ya.... and the customers will get a free bumper and the lawyers will get rich.....

Or worse yet, a check for less than even what the Bumper costs. LOL!

Lawyers always win in these class action things, and every one else gets screwed.

Doesn't anyone in this thread use a case? I've never had a cellphone of any kind without using a case for protection (currently using a silicone 3GS case until my iPhone 4 case ships). If a case solves the problem, what's the issue?

Yeah, I don't understand why more people don't use a case on a $200 dollar phone. I've seen some pretty nasty iPhone screens. I just don't get it.

Protection aside, a product should work correctly right out of the box—especially an Apple product.

Whoever posted this earlier, it's great! I just realized that's the same way the iPhone is held in ALL of the commercials on tv.
But now all of a sudden Apple had a revelation that it's the WRONG way to hold a phone?

I'm sure sjobs@apple.com has a FULL inbox of confused people, but I encourage you to send one anyway, and also speak to customer service.

Those are all screen grabs from past commercials? For real??

Too much.

Indeed

I have a legit question: what are the odds that Apple relocates the "seams" in manufacturing soon for a revision?

Got to agree with you that it seems like you could put that lower left corner seem either down and around the corner or just at the corner (with some additional internal support) and the chance of contacting it would drop significantly. But lets see how this plays out. The fact that 3GS is having new issues in connection with the iOS4 upgrade seems to indicate that there is a software issue going on as well.

Steve Jobs is funny.

He can sell you anything and people will fall in line to become early adopters no matter what.

If this situation went out of control that sort of remark would make Apple's stock plummet.

Read my post again. Did I say those were from past commercials? I said it's the SAME way of holding the phone... Isn't it past your bed time anyway?!?

His Cancer MEds Are getting to his head.

I don't want a case.

I Bought an iPhone.

Didn't buy into the most expensive phones out there ( Bill and all ) to be showing people a big rubber band.

I hope it really is not as big of a problem as people are saying

Return it and get a refund. It is a design flaw that Apple can't change now (they can change but they would have to re-design the whole thing... and that's money and time, so it won't happen).

Unfortunately, people will keep the phone :) because it is more important showing off that piece of engineering (which doesn't work properly under certain conditions) rather than returning it ;)
That's the reason that Apple has probably said that "your're not holding the phone with the right hand", they know people are greedy for this no matter what.

LOL I imagine this being played out like an airplane safety video
Ah, right...

- Don't emergency land the plane in or near water
- Don't emergency land the plane when it's raining
- Skiing, diving and boating accidents are not allowed

Hey, anyone wanna play the FaceTime Drinking game?

One tequila shot for every time someone is holding the phone wrong in this video.

I'm only 30 seconds into the video and I'm already drunk as a skunk. Anyone who survives all 2 minutes of it gets a free stomach pumping, provided that you place the 911 call on your iPhone 4. ;)

I'm a developer and came across the iOS 4.0.1 source code. Curiously, this piece of code stuck out at me:

signal_strength = signal_strength+3;

if (signal_strength > 5)
{
signal_strength = 5;
}

:confused:

Can anyone explain what that bit of code might do?

Wow, my friends is even worse then mine -- his disconnects with two fingers in the lower left corner.

tomorrow apple will rename the iPhone 4 to the i4 since it can't be used as a phone. Problem solved!

Yea... terrible sentence.

Regardless another forum I am on we do have someone say they could not reproduce the problem but after wetting their hand the moisture made the problem occur. We are curious if humidity and moist hands could be amplifying the problem.

In hindsight I'm amused to no end by all the people who were convinced that Apple would get rid of the seams on the final product... I'd love to see their faces when Apple releases the rev. B iPhone 4 with 2-inch seams. :D

Put pressure on them. Call Apple tech support and open a case number. Call ATT and ask for a prorated refund of your monthly fees. They advertise the iPhone 4 as changing everything. They can put pressure on Apple, so put pressure on them. Don't just ask for your money back. Demand that they fix the product. They should give us what they said they were giving us! No getting away with this kind of crap.

If the phone works with a rubber 'bumper', to me that's a clear admission that they could have (should have) engineered this to work without forcing people to worry about how they hold the phone.

I have a lot of respect for Steve Jobs, but he's lost me with this one. Okay, other phones lose some signal strength when held — I've confirmed this with my 3G. But some people are completely losing an otherwise strong signal just by holding the phone in the normal fashion, because (as is clearly demonstrated in this YouTube video) there is an issue with the two antennas shorting out due to their proximity and external exposure. It saddens me to say it, but I can't see Apple escaping this one. This is an obvious and easily demonstrated design flaw.

Look, this same external antenna design was something Apple tried to sell as a new design feature — something that differentiates the iPhone 4 from other phones. But now that its weakness is apparent, Apple wants to downplay the difference and say it works just like other phones?!

Some people are saying this isn't a deal breaker. Well sorry guys, but it is for me, and I was as excited about this phone's release as the next guy. I'm now going to wait and hope that the early adopters don't put up with this from Apple, because really, Apple's response is in your hands. If enough people refuse to put up with this issue, what would probably have been the most profitable product launch in Apple's history will be a flop, and Apple will be forced to take notice. Yes, it's gonna hurt their bottom line, and as a long time Apple fan I don't like to see that, but that's something Apple is going to have to deal with for pushing out a product with such a glaring design flaw.

Yes, it's an otherwise brilliant product by all accounts, but that doesn't make it acceptable for what is, after all, still marketed as a 'phone'.

Apparently, it's only okay to hold the phone like this now if you're using WiFi, since they were using FaceTime for all of these shots. Seriously, though. All of their ads have shown people holding phones like this for the last few years. Ridiculous. I bet Steve is regretting that initial response right now.

That's it, I've had it with those fancy, shiny phones - I'll be keeping my wall plugged rotary phone :D
Hey, don't knock those... I actually did keep one of those. It's a Cobra, or "Ericofon" as it's known in the US...
