Pancreatic problems can lead to malabsorption

The pancreas produces enzymes that are needed to digest food. If whatever treatment he had for the cancer harmed the secretion of the enzymes, that could have led to malabsorption. If that was the case, then it may be possible to supply the missing enzymes exogenously in the form of capsules or some such. So recurrence of the cancer isn't the only possible explanation.

well that's good news that it's not cancer again. but i hope that they can figure out what exactly is causing the problem and can get him heathly again.

Evidently what's left of his pancreas may not be making the enzymes... unless this has more to do with diabetes... but that makes no sense as I am sure Steve can afford a pump and the medical support needed to make it work efficiently. My wife has had one for 6-7 years, so I know it's not rocket science.
They removed parts of the pancreas, small bowel and did some bypassing... that means the original cancer spread from the pancreas or they just would have removed the pancreas.
Seems reasonable to me to assume that the cancer has returned, and Steve is in trouble.

I hope he makes a speedy recovery and is healthy. He has the best doctors in the world I'm sure and they will work to help him. Just think, if your the doctor to cure steve jobs then you just built one hell of a reputation for yourself. So i'm sure they will do thier best to make sure the worlds leading CEO returns to the helm of the best technology company in the world.

We wish him all the best and will pray from him daily. Gods speed steve.

Methinks, unfortunately, that Jobs' health might be related to his veganism. Some people's metabolisms and veganism don't jive. A friend who became diabetic after years of being vegan almost died because she couldn't get the nutrition she needed, granted, she also refused to go to the doctor in favor of holistic medicine. Those people generally end up either taking a quite of supplements to get their bodies right, start to eat meat, or live in a perpetually malnourished state.

For Jobs, I would think being AWAY from work would be more stressful!

Oh yeah. You could say that.
However, I wish him a speedy recovery. Also, vegetarians are capable of being completely healthy, and actually live longer that omnivores- as long s they have a healthy/protein rich diet.

Steve is known to be a vegan, which is one step beyond vegetarianism. I'm not saying a vegan can't be healthy, but if they have other issues that are being complicated by their dietary choices, then they might need to adopt a more conventional diet.

Steve Jobs, Apple, wild speculation

It is interesting to read the wild speculation about Steve Jobs and his health.

As a health professional I can tell you we have no right to his medical records. They are protected by law. I cannot even look at my own health records without cause and permission and then access is limited. People who work in hospitals/clinics have been terminated for looking at their own records. Read the HIPAA regulations. It's true.

As a surgeon I did Whipple operations. As an anesthesiologist I anesthetize patients for this procedure. The tumor in the pancreas may result in a partial pancreatectomy or total pancreatectomy. With the Whipple operation there is a partial pancreatectomy. When the head of the pancreas is removed, the duodenum, the gall bladder & the biliary duct system, and lower part of the stomach are also removed which necessitates restructuring the bile drainage system and re-establishing the continuity of the intestinal tract. This is how the operation is done, not because the cancer has spread. It is a complicated procedure, requires a prolonged recovery but in Steve Jobs case seems to have saved his life.

Five year survival from pancreatic cancer is rare indeed, less than 5% for the routine adenocarcinoma of the pancreas. The fact that he had an endocrine tumor makes sense and is logically the reason he has survived this far.

All the speculation about his health is just that, speculation. As I mentioned before, he is under no obligation to reveal his health status. I have not read one entry from anyone who has examined Steve Jobs or read is medical records.

Personally I am a big Apple fan with a couple MacBooks, iPod Nano for the wife and iPod Touch for myself, Apple TV and waiting patiently for AT&T service in North Dakota so I can have an iPhone. I am grateful for the leadership and insight of Steve Jobs in providing me with unbelievable computer hardware and software. I am looking forward to a long and exciting future with more Apple products.

I wish him well. As a physician I understand the stress and difficulties he is going through. I pray for his recovery and for his family.

A couple personal beliefs....

God doesn't cause cancer or any other disease.

Prayer has a positive effect on medical outcomes, there are studies out there if you are willing to look at the literature on the subject.

Have a great day everyone. It was -46 in Northwestern North Dakota this morning!

I agree, most of what we are hearing is complete speculation, most of it poorly informed. Those who insist that Steve Jobs disclose his medical records are wrong. But those who insist that Steve Jobs has no obligation to be more forthright about his medical conditions are also wrong. Steve and Apple have grossly mishandled this entire event, exposing investors in a public corporation to unnecessary risk. Depending on what happens next, it's quite possible that shareholder lawsuits will be the result.

Honestly, I'll agree it seems to me that Jobs is in some sort of trouble, but I wouldn't even care to guess at the causes. My reasonings for him being in some sort of major trouble is for a couple of things.

1. Most CEO's don't take medical leave, and the people that do rarely go back. If this wasn't a serious issue, he would have not notified anyone publicly and taken an extended leave/vacation.

2. The MacWorld Expo departure is a good sign that Jobs keynote speeches are not going to be happening as often, or not at all.

3. There was some good speculation about new products (Mac Mini, iMac) that would be released for the MacWorld, but IMHO were purposely delayed to bolster stock prices after this sort of news comes out.

I hope he gets better but I'm invested in Apple for their products and not for the CEO, and I hope that others will feel the same.

our thinest ceo yet

hasn't anyone been paying attention to apples trend in product design,
thin is in. This is all part of the plan. steve gets thinner, then he slowly gets fatter making every new product look even more thinner than it actually is.

get well is all that matters!

I think everyone has been touched by cancer in one way or another. Most of this speculation about the man's health seems to be fueled by greed and as a stock holder and big fan of not only Steve Jobs but Apple, and as a human, I will keep him in my prayers. The world is definitely better with him in it.

Seems like this board is more filled with stock speclators, doctors, doctor wannabe's and pseudo-doctors than Macintosh fans. The prime concern for Mr. Jobs health or lack of health focuses on the rise and fall of Apple stock. Maybe that's why so many deep pocket doctors have found the time to sniff around to see how their stock will do. Sorry guys. The 'fan boys' know as little as you about what makes Steve run, or not run.

My humble view is that neither Steve Jobs nor Apple Corp owe anybody anything but to keep on trying to make products that innovate and sell. They want to survive, not for you, but for the corporate entity and their own livelihoods. This keeps the company viable longer.

All people come and go. All companies come and go. I love the Mac and have since the late 1980's, but I know that this is just a point in time and the Macintosh era is maybe good for another five or ten years, but it's not forever. Innovation and change just keep on coming. That's 'progress'.

Closing thought is that it does not seem smart to predicate and fuel speculation on anything with the key operative variable being the continued good health of a single individual like Mr. Jobs or any other one person for that matter.

Apple will NEVER be forthcoming about information regarding Steve's health as a way not to shake stock prices.

This approach has the opposite affect. It creates uncertainty, and investors hate uncertainty. It's worth reading the source article:

Investor lawsuits are a distinct possibility.

House

Reading this thread is like a really bad (or good!) episode of House.

We'll find out it was all psychosomatic -- just like everything else in life.

Investor lawsuits are a distinct possibility.

All because they can't help engaging in baseless speculation? Because they're somehow not satisfied with the explanation given and yet have no basis for doubting it beyond wanting to be mad about something?

No, just the opposite. The explanations provided to investors by Steve and Apple may have been deliberately deceptive. I didn't want to believe this myself, but I am certainly beginning to suspect that they've been less than honest in what has been disclosed to date. That's simply not allowed under SEC regulations, and if Apple and Steve continue to be evasive, an investor lawsuit may be the only way for those of us with money tied up in Apple to find out. I hope it doesn't come to that, but I increasingly fear that it will.

Apple's core is like sourdough:it's a starter

Jobs was gone from Apple before, for nearly 10 years, and it survived, grew exponentially, and prospered. Despite the high marketing and management drama, and occasional public missteps of the 80s & 90s, the core of the company never abandoned its main focus: product development, and the elevation of smart techies. Jobs is a superstar, but Edison didn't live forever, and now we have electric cars. (...only took 100 years!)

reply to: "...I hope he gets better but I'm invested in Apple for their products and not for the CEO, and I hope that others will feel the same."

I think anyone that believes Apple will grind to a halt should Steve Jobs leave the business (for any reason) is amazingly naive. The overall business is in much better shape than when he was forced out previously - the company has evolved and is much stronger than before.

The board of directors, which have been assembled are clearly competent, creative and diligent individuals. Together they are an awesome team. I'm sure that they are influenced and managed by Steve Jobs but my impression is that they are responsible for their actions and innovations. I feel that Jobs' takes a proactive role overseeing their work but largely isn't involved with their day-to-day activities.

Again it would be naive to imagine that Steve Jobs micromanages every aspect of this organiziation. As such, if he leaves the business it will continue to be innovative and cutting edge. The new CEO, would have to share Apple's strategic vision and desire for innovation, delivered with clear thinking. These candidates already exist within Apple.

Steve Jobs and Woz's DNA course through the veins of Apple. History has shown that if the company deviates from this ethos it will fail... The shareholders and the board won't make these mistakes again.

Disney
Ford (up until the last few years)
Microsoft

Are just a small number of influential 'global' businesses, which have survived the passing of key / original figures in their business Apple will be no different - it's time to change our mindset that suggests otherwise...

Ford is doing pretty good in the Asian markets, but poorly here & in Europe to a lesser degree.

You forget that Disney was all pretty much BUNK and ready for serious sales until Jobs was in charge!

Many former members from Apple that shared in the vision of Steve Jobs are no longer there. Jon Rubinstein, former head of hardware engineering & executive staff. Mike Bell, vice president, CPU Software, in the Mac Hardware Division - being a part of Apple for 16years involved in Airport product line, and low-level software for all Mac hardware products. Talk about vision! Both of them work at Palm, Inc now.

Sure there is Phil Schiller, very passionate of Apple and a die-hard Apple Geek if I've ever seen one, but does he have the gusto to inspire others at Apple to go forward? Who's that young looking dude that introduced to us Time Machine? Forestall? He's the person that I think can inspire innovation & the right emotion to put flames into employees to think beyond their desks, inspire others for new innovations and deliver a speech that invokes positive emotions from those at a trade show - recall how uplifted you felt with Time Machines introduction?!! Recall the Push-Service?!

Apple's business will not grind to a halt, they are completely liquid in terms of assets & have NO DEBTS! they can operate in low sales numbers for many months ahead and still deliver great products - but CAN they without proper direction?!

At the heart of Apple is innovation, but delivering products on the cutting edge I'm not so sure of. Let me explain.

Many of Apple's products we & the industry all love mostly because of the elegant design - in the physical part of the product & in the software design. The MacBookPro, MacBook, and Mac Pro are all cutting edge now, but their product cycles are TOO long to continue this perception before the next hardware update. Dell, HP, Acer, Voodoo all of products that expand beyond the consumer lineup and their product cycles are updated every 6mths; beating Apple by 2-4mths. If we look at the iPhone, the original when delivered, hardware wise it was not cutting edge, software definately was! It took 1 full year for Apple to overhaul that business to offer 3G, more availability with larger distribution and initially great hardware warranty support! However, again in less than 8 mths we've only seen a memory storage size double, and a few firmware updates. This is NOT being on the cutting edge, especially with a piss poor camera - don't argue saying the camera is not important if it wasn't Apple would NOT have offered one in ALL models to begin with and if it wasn't they'd offer a model without one at a slightly cheaper price. I have my own opinions about the iPhone - not favorable - but I'll admitt it demonstrates software innovation & display of technology embracing the end user. Problem is, multi-tasking still isn't truely there! What happened to the Push-Service that Forestall offered? Has Apple forgotten about it, or is there a patent licensing issue they are still working out!??

MacBooks never where cutting edge nor showed much innovation until the unibody's. Pricing was always great which helped its viability in the marketplace.

I think its time Apple push for OS X Server and the Xserve, MBP, and Mac Pro more for business' truely highlighting capability, lower total cost of ownership if they can, and the widely available software for business! Excuses like AutoCAD not being available - Apple Software Development team should have a small group tailored to offering & working with large software company's to create software for OS X so that this is no longer an excuse for most company's.

The new CEO, would have to share Apple's strategic vision and desire for innovation, delivered with clear thinking. These candidates already exist within Apple.

And who are they? Tim Cook is a great executive, with clear thinking, but does he share Apple's strategic vision & desire for innovation, not just organizational management?!

"may have been"

That's what I'm saying the baseless speculation is. What is the reason to doubt the explanation given?

While I think the whole "keeping him in my prayers" thing is a bunch of hooey (after all, didnt "god" put him in the situation in the first place) I really hope for his sake and **** it, lets be selfish here, my sake as a lover of Apple products, that Steve gets well soon.

Well - if you believe the the Clockwork God Theory - no, God did NOT put him in this position. Silly statement - from another in the long line of God hating God bashing selfish American's.

Weather you believe in God or not (I have my moments as well) the fact is many people do so please have some respect.

Sigh

I wish my wife had a food absorption problem, as long as it's not fatal of course.

But, I do hope that Jobs gets better and not just so that he can come back to Apple. He's revived the company and I'm thankful for that.

Be careful what you wish for. My wife has had numerous problems with her
digestive system over the last five years, been in and out of hospitals, seen
doctors and specialists, been diagnosed with everything from diverticulitis
(unheard of in a late thirty-something year old) to celiac (if so appears to
be in remission now).

Believe me, you don't want to ever see the kind of things we've seen in
your spouse.

I can understand the desire for spousal weight loss but you don't want
anything in that area going wrong because of the fact it's an interdependent
system and one little thing can make the balance go off for the entire
works.

Trust me, you don't want to make friends with the "red bucket at 3 a.m.".
