I might have to return mine, antenna issue is bad, battery life sucks. I keep hoping for a statement or something. Its going to suck to buy another invisible shield though.

Glad all the americans will get the broken phones and then the rest of us get the new batch of fixed ones. Thanks for being hardware beta testers! :)

surely if it was a hardware problem they would stop selling handsets

No. I don't think so. Too much at stake.

I said this in another forum. If nothing else - I think a bean counter was brought in either before or after it hit the media to determine cost of replacements/exchanges vs recall and as of now - recall is not an option.

Too expensive and would take too long.

I would imagine that Steve is pretty pissed. I believe he believes there is either no issue or wants public opinion to determine there's really no issue. And right now that's not happening. I am sure internally, there are memos going around which basically state "plug the hole" meaning - just fix the situation. And that doesn't mean with the phone. I mean with the PR.

I also have NO doubt that whatever software fix comes about - that it will be positioned as a fix "for some owners who experienced occasional low signals"

IE - not a mass problem. And not a NO signal problem. It will be positioned in such a way it basically says "just shut up now"

Anything more - IE Bumpers/gift cards/etc to be given out admits a more widespread problem which they won't want to admit. Better to keep denying and state that it's only affecting a "small" select few

samcraig:

Well, look what you did with an email... ;)

As someone having issues, as noted around countless posts and threads, I'll just that I appreciate what you've done by speaking out about the issue(s) you've had, and I considered it a catalyst when I got my iPhone 4 Wednesday and started to have exactly the same - and in my particular situation much much worse - types of problems.

I hope it all works out in the end for all of us current owners and you all end up with working devices at least to degrees you're all happy with. I won't be an owner for much longer, depending on how soon Apple comes up with this so-called still completely unofficial "fix" because I'll be returning mine at some point soon after.

But thanks, just the same.

Thanks. I happen to get the luck of the draw. I wrote a short (very short) and simple email (well an original and follow up) just to gauge Apple's take on the "issue" and was one of the few initially responded to. The response I got was troublesome to me as I'm in Marketing/PR and have been for over 20 years. I was surprised to get a response from Steve (well - Apple) let alone one that basically negated any issue. I know MR isn't the general populous - but I did know that discussions would be rampant about this issue or non-issue. People would be divided. And I wanted to make sure that Arn had this information to post officially so that if there was a debate - it was based on an official statement - not just "the Apple CSR I spoke to"

Who knew that my emails + ones that some others got as well would wind up referenced by CNN. NYT, PC Magazine, and just about everywhere else. Crazy.

Not for cell phone frequencies for two different reasons.

Old analog TV frequencies were very roughly the size of a human body or limb. That's why you could touch an old TV antenna, and improve the picture. Whereas the wavelength of 1.9 GHz is about 16 cm. A quarter wavelength would be about 4 cm. Are you 4 cm tall?

The second reason is the severe loss propagating through a high-resistance bag of salt water (you), versus a low-resistance metal wire. The loss would warm you up slightly, much like food cooking in your microwave oven. By the law of conservation of energy, any RF energy warming you up is not getting to the cell phone radio chips.
Then I have another question regarding this. Don't know what technique a car key uses to communicate with a car but let's say that I can unlock my car from 20 meters, after that it doesn't work. But if I put the car key to my head I can stand 30 meters away, what's the deal with that?

Not entirely. The affected hardware might be lot specific. Meaning that only some of the lots are effected with the problematic reception issue. So in the end Apple would get their money from the person at fault, which is the supplier. As someone mentioned already it would cost them more not to ship the phones out. Of course, some companies will run a component out of spec causing the problem but in the end the supplier pays. I can name specific phones that had problems but the provider continued to ship the phones out. Plus not shipping out would mean Apple made a mistake that would never happen under Steve's watch as it's a "non issue."

I am on Orange in the UK and I get this problem in spades!

The signal strangth certainly goes when I pick up the phone, but it also seems to be continually poor.

Micro-SIM in iPhone 4 gives me 1 bar and GPRS even on a desk.

Micro-SIM in iPad 3G gives me 4 bars and 3G (admittedly with iOS3.2).

This might be a 'non-issue' for Steve, but I depend on my phone when I am on-call and it is an issue for patients would need me!

I can't believe that the sum total of Apple's PR releases have been from Steve! Is their silence because they are stalling and the problem is inherent with the design?

Perhaps they shouldn't have hidden the phones in fake Iphone 3g cases when they were testing it!

Sweet Jesus, you are a doctor on call to assist with life and death situations and are relying on a cellular phone to get contacted under those circumstances?

Please tell me you don't work in my area!

Jobs at Apple today:

Antenna Engineer - iPad/iPhone

http://jobs.apple.com/index.ajs?BID=1&method=mExternal.showJob&RID=55854&CurrentPage=2

Responsibilities: Define and implement antenna system architecture to optimize the radiation performance for wireless portable devices. The candidate should be able to design antennas suitable for wireless handheld devices with excellent radiation performance, including TRP, TIS, SAR, and EMC. Work closely with other RF and antenna design engineers, mechanical and industrial designers, and EMC engineers to integrate the antenna design in our products. The candidate will be expected to performance radiation performance measurements, create test plans, execute them, publish test reports, provide feedback to the other design engineers, and lead some of the manufacturing of antenna.

Skills and Experience:
* 10+ years of experience in RF with at least 5 years in antenna design and test for wireless consumer products.
* MSEE required, PhD is preferred.
* Must have working experience of antenna design and tests, anechoic chambers, and RF test equipment. Hands-on is a must.
* Must have strong problem solving skills and strong working knowledge of radiation performance. Antenna and wave propagation theoretical background is essential.
* Experience with different wireless communication systems such as GSM/GPRS/EDGE, 802.11, Bluetooth, etc., including the corresponding system level specifications (e.g. ETSI 51.010, 51.05…) is essential.
* Experience with regulatory requirements and process for wireless consumer devices, including FCC, PTCRB, CTIA, ETSI, TIA/EIA, etc.
* Excellent communication skills required, both written & verbal.
* Detail oriented - taking data, using Excel, and making meaningful tables/graphs/averages.

:(, this happen on my iPhone too..

if i hardly hold it.
