Apples silence has been deafening. I have owned Macs since '93 and loved how the 3G worked along with my other Apple products. But this is not how I want to be treated and I will be going with another device when my AT&T contract is completed. The 3G is a brick and makes a good paperweight.

how many MAJOR software updates to android phones get?

Try This

Everyone with problems should try this at least once:

1) in iTunes prefs, trash all backup files
2) connect iPod and make a clean backup
3) restore iPod or iPhone from backup (the only one that should be there is the new one with the most recent iOS 4)
4) enjoy a properly running device

I had to do this with my 2G iPod and I've never looked back. (A shame this is my very first post, and I'll admit I haven't read all of the posts, so forgive me if the aforementioned steps have been taken without the benefit of Step 4.)

HTH.

Im going to get hated for this, but why are you using a 3G just pay the $200 and get something new. As for Apple they should have just not let it work on the 3G kinda like how the 1st iPhone was locked out. Funny I still see people with the 1st iPhone, man that was the crappiest one I went through 8 of them... 3g, 3 of them.... 3gs only one, great phone.

you think steve jobs ever tried jailbreaking his phone just to see what it's all about? :D

btw do you know many Apple Store Employees have their phones jailbroken?

It can't be a coincidence that the most popular jailbroken features always end up on the non-jailbroken iPhones,(Even the ones Apple said 'Cant be done!') Apple is watching the jailbroken side very closely.

iOS 4 on iPhone 3G was the single biggest reason why I no longer use iPhone. Swiping 5 times to get out of lock screen was just too much to bear.

i dont know what your talking about. my ipod touch 2g sucks. im thinking about downgrading to 3.1.3 and using backgrounder for multitasking. the ability to multitask isnt worth this slowness.

4.0 can't multitask anyway on a 2g iPod Touch.
I had horrible performance when I first upgraded, but after performing a hard reset, it came back to life.

Very Bad iOS4 Performance

iPhone3G is almost useless running iOS4.

iPhone3Gs for some reason seems to work better and even better that my iPhone4.

iPhone4 has many nice new features, but the iOS4 is sluggish and stutters in almost all my applications. It's a little frustrating when my application screens keep freezing for a few milliseconds. I did a completely fresh install to avoid bringing any issues forward from my old iPhone.

What is strange is my iPhone 3Gs actually opens the new application folders faster that the iPhone4. It's only .1 to .2 seconds faster, but it is noticeable. I did an unscientific side-by-side performance test and my first thought was why did I get the iPhone4. The performance difference between the two devices is very narrow, at least so far.

I am patiently waiting for the 4.1 update. With millions of iPhone I suspect that few, if any, have the exact same configuration. Some issues only show up after mass testing and as one poster put it, we are all beta tested in the end.

To put things in some perspective, over the years we struggled with Microsoft updates and crashing software that for me was 100 time more prevalent with Microsoft than with Apple. I have used both platforms extensively since their inception. So, while Apple does have some issues, they do get them resolved on average many time faster than Microsoft EVER fixed any problems. I often waited a year or more before deploying Microsoft updates waiting for a somewhat stable release. I don't do that with Apple.

I'm gonna be with my 3G for a few more months and am glad to hear this. Many will complain to just upgrade their phone which is all well and good, but when you look back at how slow the 3G ran while gaining very few features suggest either laziness or an attempt at making people upgrade.

It's good that they are looking into it and am not sugessting any underhanded actions on the part of Apple. ;)

Custom SMS

I know this is wishful thinking but it would be really nice if Apple would finally get with the 21st century and add custom SMS alerts. The default ones are old and annoying if you've had every iteration of the iPhone like I have. To make matters more annoying, if you're in a crowd of people with iPhones and an alert goes off then everyone checks their phone.

How hard is it for Apple to allow this? The ONLY reason for me to jailbreak now with iOS 4 is for custom SMS.

Back to the topic at hand: My girlfriend still has a 3G and iOS 4.0.2 is painful to use. Just opening Settings sucks.

I'm sorry but its completely inexcusable. They knew how badly it performed on the 3G, and they intentionally released it anyway (they did NOT have to) hoping to push 3G users to buy the iPhone 4 (guess what? it worked for everyone I know with a 3G that was unfortunate enough to update their phone).

Now they drag it out until the complaints reach boiling point. Then they make the "fix" which won't do much, and from then on the support line will be: "upgrade your phone you troglodyte!"

If I were still a 3G user, I'd be pushing for the ability to drop back to the final version of v3.x

Frankly, after using iOS4 now, I'm totally underwhelmed with multitasking (not how Apple implemented it, just the idea in general.) I actually wish there was a way to switch it off. I now have to constantly worry that my daughter (with her limited 3G plan) will walk out of the house with Pandora or such streaming, and start racking up big overage charges.

I've always thought multi-tasking on a phone was a non-issue, and I'm more convinced than ever.

It's because blind fanboys like you that Apple can get away with this.
If iOS 4.x degrades iPhone 3G's performance to such a terrible level, maybe it shouldn't be released in the first place.

I'm not going to lie...that's pretty ridiculous. I've heard some people complaining about how slow iOS4 was on the older iphones, but I didn't know it was that bad. That video was rather eye opening haha. O well, the update will most likely make it all nice and shiny again :) Just like the graphics card update for the macs earlier this week. Makes playing SC2 soooo much more enjoyable :D

I don't know what people are complaining about. I have a 2G iPod Touch and it runs iOS4 just fine. 2G iPod isn't any faster than the 3G iPhone.

When I first put 4.0 on my 2G Touch, it was damn slow...unusable. It's gotten a little better since I disable all the Spotlight stuff and removed some apps I wasn't using and did a restore from backup. Music app still crashes. I've started closing all pages in Safari before I launch something else.

Looking forward to this update.

just restore as new, problem solved

when i bought my wife an iPhone 4 to replace her 3G we gave the old one to our son to be used as an iPod. restored as new and jailbroke it for the themes. it was a bit slow and some of the kid's apps didn't work so i restored it as new again with 4.0.2 and it works fine now. about as laggy as when it had 3.1.3.
My wife had no problem going from iPhone 1,1 to iPhone 4. She actually seems to get better reception than I do too. :(

Hated, no. Vociferously hung from a tall building by your gonads, probably. ;)

Some of us aren't into buying the latest and greatest all the time. E.g. I have a five year old 17" PPC PowerBook which is still going strong. It's not as quick as a modern day MacBook Pro, but it still does what I want it to. The only time it will be replaced, is when it dies on me.

It's the same with my 2 year old iPhone 3G. It does the job that I want it to do, e-mails, web browsing, apps, and phone calls. I won't be replacing it until it dies, or I accidentally drop it and it breaks.
