is anyone going to jump ship and get the unlimited Verizon before it ends ?

I might, i noticed that it says unlimited data for 4g and 3g so this is a plus. Im not sure if thats the same with ATT.

It's certainly cheaper, but just the thought of being able to use 5GB ... or even 10GB for $30 right now makes everything seems so expensive.

Well yeah, I got an unlimited plan myself ;).

I really hope AT&T lets me keep grandfathering it (I suspect once iphone goes 4G though they'll insist you have to buy a 4G plan which, surprise, surprise, there is no unlimited one).

Even so, if I had to go to a limited data plan, for my needs, *if those prices are true*, I'd pick AT&T easily. I can live with under 2GB of data and AT&T is slightly cheaper for the 2 GB of data (and also slightly cheaper if I want tethering on top of those 2 GB cause it would cost me 45 for the total of 4 GB plus being able to use 2 of those to tether with where as Verizon for the same amount of GB is 50 dollars).

I still wonder if that rumor is accurate as i really don't think it sounds competitive (from what I understand, most consumers use under 2 GB <- keep in mind a lot of people on this forum are not most consumers). And those prices are more expensive if you don't use much data (and AT&T has a cheap offering if you don't use a lot of data or want to be on wifi a lot where as those prices don't even have an even close to equivalent plan).

Now, if you do the math those prices are advantageous if you want 5 GB or more (if you consider AT&T charges you 10 dollars per extra GB). But how many consumers are those (probably not enough even if you consider some people will be "trapped" with Verizon as AT& won't have good coverage in their area)?

So I have my doubts that those prices are what we'll see. And if they are, I have my doubts that Verizon hires people competent at marketing.

2GB is the minimum? That's pretty bad. I have to say that I like AT&T's data plan better, and not just because I'm currently with them.

Well I think it boils down to one technicality:

Verizon (and AT&T for that matter) offers both a 3G unlimited plan and an LTE unlimited plan. If they want to, and I feel like they might, they could pull a quick one and say, "Whoa now kiddies. You're technically changing your plan entirely. Switching to LTE plans is very complicated. We'll have to go tiered for you."

Complicated as in dropdown menus.

I fully expect this to happen.

2GB – $30/month
5GB – $50/month
10GB – $80/month

If you would like to add tethering on to any of those packages, you can purchase 2GB of data at an additional cost of $20 per month.

Wow Verizon, that is a ****ing slap in the face to the American people. Economy is bad an you don't even offer a smaller $15-20 plan like Att does?

I had actually thought of buying a verizon palm pixi for $50 off of newegg and locking in unlimited data while still keeping my upgrade for the iPhone 5 in September, but if this is the type of company verizon wants to be then that's not the type of company I want to be a part of.

Personally I wouldn't even trust verizon to grandfather unlimited data when someone upgrading in two years the way Att does unless it's in writing on their press release (which it won't be).

If that's also a family data plan, it will save me a bunch of money per month.

It's not.

I've been both an AT&T and Verizon customer for years, since I love smartphones and like to have choices. The major difference I have personally experienced between these two companies is that Verizon always seems to charge more per phone annually, for voice, sms and data than it's competitors.

They attract customers by offering promotions like the recent unlimited deal, however I judge based on my annual out of pocket expense per phone, not what some short term promotion costs.

Currently I have three active lines with each company and hands down Verizon costs more.

Speaking of grandfathering, does anyone know if Verizon will grandfather existing customers' unlimited data?

Apparently some are claiming the Verizon reps are telling them once they go to renew their contracts in the future or upgrade the unlimited will not be available. Obviously not yet confirmed and remains to be seen...

I bet Verizon fanboys who defended their carrier to death and touted they were never going tiered are hiding under the rocks.

However, in all seriousness, AT&T already did this my dear lord of the bunnies.

I just got my wife an iPhone 4 a few weeks ago. There was nothing discussed about any tiered plans as expensive as Verizons. $15 for 200 MB and $25 for 2 GB. That was my point.

Why aren’t you in the WW game?

Oh! You mean how expensive they are! Oh, I am sure they won't. AT&T has the upper hand in ads touting their cheaper offerings and better 3G speeds.

I am not in it because I am doing an internship that is taking very much of my time. That leaves too little time to dedicate to the WW game.

I don't think anyone could really state a position that VZW was never going to go tiered pricing for data. Even before the iphone arrived Verizon stated that tiered pricing was the future.

The question is whether they'll grandfather current customers in or not.

I’m only worried they are going to take away our grandfathering. The ones who cite the crazy usages of 10 GB’s a month will be the cause if it gets to that.

Come on. 2 posts a day is all you’ll need. Just act like mscriv or Melrose.:)

<snip> ...

Please clarify...

In other words, we signed up an iPhone yesterday w/Verizon (a new account, single line) and all there was to choose from is (to quote from their literature, in store plans, and Apple Store verbiage) --

Data Packages: "Unlimited Email & Web for Smartphones (personal email)" @ $29.99 / mo.

And this package does not vary according to which phone is chosen (a "4G/LTE" phone, iPhone, etc.)

Is there some fine print I'm missing?

Thanks.

^^THIS^^

We've known for months that Verizon was going to do this. IIRC they announced it long ago...before AT&T even did. I don't recall a single poster saying that Verizon wouldn't be tiered or that they would be cheaper than AT&T.

They will grandfather, they always do. Now what is possible is that they tell you if you want a 4G phone on LTE you have to switch to a "4G" data plan.

I think he's saying that by July 7th they could easily split it up and offer 2 plans. I'm guessing this would not affect current 3G or 4G users already on an unlimited plan. All the carriers have always allowed you to stay on your current plan (aka grandfathered) but find creative ways to get you to switch eventually.

I swear to God if verizon pulls some **** where they have like 2GBs and 150MB's It'll just suck...AT&T's 250MB plan is small enough...Eh I'll cross my fingers!

EDIT: Another thing, I noticed verizon seams to be advertising unlimited data allot more just in the last week or so. I saw at two verizon stores employee's putting up signs that said "Unlimited data only 29.99 a month!!". Interesting..

Interesting, I see what you're saying (ala splitting up current "all-in-one" plans for 3G & 4G/LTE options.)

And you're spot on: carriers are masters at finding creative ways to get the consumer to cough up more cash for their ever growing monopolistic empire(s).

I just (really) hope the VZW unlimited data plan is allowed to be passed on (grandfathered) to a new contract w/a 4G enabled (someday) iPhone device. I mean slap me silly, but it would just look bad in the eyes of the consumer if the unlimited plan offerings were a bait and switch tactic.

Though whether you could consider a contract of 2 years in length to be "bait and switch" is debatable, I realize.

But what of this scenario: Say Verizon (for all intents and purposes, they are) quits the unlimited data option on July 7th.

Then one week later you walk in to a VZW store and upgrade your iPhone to a 4G/LTE device. Of course they're going to let you keep the unlimited option on the upgraded device (albeit you're probably signing a new contract from that date going forward), yes?

We just aren't sure how long this "grandfather'ing" is going to be extended, I suppose.

Argh. Headache setting in. Must. Stop. Speculating. :p

I think Verizon probably just has side investments in companies that produce:
1) Vasoline
2) Headache pills
3) Slimmer wallets
;)
