Apple is working overtime to gain the hard won acceptance of well healed buyers.

It's like putting lipstick on a pig, if you're familiar with that refrain. No matter how they glam it up, it's still a digital device that begins expiring, and becoming obsolete before you remove it from the box.

The old money, new money, thug life, big players just don't care.

They've sold hundreds of millions of iPhones in the last year. They continue to be a leader in PC sales, and the leader in tablet sales. So I guess there is more than 1% who can afford exclusive?
"Can afford" and "buys" can be mutually exclusive, given how many posts and threads there are about payment plans for a new iPhone.

Maybe I am not reading things correctly. Do the prices include the watch or are they just for the band? And can you just buy the band if you already own a watch?

Not sure how taking a niche product and creating even smaller niches is going to work out, but maybe they are doing better with the Watch than I think they are.

Apple design chief Jony Ive and Hermès artistic director Pierre-Alexis Dumas recently spoke with The Wall Street Journal about how the Apple Watch Hermès came to be.

Interestingly, the two companies began collaborating on the premium Apple Watch last year, several months before the wrist-worn device was released.Jony Ive believes that, while the Apple Watch Hermès was the most expensive product introduced at Apple's media event earlier this week, the premium watch does not make Apple an "exclusive" company. He later compared the Apple Watch Hermès to the Apple Watch Sport, stating that the same amount of time and effort went into designing both models.Nevertheless, Apple's partnership with luxury goods maker Hermès is further evidence the Apple Watch is being positioned to both the high-end technology and fashion industries. The returns could be lucrative, with the Apple Watch Hermès lineup ranging in price from $1,100 to $1,500.

Apple Watch Hermès watches feature leather straps handmade in France, with ten different models to choose from in Single Tour, Double Tour and Cuff designs. The collection will be available for purchase in October at select Apple Store and Hermès locations in Los Angeles, Miami, New York, San Francisco and Toronto.

why would anyone spend more than $50 on a watch band. I'm sure there's plenty of knockoffs. it's made of leather, not solid gold...

Interesting how the $350 "sport" watch is used as an argument that Apple isn't exclusive.

Ditto, I wasn't a huge fan of the Apple Watch but with those straps I'd love one. For me, it's a bit much to spend on a watch whose tech (and probably style) is going to be outdated in a few short years. It's quite a bit different from buying a watch that's old-fashioned to begin with.

I totally understand. I have a 2008 iMac that is totally running out of steam. I also have a 1000-year old (replica) abacus, which does some of the same things and is running as well as ever.

I like the fact, Apple Watch is available for any taste, flavour and price point (even for people, who want something extravagant), but it definitely doesn't deliver a second class product in any of these price regions. Neither in terms of specs, nor in terms of quality.
Simply clever.

I'm wondering if they are using the diagnostic port to connect to the band for verification. Only with that expensive band do you get the watch face enabled. At least that's what I'm thinking. It would make sense, that way Rolex, Omega, and all those other high end watches can create faces that require you to buy an overpriced band. The the watch face is only enabled if you have a legitimate band.

That would be an Apple Thing so solve it that way. Very smart!

I've been hearing rumors that the whole thing is a fling and that Apple is just experimenting.

That would actually make sense because this whole High Class tech thing is horrible marketing IMO. Consumer tech is not like a fine Swiss watch. These are disposable toys for adults, but to charge thousands of dollars for designer tech that does literally the exact same thing as the "sport" version is absurd, especially if it's not something you can leave to someone else as an heirloom.

Er, that's why it's called Watch Hermés collection. It's still an Apple watch just with Hermés bands and branding.

Yes exactly this is absolutely no different than what Huawei and others are doing with their marketing efforts. Apple is trying to pass off this authorized knock-off as a digital Hermes Cape Cod. To the casual customer shopping in a Hermes boutique, they might not realize the difference, or that Apple is even involved.

Apple has really lowered their standards here by putting the brand of a partner on their product, to the exclusion of their own. This is absolutely no different than etching an ATT logo on the back of an iPhone alongside the Apple logo, and replacing the white startup screen Apple logo with the ATT logo. This was a huge milestone in the industry when Apple prevented ATT, then Verizon et al from putting their logos on the phone. But now, just like Huawei, Samsung and the rest, Apple is marketing their watch to luxury watch wearers with pseudo-skuemorphic designs that mimic luxury mechanical watch faces, but made all the worse because Apple allows the partner's trademarks exclusive visibility on the watch, suggesting something seemingly-dishonset to the customer -- that this watch was designed and manufactured by Hermes in Paris.

Chicago isn't exactly on the level of a New York

"We're not exclusive" ... He insists, as he eases into his Bentley that is now parked in Steve's old disabled spot.

I disagree. I think they look great and would be a reason for me to buy the Apple Watch. I just wish it wasn't $1500. Can't any other third party manufacturers make something that looks/feels similarly great?

Check Aliexpress in a couple of weeks.

Not a fair analogy at all. In the case of the phone carriers, they were attempting to assert their dominance over Apple as provider. No Apple iPhone owner would delight in showing off an At&t or Verizon logo. That's not true with Hermēs, quite the contrary.

In the case of Hermēs, they're an invited partner, and their brand has élan and panache. People are willing to pay a premium for these products. Your dishonesty argument doesn't wash either, it's not being done behind the backs of Hermēs, it's with their willing participation and endorsement. And yes, this watch with the unique band and watch face was indeed designed and this watch was interpreted by Hermēs. I don't think any of the customers are going to be under the impression Hermēs designed the watch internals.
