I agree and I think the iSlate will make it worse. My wife already spends more time on the iPhone at restaurants and before and after sex than she does "eating".

Waiter? Table for one, please.

PDAs should be like cigarettes - you have to leave the table and go outside to the "penalty box" to use them.

The Japanese got this right-- their technology etiquette is so much better than I've seen anywhere else...

If the iSlate contributes to population control it will be more "green" than any checklist or preceeding product.

Someone just said something about population control. No one says anything about population control. People don't care about population control. And, shouldn't we get back to the subject of "hats?"

mystery can be good

Yes, "etiquette" is what we're losing.

When you're at dinner with friends, and someone says "when X happened in 1998 or 1999, did Y..." and the Iphone geeks start tapping and several conversation topics later they look up and say "it was 10 March 1999, and Y..." you just feel sorry for them - they went into their "bubble" and are no longer part of the group conversation. Why did they come to dinner if they're going to focus on their PDAs?

"X" and "Y" were minor things that were briefly mentioned and left behind. No need to look them up and file a report during dinner. People don't choose to have dinner with online encyclopedias.

:)) about a recent dinner with friends at a cafe in San Francisco that was in an AT&T dead zone - the Iphones were useless for web browsing during dinner. It made for a more pleasant evening.)

Scary stuff...

watch there be no tablet

Apple: "We had this excellent product nearly ready for release, but the buzz rose to such a level that the bar was raised to where our product could only be seen as a massive disappointment. So you can all blame it on yourselves. We got nothing, sorry."

I wouldn't be surprised by this.

*whoooooosh!*

Whoa. That's the sound of the joke flying right about a few miles over you head.

is it really an ideal situation to have a videoconference where you have to hold the device in front of you?

umm... yes? what else am i supposed to do with it? i'm sure it'll have some sort of stand / prop device anyway.

i'm not real crazy about watching a 2 hour movie while holding the device either. makes as much sense as a video conference.

For taking photos (or video) with a tablet, you would be hand holding a fairly large device which would exacerbate camera shake.

actually, a larger/heavier camera is inherently more stable. so that would actually HELP the camera shake. until your noodle arms get tired, anyway. zing!

they put that little camera on EVERYTHING. why not the tablet?

that said, sometimes steve is a real jackhole about this stuff. rigid bastard.

They wouldn't have released the iPhone then.
or they can do what they did to the iPhone and only release it in the US just to break peoples sprites.

Doesn't everyone expect the slate to be a huge disappointment?

It can't possibly live up to the hype, no matter how good it is.

Actually no. The folks who judge it on the "hardware specs" will accurately say it is crippled and sucks, but will miss the entire point.

The folks who see and enjoy and revel in the new I/O and GUI paradigm, will get it to a large degree, but will not catch the "magic".

The folks who use it and experience it changing their lifestyles will be the "thing". They will be golden. For them this slate thingy will be SICK.

It's hard to really understand just how cool an iPhone is if you read a spec sheet, judge it based on reception and data plans. You have to do stuff with it and realize, hey, "I could never do this before, and I can do it ANYWHERE".

Apple really is about lifestyle.

Rocketman

Agreed. The iPhone couldn't live up to the hype, either, but it largely did (admittedly not for a couple of revs, but the potential was obvious from day 1). I've bought five of them, so I have high hopes for this tablet beastie.

The new scoop is this is actually going to have a built in Polaroid camera and spit out the snapshots and have them develop within a minute or two.

Those of you commenting on the impact of technology on human interaction and the human experience are dead on.

I am starting to feel like the main reason people do anything is to tweet about it or update their facebook status or text someone.

I was out to dinner last Friday night and I was amazed looking around at how many people were at a table with others and had their heads buried in their phones.

somethin' doesn't click...

... no camera in the tablet? Wasn't it just a couple of days ago that we got pretty reliable verification of a camera?! I don't know why Apple would include a camera in almost every product they make, except this one. Looking at the camera on the top of my MacBook Pro screen now and thinking it's going to look a lot like that.
