The hostility towards Ive is weird. Even MacRumors itself engages in it by using that intentionally awful photo of him. How insulting and unnecessary.
Oh please. MR and other sites have used the "black t-shirt Jony" photo/s hundreds if not thousands of times. It's not some disrespect. The man has aged a little, not a big deal.

For people wondering what a pin you wear that is AI powered might function (without a screen) like:

Probably something like this:
Disappearing computer

Right, but again, what does this bring to me that my current cadre of devices all paired together does not?

I have a phone in my pocket with impressive camera and microphone arrays, and more available compute and machine learning resources than anyone knows what to do with at the moment.

A watch on my wrist with its own display/interface and microphone array, and earbuds in my ears feeding me more output and their own array of mics.

All of this tightly integrated and tied together is capable of doing just about everything that pin can when you think about it.

The play by OpenAI, Rabbit and all the others pushing an AI centered device is pretty transparent: they want to be Apple and control access to new software features by forcing a hardware upgrade cycle on users. In theory it prints money, but the marketplace for AI is already full of competitors and none of them unique enough to attract users
that would be dedicated/loyal to an ecosystem like Apple does.

Jury is still out on what the general public’s sentiment on AI really is too. The news cycle is dominated by people that are either not knowledgeable, or knowledgeable but with a heavy bias.

Obviously I disagree. Ive is a well known public figure. Posting that kind of picture of him is clearly intentional.

I think we will need to see once the initial batch of the Rabbit R1 devices reach regular folks hands and how useful they are in day to day use be it by itself or in conjunction with your smartphone since this sounds like it would be similar to that. The demo of the Rabbit R1 done by their CEO is very unrealistic for me to use day to day in place of my phone so I can't imagine this will be a whole lot different from that.

Hmm… instantly made me think of this:

”I think we will need to see once the initial batch of the Apple Vision Pro devices reach regular folks hands and how useful they are in day to day use be it by itself or in conjunction with your smartphone since this sounds like it would be similar to that.
The demo of the Apple Vision Pro done at their keynote is very unrealistic for me to use day to day in place of my phone so I can't imagine this will be a whole lot different from that.”

Is this a Joke? April Fools late joke
The Apple Ring was a better candidate for an April Fools imho, and a good laugh too.
If this rumor of a rumor is no total joke, it's most likely Sam Altman buying Ive's name to help fundraising. If I remember right, the infamous Nikola truck scam (the one running downhill) started with prestigious patrons such as the late Henry Kissinger or Gates family members.

I'm sure it will too thin for my use-case. Also I will not buy anything with the charging connector on the bottom and unusable when charging.

Jony Ive designs revolutionary products at Apple that establish Apple in the mainstream.

Jony Ive leaves Apple.

Apple design products that are progressively worse.

Apple struggles to maintain innovative edge among increasing competition.

Jony Ive starts a new tech company that will become more Apple than Apple.
No absolutely not. Let me correct that for you. Jony Ive and Steve Jobs design revolutionary products at Apple that establish Apple in the mainstream.

After Steve dies, then with no limit to the Ive power, Apple products become pretty but unusable.

I don't believe he ever changed his name. Jony is a common nick name for Jonathan. And, I'd argue going by Jonathan would be more pretentious, not less.
I’ve not seen Jony as a nickname for Jonathan and nothing wrong or pretentious using the name Jonathan? But it’s whatever he wants it to be.

That Ives photo doesn't remind me of 'confused old man' so much as it does Colin Farrell's character in The Gentlemen

Close, but to me it's Tom Cruise in Tropic Thunder.

Its usually the case that there are multiple people behind new ideas, inventions and innovations. Sure Ive had ideas… but in these times the vast majority of things are team efforts.
no don't break the delusional myth of one individual genius doing everything........

Jony is a masculine given name or nickname (often of Jonathan) [note: the majority of people who go by the first name Jony listed on that page are using it as a nickname for Jonathan]

I just don't see how using a shortened name is pretentious. Using a long full name is, however, arguably pretentious. It is like going by William instead of Will, or Joshua instead of Josh. Shortened names are less formal and more casual, so are therefore less pretentious.

I wonder if Ive's greatest work is forever behind him, now that he doesn't have Steve Jobs to keep him focused. I guess we'll find out. I wonder if the new AI device will be made of alumineeum, or whether it will be unapologetically plastic.

Steve Jobs passed away in 2011.

Jon Ive first introduced the butterfly keyboard on the 12-inch MacBook in 2015.

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman and former Apple design chief Jony Ive have officially teamed up to design an AI-powered personal device and are seeking funding, reports The Information.

jony-ive-ipad-pro.jpeg

Little is known about the AI device at this time, but it won't look like a smartphone. Altman is a major investor in the Humane AI pin, a wearable AI device that does not have a screen, so it's possible he will create a similar product with Ive.

News of a possible partnership between Ive and Altman first surfaced last fall, but talks were in the early stages and nothing was official then. Ive and Altman's unnamed startup is now sourcing funds from major venture capitalists, with Ive aiming to raise up to $1 billion in funding.

OpenAI could own a piece of the business, and the duo has also been in talks with SoftBank CEO Masayoshi Son. Potential investors include Thrive Capital, an OpenAI investor, and Emerson Collective, a venture capital firm and philanthropic organization founded by Laurene Powell Jobs.

Ive left his role as Apple design chief in 2019, and while he still worked with the Cupertino company as a consultant for several years after through his firm LoveFrom, Ive and Apple stopped working together entirely in 2022.

Anyone ever notice that Jony Ive looks a little like a younger version of Phil Collins? If he's from the UK, that probably explains it... 🤣

I am unsure how can someone's full name be deemed pretentious? It's their name.

If someone insists on using a name that is typically shortened I think that is more pretentious than shortening it. I don't really think it is pretentious, but if you imagine a scale: Billy, Willy, Bill, Will, Liam, William, Sir William it goes from less pretentious to more.

I was really only saying it in response to the frankly ridiculous notion that going by a shortened nickname is pretentious. If Sir Jonathan Paul Ive was pretentious, he would use the name I just used in this sentence. He would not use "Jony Ive."

As described above, and also, since he’s been knighted insisting on calling him Sir Jony Ive would also be pretty pretentious. Guys like Lewis Hamilton and Paul McCartney are also knighted. Neither one of them insists that people call them Sir. Because they’re not especially pretentious. How you use your name and your honorarium title should you have one is what makes it pretentious or not pretentious.

Ive needed Steve as an editor and Steve needed Ive for inspiration. Jobs always had an affinity for designers and had developed relationships with several very high profile individuals in the field.
