My avatar would suggest that I am a very fat guy with a mustache.

Reality checks are in order. This is what I actually look like:

Oh I'm not my avatar either, its a concept art piece for a game I'm working on :)
Unless I did have some kind of ruby encrusted helmet do-whacky. Which I sadly don't :(

I think it just makes it easier to find a user's posts when looking through them on a page. Otherwise I don't really care what it is.

Exactly. I use it for nothing else.

(oh, and I don't have one myself –*double standards, right?)

I totally do. Not as a totally intentional thing either. You see something next to someones name repeatedly and it begins to factor into what you think of them. It always weirds me out after someone changes their avatar after a long time with another one. Also, if someone adopts another persons avatar I have a hard time distinguising, even if the first person used the avatar months ago.

One of the more esoteric threads hereabouts.

I try not to change avatars. I've had like 2 different ones since coming on MR... maybe. At least 2 that I've kept for a long time. Been thinking about changing this one but I always decide against it.

For some reason people keep thinking I'm really an angry person when I use this tar.

While everyone would like to say that they don't pass judgment on posters based on the posters' avatars, I think that's a bit idealistic. It's like saying you don't judge someone you've just met based on their appearance, clothing and body language.

Realistically I'm sure we all build some preconceptions on peoples' avatars, usernames, locations and signatures, especially if we're not familiar with their posts. At the very least there are certain personality traits and judgments that I'm sure a majority of us would pass on someone with, for example....an American flag avatar, an anime avatar, a figure from pop culture, a figure from history, etc.

hey guys, just got my first avatar! lol

No i usually don't judge by avatar, but it is good identification. I know when i see people like fivepoints avatar, that the thread is about to get messy;)

mmmh, then why do you disguise yourself as a rat?

You try finding an angry mouse!!

There are none. ;)

But I will go with one I have used elsewhere, that is undeniably a mouse.

EDIT: Done, but you'll have to stay tuned.
"Changes to your avatar may take up to 2 hours to appear on certain forum pages."

I only judge people by their writing. Of course, having avatars turned off might have something to do with that. ;) (Never really cared much for the idea, honestly.)

I try not to change mine all that often, I think I have finally made (well, photoshopped more-so) one that I am truly satisfied with. Granted, I have used a few in the past: a white Apple on a black background, the Olympic Rings, a Classic Apple logo with the MR gray color for a background so it blends in, and now the Genius logo with the gray background to blend in, so far I like this one the best and I have a feeling that I will be keeping it for a while.

And I rarely will make a huge judgement on somebody at all, probably only a judgement on somebody who is overtly rude or somebody who grossly offends me, but I rarely judge regular people, yet alone on the basis of their avatar. If I were to make any judgement whatsoever, it would be on what they say. Avatars for me make it easier to identify who a person is, rather than trying to remember them only by their username.

That's exactly what I meant.

The example I gave you: this guy wrote these stupid posts and his avatar was Ralph Wiggum picking his nose. If his avatar was Bart Simpson, for example, I might find that he was being funny in his posts and just joking, instead of stupid. I don't do that intentionally.

Do you see what I mean?

I recently realized my avatar could be interpreted that I am military-related in some way. It's way too late to change it, but I assure you I am not.
