Are you the anti-racist superhero?

Came to post inb4 racist comments. Was too late.

Let me also give you some advice. Based on what you've typed, you're the LAST person Dre needs to take advice from. You're clearly ignorant (borderline racist) and nowhere near as successful since you clearly lack business acumen. So why on earth would he listen to anything you have to say.

PS- Enjoy this gif since i know it'll bother you deep down

The word racist doesn't hold any weight anymore.

Beats was valued at about $1 billion in late 2013. It is hard to see how they tripled their worth in the last 8 months or so. I bet stockholders are concerned that Apple is possibly overpaying by an enormous amount.

The Beats streaming service is often touted as the main reason for the acquisition. But it's not like Apple is buying a seasoned, successful company. Beats subscription service is relatively new and has only 200,000 subscribers. One wonders how much Apple paid per subscriber and how much it can expect to get out of that. The idea, of course, will be to grow the service. But that's a multi-billion dollar gamble.

One big problem Apple has is that the music industry doesn't like how much power Apple managed to get over them by becoming the defacto source for buying music and music devices. The industry has been very reluctant to grant Apple rights to stream music for fear of the same thing happening to streaming. Some have theorized that the "real" reason Apple is acquiring Beats is to get Jimmy Iovine's industry connections and/or all of the music streaming rights. But this makes no sense for two main reasons: 1) Beats and Jimmy will just be seen as a front for Apple. 2) Contracts for rights typically end upon acquisition, or if they don't in this case, they'll typically expire yearly anyway.

This is pretty much what I'm thinking, based on what little I know. I don't think my concerns are completely unreasonable. Of course the executives at Apple are much more business savvy than I am, and they have access to information that we don't have. I have also liked their acquisitions in the past, so I trust them somewhat. Nevertheless I remain very skeptical about this one, especially the price paid for it.

I agree that there's a lot to this story we're not getting yet. Here's what I'm thinking (based on what little i know). Apple is impressed by the rapid growth of the beats music subscribers and is worried it could be an itunes killer.

Google was worried the iphone would hinder their ability to "monetize mobile" so they bought Motorola. They were worried about falling behind in the "connected home" so they bought nest. They're worried about connected tv's so they created chromecast and android tv.

Facebook was worried that Instigram and WhatsApp could become facebook killers, so they bought them. 17 billion is nothing if it means facebook can stay relevant.

The rapid growth of Beats subscribers, due to cell carrier partnerships and promotions, might be impressive? Apple may think they are nipping it in the bud early. A 3 billion dollar acquisition might be a small price to pay in the long run, and they get a few extras. Here are the ones that make some sense to me:

-neutralizing a threat to itunes
-better licensing deals
-partnerships with cell carriers to bundle monthly music subscription
-a good algorithm for curating radio stations
-two innovative and well connected ceo's
-all of the above

No more like it would be too stupid to entertain the thought but somehow a racial angle has popped up and now skepticism is equated to racism or ignorance.

Ok Rogifan, please bring in your facts/results/anything that can be permitted as an adequate response as to why this would be a bad deal. You have not posted yet as to why, with a legitimate source, to claim that this would not work.

I.e. these are crappy headphones is not an appropriate response, nor is your abnormally consious trend of going against the grain.

Your sig demonstrates your level of credibility on such issues.

"Dr" Dre has written and "rapped" anti-White racist lyrics in his "music", and gets a 3 billion dollar deal with Apple, meanwhile every White person who references even the slightest nuance pertaining to blacks is fired from their job and publicly humiliated. It makes me wonder who the real racists are.

3.2 billion...

not for some cutting edge japanese A.I. or Robotics company making the great, amazing innovative strides, companies who desperately need the resources to bring the brilliant sci-fi future to our lives sooner, but...

cheap headphones. when they already supply the world with their own cheap headphones.

3.2 billion...

One uninspiring development after another, like another company run by bean counters...

Ever heard of Eminem? Surely, even you know that he is white. And wait, he comes from the "ghetto". You really should listen to Dre's music, instead of reading the lyrics, and you may actually draw a more intelligent conclusion. He IS an angry man and he expressed himself through music. He's not a prophet. He is a person, just as yourself, that happens to be musically inclined.

I'd like to stress the point that it doesn't matter whether you enjoy his music, but rather that millions of people all around the world do and, whether you would like to admit it or not, he is a very intelligent person an business man.

You and everyone else opposed to this deal has not responded as to why this is not a good deal. Again, no one wants your racist(and thats what it is) opinions.

Unfortunately, your lack of logic has not masked your racism.

Sadly there is a double standard about the use of the N-word, but you're resorting to hyperbole by claiming this video makes Apple a racist company. Feel free to puke anyway.
It makes them racist by associating and validating a person that makes openly racist comments. There is no place in the world for that word, no matter of the skin color of the person saying it. It's disgusting. I would rather not glorify a company associating with this type of individual and rewarding him. Sorry.

Not really sure how it is a double standard. It is a diffusion of a racist slur by means of reappropriation:

It fascinates me how there are elements of life that some Americans can completely ignore and act as if it never existed.

SubjectED and subjectOR are two different things. It is unfortunate that there are many people of color who still use that word after it being used against them as a slur for centuries.

It was used against black people for a ridiculously long time, hopefully it will not take as long for black people to stop using against themselves.

Ok so whys this happening??

To expand their marketshare in the realm of music/entertainment/lifestyle and to increase revenue and profits.

Nothing less than that. Cook is with it, the Board of Directors must be with it.

Really? Is this the best explanation you can come up with? The Rap scene is so desperate that they had to get into the Electronic scene by creating TRAP music and guess what? It is Rap with a T added in the front talk about Hipster.

You have no clue what trap music is. get over yourself.

Its funny. Half the people in this thread calling beats headphones crap have probably never even used them. As someone that has to travel frequently I have used many different brands of headsets and the latest studio wireless are the best I've ever owned. The noise cancellation isn't as great as the qc3 or qc15 but the convenience of not having any stupid wires and still getting great sound and noise canceling is well worth the 400. Nothing even comparable right now

Before this rumor surfaced was anyone saying that Apple needed to get into the overpriced headphone market?

What if Apple has decided that in order to grow they need to reinvent themselves as a fashion company? That's basically what Beats is.

I still think this deal will have something to do with iWatch...

He'll fit right in, Tim Cook isn't a real chef.

That literally just made me spit out my Lemsip (man flu drink) out when I read it!

Best post on MR ever, thank you! :D
