bets on how long before Apple retires the 'Beats' branding?

another mistake by apple to let him go. apple music might not make it without him

It's like no one reads the articles any more or processes the information.

1) Apple his not letting him go. He is (if it is true) choosing to leave
2) This was well understood during the acquisition process. Neither Dre or Jimmy were long for the company -- that was never the intent
3) The long earn-outs for his options had two reasons: a) the help in procuring the non-tangible IP the company had in relationships, etc, and b) lock them up from starting another competing company.

Both parties got exactly what they wanted and anyone who understands how these things work is not surprised at all.

that's not apple music though, thats iCloud music library.

And why do I get iCloud Music Library? That's right: because it's a feature of my Apple Music plan.

And what app do I use to access iCloud Music Library? Oh, yes: Apple Music.

Heck, before there was Apple Music, Apple did have a matching service that I'm told worked better. So, yeah.

I don't have any "hate" for the guy. But IMO, Apple's attempt to delve into the streaming subscription music scene and its acquisition of Beats were both poor decisions. So basically, everyone involved heavily in either of those things are folks I'm happy to see showing themselves out the door at Apple.

As far as I'm concerned, this idea of paying monthly fees to retain permission to stream or listen to the tracks you downloaded from the service is garbage. It was foisted upon people as "the way of the future" - but nothing about it has been good. The music industry itself has suffered under the business model, because it cheapens the value of an artist's work. Practically everyone I know who really loved music has fond recollections of going to that record store and buying the physical tape, LP or CD of their favorite artist, reading through the included liner notes, and proudly adding it to their collection on a shelf or storage rack someplace, where it was on display for everyone to see.

With the idea, now, that all the popular music ever created just sits in some vast "pool" where you can listen to any and all of it, on demand, as long as you're current on some monthly subscription? There's just a psychological change in how much respect a person has for a given album. The artists making it have just as much work to put into the project as ever, but that doesn't come across as well to the listener anymore. When you actually purchased the albums you wanted, you found yourself listening to THOSE songs much more often - because that's what you owned. When it's all equally accessible with a mouse click, it becomes information overload. And if the music service you're on decides to stop carrying an artist's music or album, it's just lost to you.

When Apple Music did such a clunky job of providing the music, on top of those inherent negatives? I can't help but cheer on the exit of the folks responsible. That's all. I wish Iovine well in his future endeavors.

I don’t understand the hate. His résumé is quite astounding.
