* Must have strong problem solving skills and strong working knowledge of radiation performance. Antenna and wave propagation theoretical background is essential.

Hell, I could get that job just based on the info I presented in my "Occam's razor" theory thread... :p

Man, if there was ever some evidence that something massively wrong happened at some point during the very late stages of the iPhone 4 development and testing phase, this is it. The theory presented last week that perhaps, just perhaps Apple's entirely obsessive "secret" nature and keeping the iPhone 4 inside a fake case to mask it's looks could be the backfire that caused all this crap with respect to the hands-on skin-on-metal contact that I and many many others have been pointing out is a no-no for cell phones and microwave energy radiation.

My god... I know we had some ground to stand on but, this pretty much confirms it. One would think Apple would have 50 Antenna Engineers on staff already, or more...

Will hiring 3 more actually make a difference now?

Antenna Engineer - iPad/iPhone

http://jobs.apple.com/index.ajs?BID=1&method=mExternal.showJob&RID=55854&CurrentPage=2

Responsibilities: Define and implement antenna system architecture to optimize the radiation performance for wireless portable devices. The candidate should be able to design antennas suitable for wireless handheld devices with excellent radiation performance, including TRP, TIS, SAR, and EMC. Work closely with other RF and antenna design engineers, mechanical and industrial designers, and EMC engineers to integrate the antenna design in our products. The candidate will be expected to performance radiation performance measurements, create test plans, execute them, publish test reports, provide feedback to the other design engineers, and lead some of the manufacturing of antenna.

Skills and Experience:
* 10+ years of experience in RF with at least 5 years in antenna design and test for wireless consumer products.
* MSEE required, PhD is preferred.
* Must have working experience of antenna design and tests, anechoic chambers, and RF test equipment. Hands-on is a must.
* Must have strong problem solving skills and strong working knowledge of radiation performance. Antenna and wave propagation theoretical background is essential.
* Experience with different wireless communication systems such as GSM/GPRS/EDGE, 802.11, Bluetooth, etc., including the corresponding system level specifications (e.g. ETSI 51.010, 51.05…) is essential.
* Experience with regulatory requirements and process for wireless consumer devices, including FCC, PTCRB, CTIA, ETSI, TIA/EIA, etc.
* Excellent communication skills required, both written & verbal.
* Detail oriented - taking data, using Excel, and making meaningful tables/graphs/averages.

THIS SHOULD BE FRONT PAGE NEWS IMHO.... someone definitely got fired for the iPhone screw up!!!!

My thoughts exactly.. How could they test a phone thoroughly when its en closed in a case? I hope the guy who "lost" the phone wasn't the one that will be replaced by these new hires..

surely if it was a hardware problem they would stop selling handsets

Apple tends to not overtly acknowledge problems. They prefer that customers find and bring in problem units, which they then replace. This is not only cheaper, but has the ironic side effect of making the customer feel extra well taken care of.

For example, there was a group of original iPhones with touchscreens that tended to fail in strips. Apple waited about a year and then quietly put a bulletin on their support site giving serial numbers whose warranty was extended for this problem. They never put out a press release though, nor notified the owners ahead of time.

Before Gray Powell's linkedIn entry was removed, I believe it said that he was responsible for iPhone RF testing.

I wonder...

If he spent all his time testing that prototype with it inside the that fake iPhone 3GS shell... holy poop on a stick, Batman!!! :D

Can you imagine what's going on inside 1 Infinite Loop right now? What I wouldn't give to be a cyber-fly with HD cameras flyin' around in the building... oh geez, the stuff you'd see and hear.

Have you already read this? Interesting...
http://fscked.co.uk/post/751030001/m...4-signal-issue

I just came back from my phone provider (SFR, I am located in Paris, France). First of all i have asked if they had iPhone 4 available...they said no and this at least for 3 weeks. I then asked if they had returns...they said not so many but a huge number of people are complaining about that reception issue (no service within 30 sec).
When i read that it will only happen in area where the signal is not strong i will question that statement. I can tell you that in Paris we have a very strong signal and antennas all over the place! I am actually glad not having the chance to get the iPhone 4 at launch and i am eager to see Apple's (real/reasonnable) feedback on this issue. I doubt, like many others that it might be a SW issue. And last friday my phone provider told me they would get iPhone 4 this week (today actually) and told me they just received a note from Apple that it will take them at least 3 more weeks to deliver...to me it sounds that they have quietly stop production and are checking what is really going on with that frigging antenna.

Two comments:

1. On the open position at Apple for an Antenna Engineer, and the hyperbolic jump to the conclusion that someone was fired. It could simply be that someone retired, decided to take a better offer elsewhere, or for any number of other reasons moved on.

2. On the original subject of this thread about Steve Jobs comment about the signal strength issue. If you read the complete report on mentioned on the home page of our hosts you will find that they state in their long dissertation on the iPhone 4 antenna that for one reason or another Apple apparently messed up by not putting a coating on the antenna after putting it outside where it could be touched. They also said that a case will solve the problem. They also said that Steve was correct in what he said about the issue and have graphs to prove it. Both with prior iPhones and competitors.

Could Steve had been a little more polite in his answer? Perhaps but he evidently was truthful.

I have my iPhone 4 in the iFrogz case and have no problems. It was first put in a case for protection against dropping----it is glass front and back.

Has anyone been denied a full refund? If that is the case, then shame on Apple.

Yes. Many people. Apple's official policy is that since this is not a real problem, you must pay a restocking fee. Some have managed to get the fee waived at the discretion of the store manager, however.

That's great & all, but what are the people who don't wanna use a case supposed to do?

I have owned many high priced mobiles in my time, & I have never so much as dropped one of them a single time. I am careful....it's that simple.

Apart from using a screen protector, I have an aversion to cases. A mobile's design play a big role in my decision as a consumer, & especially when you factor in how Jobs couldn't say enough on how beautiful the iPhone4 is, it shouldn't be a prerequisite to use a case to gain full telephony usability.

Funny, they don't mention CDMA.

Jobs big mouth and arrogant attitude overrides common sense, and the commitment to ship a high quality product. Advised of the problem (which he denies) by his underlings long before the actual ship date, he shows his true colors (screw the customer) and orders it to ship anyway. No surprise.

I think you are personalizing this way too much. Jobs is just one person at the second largest corporation in the S&P 500. Even Jobs has people to answer to, believe it or not, and he can't just do things because he feels like it unless there is a business justification.

As far as i've seen and experienced, it is a non issue. My iPhone 4 is perfect. Same for my girlfriend's iPhone. No problems with losing signal when holding it "that way", proximity sensor or anything else.
