That is predictable. Need to save something for revision b.

my first thought as well.

I guess I will have to wait-I am rarely an early adopter for just this sort of reason. Seems the kinks and improvements hit by round 2 or 3.

i always like the fuji laptops that converted to a tablet-seems the best of all worlds.
I would also like GPS please-keeps the number of devices down in my car. I do about 45k miles a year in my sales job-a tablet would be an awesome tool if done well. Guess we will see soon.

Yeah, making it a 10" hand-held portable video conferencing device just by adding a simple quarter inch camera would be SO STUPID!

WHY DO PEOPLE MAKE SUCH STUPID REMARKS???:confused::confused:

This really is all about Apple's 20th century American money making scheme. Make is worse than it can be, then release upgrades one at a time and the suckers will keep buying. I'm so sick of this.

EVERY electronics product is thus. My prosumer DSLR continues to improve to the point that I must continue upgrading to keep up with Mr./Ms. Jones.

A camera in the new Apple product would aid people who provide estimates to their (NOT there) customers or who want to share images with friends. There is more to the functionality than videoconferencing. However, any camera today would be autofocus; and with face detection technology, it will be able to follow a subject who is speaking to others.

Has anyone suggested whether the new Apple product will be rigid or flexible? What happens if it is knocked off the user's lap or off a table?

If that's what Apple is going to use then yes, but I don't expect people to purchase a $1000+ non-upgradeable gadget / slate~tablet. Not even from Apple. Or it needs to have some sort of expansion slot.

And this thing screams iTunes all over... as the new hip and Apple money machine. Not just for e-books. No way!

If memory cards/modules are interchangeable as they are in myTouch and DSLRs, then this would be beneficial. Otherwise, that would be a good reason not to buy this new Apple product when it first appears.

If anyone thinks a device such as is being discussed here won't be used/useful for computing, then they should rethink their idea of what people do when they are able to connect to the internet. I can connect with myTouch  but it's not so easy with such a small screen to interact with the internet. But then, I am not using a bunch of apps, either.

Re-direct that nonsense at yourself. This device is primarily for MOBILE situations, and unless you've lived in a cave for 3 years, you're aware of the fact that its completely inconceivable for AT&T to carry such a product and support video conferencing on their network. Apple is not going to add a WiFi only feature in 2010, as they will look like 2007/iPhone.

It's simply not happening, because it can't be great. That's Apple's usual approach, and its also common sense.

Video chat is also worthless on a tablet.

If it doesn't have a camera then whats the point? Unless Apple is aiming for affordability, but that's not in Apples vocabulary technically speaking.

My guess for the islate:

- 10.1" LCD screen with multitouch
- 1gb of RAM
- dual core cortex arm 9 processor
- 32 gb ssd
- an hybrid o.s beetween mac osx and iPhone gui, closer to aniPhone than a standard macs but with full integration of iTunes, an evolved app store and a cool gui+hardware idea for text imput.
- some online storage disk could be possible for the new iLife suite (10/20gb)
- Bluetooth, wifi, no 3G, no stylus, nor USB or any port at all (no minidisplay)

599/699$ for the price

iSlate range prediction

Based on no insider knowledge whatsoever, boredom, inane speculation and wild conjecture about what people might want/need/pay for here's what Apple will announce in a couple of weeks:

iSlate £199
LCD 3"
16Gb
iPhone-like OS
WiFi
no dock
no camera
(They'll call this one the iPod Touch)

and

iSlate Pro £699
OLED 10.9" transparent to an eInk screen below for eReading
256Gb
iPhone-like UI/compatibility with full OS X "compatibility" as required
3G & WiFi
12Mp Camera with 8x optical and 12x digitasl zoom
8Mp 30FPS Webcam with "make subject beautiful" software enhancement
iWorks touch (shortly to be joined by MS Office MacTouch)
GaragebandTouch
Dock with laser keyboard and tilting iSlate holder
Matter Transporter
Bose flat ribbon speakers which sound as good as B&W 660s
Pico Projector at 5000 lumens with full 1080p res

Or not:D

I don't think I would miss the camera much – I do hope such moves would make the device fall in the right price bracket.

Stephane Richard was appointed delegate general manager of Orange in order to resolve internal social tensions which led to numerous suicides in the company in France

he is supposed to be the future CEO of the company

i guess that being an international clown won't help him in his career

dude,

don't expect ssd inside a tablet... it will be have flash memory not SSD

and the price won't be that low

no less than $999

gruber hasn't been 100% and in some cases, his night before statements read more like a listening of the most popular and logical rumors than any 'insider' knowledge. I take him with a grain of salt.

Collateral, Tom, Tablet

You know where I bet Steve got an idea for starting the slate project again...
The movie Collateral.
Tom's character had some kind of tablet computer with a stylus which he used to navigate his database of targets with...

Yes, because that's the only movie ever to have a tablet computer, and there are no tablet computers for sale by anyone else.

Every idiot and his grandmother have something to predict about the freakin tablet computer. If you dont know anything for sure, then just KEEP YOUR TRAP SHUT!

I'm not sure where you thought you were but my browser bar says "macRUMORS.com" not "macSHUTYOURTRAPUNLESSYOUHAVEFACTS.com"

Just for the sake of argument, the market is not only the US. There are actually countries in this world where video conferencing and usable mobile broadband access is more than sufficient enough. WiFi should be considered as well. Tablet would be great to carry around the house or work place while vid-chatting. IMHO.

You side-swiped a very important point. It becomes rather amusing if you follow the trajectory of speculation about Apple's slate over these past couple of weeks. The speculators seem to have no concept that allows the slate to be more than one thing.

Currently, that one thing is a cell phone of some sort. Any and all things must be done over a mobile network. Recently, the slate was a new computer. With enough gestures, the developer community will port their apps to the slate so that we can edit our photographs, videos, and write the Great American Novel on the slate. Back when the rumors first started rolling, the slate was a electronic reader. Nothing Apple could do would be better than what the Amazon Kindle already provides, but Apple fanboys would buy its slates anyway just because they have the Apple logo.

Who knows where the speculation will take us tomorrow?

details like this (along with all the ATT flack) is part of why I think all the dual GSM/CDMA in the iphone talk was about the wrong iphone os device. i think that it's the tablet. great gateway device to lure in even those that didn't want to switch to ATT.

my only hope is that it is optional. cause I live in an area with city sponsored wifi so between that, home, work etc I'm covered for getting online. without paying another $25-40 a month to anyone

i have to disagree. I haven't seen anything in the last couple of weeks or anytime that anyone with half a brain has said the slate would be one thing. it has been from day one a multifunctional device. just like the iphone and the ipod touch.

the whole ereader thing is just one of those functions and because it comes with several other 'devices' it will most likely beat the Kindle in terms of hardware. Content is where this game will likely be determined

Say WHAT?

This is ALL about speculation/wish lists.

Don't worry that's why this site is called rumors it's 99.9% not accurate in the topics people love to thnk they know but the only people who have the power is that cRappy site called engadget and employees

This might be a bit whimsical on my part, but I would lime to see a webcam on the ipad.

I have never wanted or used a camera on my iPhone. But a web cam could be useful.

However I find that what I know of the ipad it is a device in search of a purpose.
