I can see that. For me personally, I quit my last job because I didn't like my new manager.
This is something I fear lol. Luckily I haven’t had a manager yet that I disliked so badly that it made me want to quit. Did you try to switch teams or switch to a new manager?

I’m very curious what we’ll see from Ives new company.

Is this kind of poaching legal? I thought that as part of leaving a company there are restrictions on contacting/ poaching former colleagues.
Those restrictions usually run for about 6mo after a person leaves so I think they'd be ok

Wan worked on app icons, buttons, and home screens as part of Apple's human interface team, which Wilson was also a part of. Wilson helped design the iCloud icon and the Apple Watch user interface.

So Wan Si and Chris Wilson are two people who are responsible for removing the beautiful and functional skeuomorphic design elements and replacing them with hideous and confusing flat design elements.

Therefore, as for Wan and Wilson not being at Apple anymore, good riddance.

@ThomasJL Blindly attacking individual employees by name is uncalled for. You have no idea who they are and what they accomplished. Stop!

Did he take the person who design the Apple TV trackpad remote? Because I really want him to take that person.

Jony Ive has designed some of the most beautiful devices in his time... he's also designed some really crap ones as well... the hockey puck mouse, the magic (un-ergonomic, can't charge it and use it at the same time) mouse, the trashcan Mac Pro, the butterfly keyboard, the smooth Apple (I'm slippy to grip and I'll roll off anything) Pencil 1, monitors that you can tilt but not adjust the height, and the touchbar.

Honestly IMO - let them go. He had some great collaborations with Steve back in the day, but lately when given free reign his design choices have not been good. Make everything thin as a cracker, and to hell with battery life or other functionality! Make the most heavily used part of the remote control OUT OF GLASS! Ick. Apple's recent stuff has been much better without him.

I completely agree and honestly wish he had left sooner
So you would prefer a big, fat, thick huge bordered iPad with lots of buttons and weird corners? I think sir Ive has done wonders in the designs and even though there are days that I wouldn’t mind a 100% extra battery capacity, on 99 out of a 100 days that is totally unnecessary. So for that one day I have a big ass powerbank that can charge my iPad 2-3 times if needed. Cheaper, more flexible in use, and in daily use the iPad is much better for it.
Look at panasonics thougbook range, they even have dual hot-swappable batteries, so you can haul around as manny batteries as you like!

Some really valid points! Except the trashcan, I liked that design a lot.
and I don’t think he designed the butterfly keyboard. Man I hate that keyboard.
but he has done some serious designing and developing theories and design rules for these devices. And some other areas as wel.

A person’s full-time job was designing app icons?? I mean, I get that it takes time, but they only need to update Apple’s own icons, some don’t get updated for many years, and they’re probably created and tweaked by an entire team!! 😬

I would suggest there is a whole team to blame and not just Ive.

I accept the mouse is stupid in regards charging, however Ive did not :

engineer the keyboards
Engineer the Mac pro trash cans
Engineer cooling in the MBP etc

what I am saying is he may have been pushing an aesthetic but it’s not all him at all. There is a subtle hint above in who else is responsible.

but in the end of the day, Tim Cook is responsible for everything coming out of Apple.

Some minor duff products do not diminish the influence Ive has had on modern technology. If you are unable to see this then that is due to your inability to understand design.

I have no idea why people laud Ive as a great "designer".

Design is every bit as much about how something works as how it looks.
Most things he's had a hand in designing interact with and function with humans -- horribly.

All he really does is make everything smooth, feature less, minimalist, etc -- to a fault.
That's not great "design".

He'd really excel at just designing concept cars and/or other products never meant to actually make it to market, but rather just "look cool".

@orbital~debris

Please don't just "downvote" (god I hate that function on this website)

Please tell the forum what you disagree with in my comment that you "disliked"

What products that Ive has been a part of "function great"?

I don't mean "look great" or "super cool" -- I mean actually work really well as a result of the design?
Is it up to another to disprove your negative? “I have no idea…”etc

If that’s the case pick apart the products he designed and criticize them instead of making a blanket statement and having someone else disprove that statement.

Apple is a client of Loveform and with Ive's team now moving over to join him, is Apple moving away from inhouse design to that of using 3rd party design companies. Cutting down on design & employee costs maybe?
In house is near always cheaper than external so don't think this is the why behind the change.

Wow wow wow as SJ would say.

good riddance to the best product designer of the modern age and let’s replace him with………

LMAO HAHAHAHA

best designer? iOS 7 showed how bad a designer he is. for him clarity is just a white background with a blue label text.

Their names are mentioned in the original post of this thread. The original post also mentioned who they are and what they accomplished.

I bet you buy from designer companies thinking it actually means you understand design, but in fact haven’t got a clue.

There are a tonne of crap designs in the world, including from Apple, as I have previously acknowledged. But to pick on some super minor element, as an example of why he isn’t the most influential and best designer since Dieter Rams [who is a major inlfuence] says a lot.

Name 3 others who are better and more influential please [in product design], and also provide reasons why Ives work is in multiple museums around the globe.
