1. It won't have Face ID.
2. It won't have multiple cameras.
3. It will have a short and fat aspect ratio.

In no way will it be a Pro iPhone. It does not compare. It will be a worse iPhone than a Pro or Pro Max. You're supposed to be OK with that, for the privilege of unfolding it into the worst iPad.
A) Many, many folks already choose to buy "worse iPhone than a Pro or Pro Max."
B) Same with the tablet function. My guess is that there are many buyers who will consider a small folding tablet to be a useful device, not a "worst iPad."

We will see.

Apple has gone downhill the last 2 yrs. From software issues to iphones being too expensive. I predict they will go out of business by 2030. No one is gonna buy a phone or flip phone for $1,999.
Everything is possible. One possibility is that they gradually turn into just another electronics manufacturer, pushing out the same gimmicky, “change for the sake of change” products like Samsung and the rest. The only difference will be the Apple logo on the side. At that point, the company’s valuation will likely decline. I think iPhone Flop is an example of this has already started. iPhone Flop might be like Nokia E90 compared to traditional Nokia phones. Mean while Apple released iPhone and it was over for lack-of-vision E90. What will be the next “iPhone” remains to be seen. Maybe something from OpenAi. I heard Jony and Sam are working on something.

This is not opinion. This is based entirely on the reliable leaks that we have seen. If you want to pretend that those are not accurate, go ahead.
IMO the point is that first we need to have a real device in hand so we can see how such a thing feels and handles:
• How does it fit/feel in my pocket?
• How well does it work doing existing phone tasks?
• How badly is camera competence compromised?
• Is a mini tablet view useful or just a kludge? Etc.

Until then we all are just speculating with our opinions.

Do you think people who deliberate choose "an iPhone worse than Pro" are going to spend $2,000 on an iPhone?? Do you have any idea the single reason why they are buying "worse than Pro"?

Is there any logical thought going on here at all, or is just non-stop mental gymnastics to try to justify this thing?

Yes indeed "non-stop mental gymnastics,' but just chatting. IMO the concept is easily justified - - but only the real device and its pricing will advise whether or not buying is justified. IMO a lot of iPhone Pro buyers do so for the camera, so that cohort of high end iPhone buyers [which includes me] may be pushed out of the ffablet market cohort if the camera is not competent enough.

Your point about "Do you think people who deliberate choose "an iPhone worse than Pro" are going to spend $2,000 on an iPhone??" is a very good one that has not really been discussed. No doubt Apple is considering it as they decide what the ffablet price points will be.

Waiting to see the foldable. $1999 for the base variant will most likely be the price, matching the Z Fold. No doubt it will improve over the years. But based on the rumors, the 1st gen seems like a bit of disappointment for me. It looks like it will have a smaller screen, lack a telephoto lens and also lose FaceID. Looking forward to all the rumors in the coming months.

Apple is definitely behind. Samsung will even be releasing a Tri-Fold this year. People will actually be walking around with a thin phone that has three screens. Impressive as hell!

All Apple has to do, is make a foldable with IP68, full glass front and it's over. The best part is. If it costs $2,500 [which it will] it will sell by the millions.

One look at Vision Pro indicates Apple is not doing anything of the sort. This Apple is content to just sell a million or two foldable phones and call it a day.

Well, with the foldable smartphone market estimated at circle the drain with around 1.6% of the market, and Apple finally releasing their own "foldable" smartphone, we are finally going to learn if people actually want this thing or if the traditionally wrong the and Wall Street analysts live up their always wrong reputations. But hey, I honestly hope they sell great and people love them. I am skeptical, but may even be convinced to purchase one if they are good. Regardless, who cares what I think.

Nice! $2K! I expected Apple to charge more than that but I'll take it.

And for you people worried about the durability of foldables, specifically the Fold7, go to around the 8:00 mark. These devices are getting better and more durable by the year.
As someone who's never paid attention to the foldable market or even seen one in person, I thought this video was very informative. The excellent lighting and camera show the textures and detail so well that I feel like I already know what the device would feel like in my hands.

The durability of this particular product is shockingly impressive, but I'm pretty confident that I could never get used to the film-covered inner screen.

As a lot of people just say that this is a common reply, but I feel the same way.

I’ve been an Apple user for over 20 years, saved up for a Macbook Pro back tven, loved it and used it for over 10 years. Switched it for a pc because I game a lot. But my phones and tablets have always been iPhones/iPads though. Albeit the phones were SE’s, just cause my personal use of a phone doesn’t justify the pricetag of a higher end. But I did buy a 16 last year, simply because marketing at Apple knows what they are doing. My previous SE’s charging port was failing so I “had” to buy a new phone. This has been the biggest misbuy of my life. I expected so much greater photo’s, but when I need a picture urgently, it’s almost always out of focus. You can not accept nor expect this from the publical image the iPhone has.

My girlfriend switched from iPhone to a Samsung Galaxy recently. Her pictures look tons better. And I never did this, but I even put a colleague of Apple just because something feels terribly off the last months.

This has nothing to do with the subject of the thread I know, it’s just that this time around there might be some truth in OP’s post.

Sounds like user error. Do you have a stupid case or camera lens protector attached ?

The people who argue that 2k is more than than the cost of a iphone pro + a ipad pro; don't realise that they're not the target market for this device.

Apple, likely will have limited manufacturing capacity for these; and it's likely going to not be a mass market product; so they can choose to price it up the wazoo and there will be enough people out there that would buy it without blinking even if it was a $5000 device.

E.g. the huawei mate xt costs around 3k, is exclusive to china; yet has already sold ~400,000 units
https://www.gsmarena.com/huawei_all..._trifold_mate_xt_units_already-news-67343.php

For a long time, the pro max was the best selling in the range; simply because a lot of people have the "i'll buy the best one" mentality, even if it is excessive to their needs. A lot of those people will just go for the fold when it comes out because they have FU money, and those that don't have FU money are going to have to cope with the fact that they can't afford to have the best iphone anymore.

Yeah, I’d argue that if spending $2k upfront on a phone every year in any way affects the rest of your life, you are not the target audience. That should be the case for phones in general but for some reason people spend more than they should on normal phones.

It is like an iPad mini unfolded. But you seem to keep ignoring that.

An even better iPad Mini since it will have a 120 Hz OLED screen instead of the garbage Apple put in the Mini.

I love foldable devices, but the rumored size is just too small for my liking. The Pixel 9 Pro Fold is about the smallest I’d go, and it has a 6.3 inch cover display.
It won't be small, it will be 5.5 but wide so will have plenty of useable space

Only thing worse will be cameras

Touch ID on side will be far more convenient in day to day usage certainly on a table

The fold will be a better phone than the regular iPhone pro. Better multitasking, better usability and everything will be a better experience because you are seeing more and doing more

I agree, I’ve realised that for portrait usage it isn’t the height that makes me like the Pro Max more than the Pro it is the extra width that makes more text (or other content) fit per row. I actually think it is unnecessarily tall for that type of usage.

So the shorter and wider aspect ratio rumoured for the foldable would be great for phone usage while it enables the folded out display to be iPad Mini sized which is great for video as well.

Agreed I think it will be great. I really enjoyed it on pixel fold
