Apple picked the wrong year to neglect the facetime camera. If this had been any other year, it probably would've flown under the radar and received little attention. But for pandemic 2020, the camera has become much more important. Although it wouldn't prevent me from buying a new macbook, the 720p camera is very 2012-ish.

I honestly don't see whats wrong with the camera, in fact, I think John Gruber looked just as clear or better than Joanna using a separate camera. Kinda over rated to be honest. Would a 1080p be better? Yes! Is it detrimental? No!

Limitations in physics: nah we can spew negativity, don't need to mind those.
Limitations in the flavor of webmeeting software used: nah we can spew negativity, don't need to mind those.

All they want to do is spew negativity all over the place, not being held back by reality.

Really if you want a better picture out of that 720p camera: turn on the lights. Brightness in the room makes the job of that minuscule sensor and tiny lens a lot easier and with picking up a lot less noise.

And for those instances that you can use 1080p or 2160p or so: get a decent external camera with a decent lens and light setup - most call the place where they set that up a studio, not a laptop btw. FWIW: in that case the camera, lens and light setup might each individually cost as much as the entire entry-level laptop Apple is selling.

Despite everything you just said, the camera still sucks.

It’s that extra $2 Tim Cook is willing to give up per device.

He wants to make sure he has a full wave pool with dolphins, lined by gold bricks and live coral with a helicopter holding a diamond studded diving board and won’t settle for less
The issue couldn’t possibly have less to do with cost. Ever hear of physics? Familiar at all with optics?

And your description of Cook’s lifestyle likewise couldn’t be further from the truth. He’s very frugal, and has a very modest house.

I would suggest light on your face. Otherwise bright backlighting will reduce exposure and make your face look dark.

The irony of so many commenters furiously typing away on their retina display devices about how 720p is good enough is palatable. Zoom will upgrade when device manufactures give the laptops better cameras.

Indeed a good light setup is critical before you start judging the results.

When I read your comment I saw this posted by another user:

That way of lighting up the room is about the opposite of what you need to do to get your face across to your colleagues and it'll look bad all the way from 480i to 8K no matter what you have in between. whatever camera you use.

1080p is a red herring, and completely unnecessary. A 720p sensor is more than sufficient. It’s not a resolution issue. 720p HDTV looks awesome, even when blown up to a 65” display.
Trust me, if you put your glasses on then you'll notice the difference between 720p and higher resolutions.

Nope, they don’t exist. The previous posters who also claimed this $2 camera upgrade are also wrong.

Not sure who sent you guys that talking point lol.
I don't care if it's 1080p. I mean I do care, but the main issue is quality. The quality is awful, even for 720p. It needs improvement ... even if it stays 720p.

Nobody is asking for thinness. We want a better webcam that’s not from the 80s. The tech is available btw.

so many of us are ready to buy but want a good webcam!
Maybe you want thicker and heavier MacBooks, but I certainly don't want that.

Can you explain what you mean by "tech is available"? I looked through various higher-end PC notebooks and all have 720p webcams.

Have you seen how thick the lid of this Pixelbook is? From the very link you posted:

That thing looks to be… (guesstimating from the total thickness of 10.3 mm) 4mm thick! With no taper, but rather a big drop-off at the edge!

She's bitching about a camera that looks decent against many web cams my associates have on their laptops during zoom calls. Often they are on PC laptops and the camera quality is horrible. Sure a 1080p camera would be great but she's acting like everyone else on zoom calls has a 1080p camera on their laptop during zoom calls. She needs to shut up.

This woman is stupider than dirt! A 1080p webcam is not going to fix poor lighting which is very common for the majority of people who work from home and in an office, which screws up picture quality. A 1080p camera is not going to fix low speed internet which is also common and that ruins picture quality. She just wants to S*** on Apple in order to win some fans of her stupid ass.

Oh man, while I agree with your points, perhaps there is no need to use such harsh language!!!

Then every other company would've been crapped on too because the majority of every company's line of laptops use a 720p camera and often they are of poor quality. My insurance office has weekly zoom meets and some of our agents are loaded with $$$$ yet they have the crappiest PC laptop webcams. It's very common. So to expect Apple fo "fix" their cameras is not going to make anyone but the recipient a little happier to see a clearer picture. I find it funny how she's more concerned how she looks to others but she's not complaining about her colleagues video quality on zoom. She's full of crap is she thinks anyone believes that all her colleagues that don't use Macs have perfect PQ.

Worse language is used here against Apple daily.
True but Apple is a company not a person; And if someone were to use such language on Tim Cook or Craig, then I would discourage that too...Anyway, have a good day and I wish the same for that lady too! 😇
