It's called test marketing. Chicago simply didn't make the short list.
More likely it's because Chicago isn't a center of fashion like NYC, LA, or Miami, but I'd think that the Hermes Apple Watch would be more popular than the Edition, which is sold all over the place, including 2 Chicago stores.

I disagree. I think they look great and would be a reason for me to buy the Apple Watch. I just wish it wasn't $1500. Can't any other third party manufacturers make something that looks/feels similarly great?
Go to Apple.com and price out the stainless with link bracelet. $1500 is not that much more. If you don't value the Hermes brand that much, then it's not for you. Simple.

Love this new plan - great marketing and it nice to see Apple keeping the SS line as a more high end jewelry timepiece while the Sport is more accessible. And it definitely helps differentiate the apple watch from the lower priced android watches on the market. Looking forward to lots more collaborations in the future!
I share you sentiments.

AT&T had zero input into the design of the original iPhone. Why would Steve Jobs (or anyone else) agree to AT&T their glomming their logo over the iPhone?
And what exactly did Hermes design on the Watch? Again ... NOTHING. A watch band does not a watch make, especially when it's no different from any other band Hermes designs for their other watches. Apple adapted a classic Hermes watch face, with permission, and likely approvals. Neither of those things make a significant contribution to the Watch itself. Plastering a Trademark on a digital watch face does not a Hermes watch make, no more than an ATT logo on an iPhone would indicate any contribution by the phone carrier.

He is right. That $1K Hermés watch is exactly the same as my $349 sport watch except for the band and branding. In some ways this could be Apple's most egalitarian product as the functionality is the same where the you spend $349 or thousands.

Not quite, its the $550+ Watch not Sport isn't it, with Sapphire glass and stainless steal - and there is already an Apple Watch at £1000.

Mind you, you Americans get it so cheap, the 42mm Sport is only £220! We have to pay $620 for the 42mm Sport!!

I'm wondering if they are using the diagnostic port to connect to the band for verification. Only with that expensive band do you get the watch face enabled. At least that's what I'm thinking. It would make sense, that way Rolex, Omega, and all those other high end watches can create faces that require you to buy an overpriced band. The the watch face is only enabled if you have a legitimate band.

That port has a cover on it. I don't think they are using it for anything.

It's covered now. The Gen 2 watch could easily implement something like that. But I don't think they would even need to use it, just a chip embedded in the watch band that authorizes it when connected, and unlocks the watch face, using the NFC built-into the watch.

This Hermes thing is just the beginning of these kinds of luxury fashion partnerships for Apple, and depending on how successful they are, I can only imagine they will want to take steps to keep them exclusive, which is likely bad news for people hoping for a custom watch face-kit app.

So is Faber-Castell "exclusive" because they partner with Porsche on a few pens?

Not exclusive at all

That is, by far, the stupidest thing I've ever heard him say. The whole point of the Apple watch is to be a ridiculously expensive fashion statement where people routinely spend hundreds of dollars on WATCH BANDS. For goodness' sake. $20,000 for a solid gold watch, but noooo, we're not trying to be exclusive. But the fanboi lap it up.

It amazes me how dismissive the Apple Watch Hermès has become.

I own a SS, and I'm parting with it to get the Hermès. I wonder about the demographics of those of you who are negative on this watch. For me, this will be the cheapest watch I've ever purchased. In my social circle watches are very important and most of my friends are in the under $10K market with models from Rolex, Panerai, Omega, etc. These watches are sold primarily because of the movement (what's inside the case), and they tend to hold value over the time. Some of my friends also purchase vintage timepieces at auction in similar price ranges, and they run as well now as they did decades ago.

I wonder how many of you wear a watch on a daily basis, or if you're among the group that abandoned watches and simply checked your phone to see what time it is. If you're in that class you'll never under the Apple Watch Hermès.

Watches are not about telling time. They are jewelry. They are fashion. They are luxury. If you simply want to know what time it is you can pick up a $10 plastic watch and get similar results from a Patek Phillipe.

I see this Hermès move accomplishing two things. One, this is a brand that targets female clientele, and while boys love their gadgets most of the women I've met have not been too taken by the AWS or SS. However, the women I've spoken to have gotten very excited about the AWH. We don't have a breakdown on the amount of men vs. women who have purchased the Apple Watch, but I wonder if it might not be a majority of men who have bought it.

Second, despite everything Jony Ive has said they absolutely have to go the luxury route. Most people who wear watches do so as a fashion statement, and truth be told there's nothing fashionable about a colored sport band. The existing leather bands Apple had were terrible, exhibited no signs of hand crafting - which is probably why they just redesigned the classic buckle. The Hermès bands are handcrafted in France and pulled from established, dare I say iconic, bands that they have marketed for decades.

Apple needed to make a bold move here, and they did just that.

And if you're in front of me on line in Miami on 10/5 - then I will shove you to the ground and ensure that I get my Apple Watch Hermès.

Real jewelry rarely has a shelf life of 1 year. Even if jewelry is faddish and gets outdated eventually, it doesn't run out of battery life, or suddenly no longer be upgraded to the latest Operating System.

But it's also instructive to know that folks like yourself think so little of human life that "shoving people to the ground" is so important to get something that will eventually be disposable.

Fortunately, I don't think anyone will be ahead of you (or behind you) in line to purchase this, so have fun while it lasts.

I was going to agree with you, then you used the word fanboi. Fanboi, fandroid, sheeple. These are words that tell me someone is a troll and not worth a bucket of warm spit.

Well, I can't understand how to convince people how to spend so much money in something like this.

Oh well, tastes are tastes.

I think in this case, the term luxury doesn't apply. When one buys a brand new BMW over a Ford there is a distinct difference in build, materials, and features.

Adding a watch face and a strap doesn't represent the luxury leap in the same way. People can call it what they want, but I'm not really seeing how it's anymore luxury than an Apple Watch Sport with say, a leather loop, and getting it done for a 3rd of the cost.

When you can afford luxury you don't care about how long it lasts.

I pay rent at a luxury apartment community. For half that price I could be making a mortgage payment and at the end of 20-30 years own a house with serious equity. But I am literally throwing away more than the cost of the Apple Watch Hermès on rent each month, and at the end of the year lease I will literally have nothing to show for the money.

I know people who lease luxury cars, and after a year they turn the car in, and lease another. Never do they actually own a car, or have the ability to sell it. There's constant turnover.

I know people who spend hundreds on dresses - wear them once - then never wear them again!

You simply don't understand the world of luxury. I spent hundreds on a pair of suede shoes that I've worn exactly three times.

So if you think people won't buy a $1100-$1500 watch because it might not turn on in a year - that's the most incredibly naive thing I've heard about a luxury item.

"Fanboi" and "lap it up" means I can't take you seriously. I don't think you own, or ever owned, anything Apple ever.

Being an owner of several Ulysse Nardin and A. Lange & Sohne watches, nothing about the Hermes watch screams luxury to me.

I don't think anyone who knows even the slightest bit about watches would consider a Hermès watch to be luxury. It is mostly sold to women to compliment their more expensive bags, which are perhaps the definition of luxury. Is is more accessory than watch.

However, the Apple Watch Hermès is a luxury item, when compared to the AWS and SS variants. Similar to how Godiva is a luxury chocolate when compared to a Hershey bar.

Really? Then why do Patek Philippe watches still sell for hundreds of thousands of dollars?

Yes, really. Most people don't care and for all they know, that PP watch is a $50 knock off from Chinatown. Most watches look the same and it doesn't cost much to make watches that look expensive.

It's not any different than a woman carrying around a $20,000 handbag. Most people wouldn't know or care.

Why do they still sell if that's the case? No one ever said humans were logical. :p

Mac SE/30, Powerbook 100, Newton(!), iPod, iPod Touch, iPhone 4, iPhone 5, iPad 2, iPad Air, MacBook (white), MacBook Pro Retina, AppleTV, MacMini. I think that's it. Stuff yourself. I bought Apple products because they were good, but if you need to queue up for your showy watchband, go ahead.

There's a reason many Apple fans are called names.
