The camera that Ive designed involved 947 prototype parts and 561 models. 55 Apple engineers assisted in the process, spending a collective 2,149 hours. Final assembly of the finished camera took 50 hours and more than six days.

maybe that's why the rMBP's are still not updated :p

What's the big deal? Maybe in person it looks better, but from the pictures it looks like cheap plastic, and the design is too basic and too minimalistic...

I dunno whats the big hoopla... I guess cuz mr. higher than god Jony Ive designed it, so it must be great...

I still don't think it looks too great, especially compared to other Leicas. But hey, that could just be me.

agreed.. Leica have always made well designed and aesthetically pleasing cameras.. this just looks like it was borrowed design from the Mac pro.. so i find it a bit surprising how much man power and hours it took for Ive to come up with this.

I know people will get sick of hearing this, but the more I use iOS7, the more convinced I am of its truth: this would have never gotten past Steve Jobs. He had taste.

Are we talking about the same Steve Jobs that approved lickable Aqua GUI and translucent plastic Macs?

Or are we talking about the Steve Jobs who put the leather-stichting on iCal and the green felt on Game Center?

Saying Steve Jobs wouldn't have done it is, almost without exception, an empty statement because Jobs did so many things that contradicted his earlier statements and actions. The only thing constant about him was that he was willing to change his mind all the time.

Thank you for that. This case makes it obvious that he's prefering form over function.<snip>

So what we have here is the iMac of photography. It's less usable but slick.
(I'd like to see if he changed the menus and the other UI components to plain text as well ;-))

Quoted for MFN' truth.

Ive is so much into flat and uniformous that he just gets carried away. Form over function is the worst mantra from a design POV in my eyes.

But this camera is the perfect example why there is only one-of-a-kind. Who should be the buying target? Hipster-wannabe-photographers with no real clue?

Those guys who don't need to use a shutter time wheel because their magical HDR software composes the output to one uniformous color scheme?

From a professional point of view this camera is just a plain useless fashion statement and defies the name of Leica.

You've Got to be Kidding

Ive is definitely a good designer but he isn't perfect - and without Steve Jobs around to kick his butt on a daily basis, he's strayed from the things that have made Apple the remarkable success that it has become in the last 10+ years. Case-in-point: iOS 7. What a visual disaster that POS is. Obsession with Perfection? I think not.

Don't forget about the hockey puck mouse.

Confused, what sensors are you referring to? Maybe I missed the 5s sensor bashing article as mine seems to work perfectly.

I'd agree with you if it wasn't for charity. Throwing him to the media for a couple interviews to make people aware of the auction is not a big deal IMO. They have a chance to raise millions for charity which is all that matters at the end of the day.

Very true, and fair play to him for getting involved. His name & that interview are probably worth as much as his actual design contribution.

Fixed it for you. :)

Except your just contradicted yourself, so you fixed nothing. If Ive is right about skeuomorphism (and he's wrong), he wouldn't need a new OS because he just designed the least skeuomorphic OS the world has ever seen. So thanks for playing, please try again!

Wow!

Methinks that Ive is starting to believe the legend of Ive, which is never a good thing.

He is obviously a good designer, but really...?

I understand your comment but I think what he is saying is actually accurate. Most of us (not all, most) look at things, admire them and move on. We dont really think about much beyond that. That minimal level of attention works for us. What he describes as neurotic is this notion of observing the same things we all do but then taking things a step further.
Its not arrogant, just factual.

I think you completely missed the point of this exercise.

I believe Ive has a unique style, something that manages to be industrial, minimalist, but soft and full of emotion at the same time. It's a perfect example of post modern design (some could say with influences from the neo-romantic movement).

By the way, isn't the particular shade of gray used quite beautiful?

What a disgraceful use of company resources. Spending all this shareholder time and money on a personal ego project smells like violation of fiduciary duty when what the company really needs is a better product portfolio. Its fair to say now that everyone has "heard" of Apple.

This is the ugliest camera I've ever seen since the digital age. Ive really needs to go. It's 100% his fault that Apple kicked out Forstall and Ive's pathetic attempt at a new OS design was an unmitigated disaster. He couldn't be more wrong about skeuomorphism if he tried. Apple really needs to bring back Forstall to clean up Ive's mess or good.

Here is the best part - since there is only one camera, you can whine all you want but you dont have to buy it. Simple really.
Oh and stop being such a drama queen.

THis camera is obviously made to be kept in a display case and never used because just look at it, they removes the dial controls from the top of the camera. It is rather usless as a camera, it is just a point and shoot. But no one would use this thing anyway. It was designed for collectors.

If you look back into history, lots of geniuses in our world were jack asses. They thought they were above everyone else. And very often, they were right.

As a Leica fan for many years, I think Ive's camera design is woeful. Leica are amazing at designing cameras -- (as distinct from the re-badged Panasonics, which really don't count as Leica designs).

I guess now we know why the rMBP and Mac Pro haven't made it out. Ivy and his team have spent a few thousand hours on this camera.

Oh well, good training I suppose.

Not my cup of tea because I'd rather have a touch of the romanticism of days gone by showing up on my camera. But obviously that is just an opinion and a preference.

So the hardware engineers couldn't be working on Macs? And if the MBPs are just spec bumps what involvement would Ive have anyway?
