Steve Jobs has been replying to people in this nasty terse manners for years. There are other examples posted in this very forum. But since it's about flash or Google, you Jobs sycophants slap each other on the back, claiming "That's our Steve, straight to the point" and rate the topic a positive.

Now that it's about something that will affect you negatively, you're all in shock and accuse the original poster of being a liar and a shill. When the email is demonstrated to be authentic, then it must have been someone else using his account. Finally when you accept it was him you're outraged at how he can treat customers this way.

This is how he treats people, nobody should be surprised. Get a clue.

This MAJOR ISSUE is making MAJOR HEADLINES including the front page of the NEW YORK TIMES!!!!!!!

Bad PR doesn't get any worse than that!

Longtme SAD Apple fan

I hate complainers who complain just for the sake of complaining. Can't stand them. But THIS is a significant issue, and unacceptable in today's technological advancements. It's like they give with one hand, and take with the other.

I'll be close to an Apple store next weekend and I plan on going by to have my iPhone replaced. If this TRULY is a non-issue, they should have no problem replacing the phones that DO show this "MINOR" problem.. right?!

Exactly. If it's a non issue - then once we get it replaced the new one will be just fine. It's a widespread problem and it's only launch day. Give it a week everybody will know about it.

I'm baffled at the amount of comments defending apple and thinking a bumper case will fix this.

What are you nuts? I've been on Apple products since I was in college, 15 years ago, and I think they kick ass, but THIS is a DEFECTIVE product.

No one in their right mind would pay one dollar for a product that doesn't work. WTF?

the iphone is a phone! not an ipod touch.

If you can't make calls on your left hand (which is the hand many use to make calls) or if you need a piece of rubber to make it work, it should be RECALLED!

Argghhh!!!

I'm keeping the 3GS Rotten:apple:

You can't be this dense. If people didn't react in this manner, there would be no need for tech support to exist. There would just be Returns Support. People with major tech related issues require tech support. An issue such as "my iPhone is dropping every single call I make" requires tech support. If unresolved, then they can move on. Enough with the fanboy garbage. Please.

Hardly a fanboy here. I'm a 3G owner who decided to switch carriers before iPhone 4 was released because I'm tired of dealing with dropped calls, a well-documented problem with all iPhones.

My point was that if your complaining on this forum about this problem, you know you're not alone. Who knows how widespread it is, but it is big enough to make the front page of tomorrow's New York Times. Getting a case number from tech support will do little in the near term as your phone is still unusable. As a minimum, I would exchange it and see what happens. To each his own.

Personally, I'd rather sit on the sidelines and let others work through the issues. Again, to each his own.

Ouch, one is held in my hand, the other on my desk (as another commentator posted). I'm actually very surprised.

I did about 10 tests using the Speed Test app.

With half the tests the times it was on the desk had the fastest download speeds and the other half it was faster when I was holding the phone. It was completely random and fluctuated pretty bad.

The speed fluctuates even when I do speed tests on a wired PC. Honestly I don't see these tests meaning much unless it's been tested extensively.

I wasn't defending Steve's response, I was more responding to the death grip comments. I know Steve will answer things the way he answers and people will read into it whatever they want. All I know is, the way I hold my phone, I have had no problems.

Too much of this thread was just bashing without any pics or evidence.

i acknowledge though that its unfortunate that some people are experiencing this issue with reception, but people who complain will have a louder voice than those that do not, especially in these forums. People will think this is a rampant issue, if both sides aren't represented.

A rampant issue? It's an issue with EVERY iphone 4. Seriously, what part of that aren't you getting? Even Apple admits that.

love the fanboy defense replies! :D

"Dude, it's no problem, I just adjusted how I hold my phone... it's like Steve said: non-issue!" Steve/Apple can do no wrong, ever!

This, and the shattered iPhone that fell out of a guys pocket while he was sitting down aren't "non-issues"... they're serious problems. The phone hasn't even been out for a week.

Unbelievable to what extent they go on to defend Steve.

Apple better act soon or I can see "CLASS ACTION LAWSUIT" papers already on their way to Mr. Jobs.

Maybe I'm imagining it but I'm wondering if iOS 4 isn't the real culprit here? Because I'm seeing similar results with my old iPhone 3G, in the same areas, simply after upgrading. Phone has decent signal sitting in desk, down to one bar or "No Service" after simply picking it straight up.

I am curious if it also has to do with how sweaty your hand is and the environment you are in. I ask those who can not reproduce this problem try wetting your hand a little and make it moist then try holding it again and bridge the little gap.

This simply has to be re-quoted.

I tested Steve's theory on my 3GS and he's was right on the money. If I cover my 3GS on the top left corner with my hand the signal bars will start to drop until the phone is searching for a signal. Of corse I don't normally hold my phone I that manner so I've never noticed that before. So, I guess he's right, don't hold it that way.

You have to admit this feels a little bit like Apple is just shoving this down our throats. Yes I know we all have a choice NOT to buy the iPhone, but still, this whole issue is like a bad dream. I would've never thought that Apple would be the company to give his customers such a kick in the nuts. Not even a "sorry for your inconvenience" or such. It IS an inconvenience when you have to constantly THINK about how to hold or NOT hold your phone/email device/media player/camera/movie editor/gaming device. It's not normal... I feel robbed.
However, the phone is doing a MUCH better job with reception (besides this anetnna issue), because in my office I used to drop calls and completely lose reception on my 3GS, but not with the i4. So I guess that's good..
yes exactly! for those of us who actually use the phone in a business enviornment, this is a nonstarter. I can't think about how I am going to hold the phone in an hour long conference call or driving down the road. they need to fix the issue so that I can just hold the phone in either hand as I would normally do.

Maybe this phone was designed for MONKEYS. Hey Steve do they hold it right?

Instructions for placing an emergency call with your iPhone 4:

- Be sure to have dry hands. Avoid being in an upset state, since that might result in your hands sweating. Stay perfectly calm.

- Avoid accidents in rain or snow. If you must get yourself into a sticky situation outdoors, make sure it's a sunny day (just not too sunny, we don't want you sweating either, remember?)

- If you have blood on your hands (your own or someone else's), do not under any circumstances touch the phone. Wait until the bleeding stops, then wipe your hands carefully before dialing 911.

- If you have a first aid kit, grab a band aid. Do not however use it on wounds, instead place the band aid on the bottom left edge of the phone.

- Swimming pool accident? Priority #1 is to quickly cover up the iPhone 4 to protect it from water. Next, look for another phone in the vicinity, preferably one with a plastic casing. Use that phone to place the emergency call.

He's also using Wifi which complicates things further because we don't know about that antenna.

I'll be the last to defend any one who is obviously full of BS, and Jobs is here. There are scattered reports of people receiving replacement units which do NOT exhibit this "flaw" so who knows. A large bad batch of China crap Jobs is trying to unload?

I'll be waiting for a while before even thinking of upgrading given the litany of issues we're seeing now.

haha thats great

Well both my 16gb and 32gb iphone 4's have this problem.
I'm waiting a week and if it's not resolved I'm returning all the phones.

Just Imagine !!!!

I like apple's products. There is a thought of perfection behind them. But just IMAGINE if this issue would have happened to one of "android devices" ??? how would you react if Motorola's CEO came out and posted the now infamous "NON-issue" respond, or ( this is even funnier ) you hold it wrong !!! wouldn't everyone just laugh at him for say so ????? Just think for a sec and put a aside your love for the company. This time their product has major issue and they seem (at least up to now) don't care about it.

Love how you put this but seriously, this it not good. What if you have an emergency and can only use your left hand? This could turn into a HUGE legal problem...

I should clarify -- Jobs is full of BS about "non issues" regarding the initial batches of iPhone 4 units. Yellow "stuff", some Gorilla glass that maybe wasn't, signal/antenna issues...

I'm a die-hard Apple guy but there's something stinky here.
