I think everyone is thinking too much into this. It's going to be the same upgrade as the 13".

Broadwell (Maybe, definitely not Skylake)
Force touch
Faster SSD
Upgraded GPU

It's going to be the tock of rMBP refreshes equal to what Broadwell brings. Next year with Skylake I can certainly see a whole new design.

Finally some sense. And the only reason the 15'' weren't updated at the Spring Forward event is that there was no new Intel chip ready for them. Hopefully this refresh means there is.

I think they should just do very subtle refinements and upgrades for the next 2 gens. >1.5mm travel butterfly keys? sure. Trackpad? sure. Enhanced screen lamination with stronger scratch-resistant antireflective nano-coat? PLEASE.

Why would it be getting butterfly keys? The 12" Macbook only has them because its too thin to accommodate full travel keys. Neither the 13" or 15" Macbook Pro's need them on this design.

I think that the redesigned MacBook Pro family will be similar to the Macbook Air now in terms of design and ports. I'm not sure how they're going to do it exactly, but they're going to figure out a way to stuff all of the stuff in the rMBP into a MBA frame.

I think that's part of the reason why they didn't refresh the MBA and why there haven't been any rumors of such. It's going to be discontinued and replaced with rMBP in a smaller form factor.

Well, they'll continue to sell it until the rMB is price competitive.

This. Seems obvious this is what Apple will do. MBA will be around until the rMB can fill the $899 price slot.

writing on the wall...

being what it is... but is it even remotely possible Tim Cook will pull a rabbit out of the hat on the new updated 15" Macbook Pro?

Some have pointed to the official Intel release information and other less than official rumor reports saying the clear path is for the 15" to go the way of the 13" updates earlier this year with Broadwell.

Is it possible Apple has enough pull with Intel to push the motor ahead and kickoff with Skylake chips as they are transitioning their line?

Not attempting to say this will be one helleva surprise Apple pulls off; just wondering if it's possible?

When was the last big Apple surprise and could Intel be in line with doing so here?

DDR4? Imagine what apple will charge for that considering how crazy their DDR3 prices are...:(

Yeah... I just hope that they make it a small price increase to encourage customers. Anyway, I'll be getting max RAM to future proof (pls 32GB!). Also hoping for more base storage so the higher their model comes with a 1TB SSD.

Are we going to get a refresh? Meaning possibly a new design? Or just a spec bump?

I'm hoping for new design because my Early 2013 rMBP is dated (or I just want a new mac :) )

Nah, you just want a new mac :)

Now, my 2008 Unibody is indeed dated, and yes, I too want a new mac, now!!:D (Apple, please skip the Broadwell tic and give us a Skylake Toc!)

I'd be more interested if the price hadn't recently gone up CAD$500 due to the falling dollar. I know it isn't in their control, but it's still hard to swallow paying an extra $500 than I would have had to a few months ago.

It's a little harder to justify CAD$2500 for it now. :(

Height constraints aren't the only reason to use butterfly keys and Apple admits this when describing it for the macbook:

"a more stable, responsive key that takes up less vertical space. This innovative design improves stability, uniformity, and control".

For instance, WayTools new portable Textblade keyboards use a different kind of butterfly mechanisms detailed here. They can be any height and more key travel (1.4–2 mm) is typical for the rMBP and the apple wireless keyboard compared to the space saving Macbook (1.1 mm). I personally like the 1.6mm of the 2010 MBA.

I need a true enthusiast laptop, and Apple doesn't make one.

I want a 17" screen. CPU should be some sort of i7 with 8 or 10 cores. With that many cores in a mobile chip, I'm hoping there would be no room for foolish Intel "on board" graphics. Step off, Intel, just step off!

Needless to say, I require a discrete graphic card, maybe something like a mobile Nvidia GTX 690 (yeah, I know it hasn't been invented yet; I'm just sayin'...). Memory should be no less than 32 GB, and internal SSD should be available up to 4 TB. Hey, if I have to hook up any external disk that doesn't say "backup disk" in a sticker that I made, then this really isn't a laptop, is it?

THIS would be an apple laptop that I would order. And I would name it Banshee. Or Dingodog. I should be able to name it anything I want, since this laptop would probably cost in excess of $6,000, right?

Anyway, get off your lazy butts Apple. Give us who will spend the money a real 17" laptop solution, or a 19" in a 17" form-facter (no bezel). Stop with this anemic onboard graphic game, and puh-lease with the weakling 512 GB SSD options; These are non-enthusiast machines you're making and honestly you're just wasting my time.

It has nothing to do with laziness, Apple intentionally does not want your business, it doesn't make them any money. You are a very very small % of the public and they've stopped tailoring for that tiny pro market 3-5 years ago and it is working out for them. Same reason Mac was never considered the proper gaming platform.

They are not coming back to the Pro market, they're going for the mass market and everyone is paying for the battery life/thinness focus.

If you want a powerful laptop, go for HP's Z workstations or build your own DTR laptop.

Yup. Possibly higher SSD and RAM options.

Maybe butterfly key switches, but probably taller than the rMB's.

Yes.

I don't know why everyone comes up with Skylake-H, given that Broadwell-H isn't even out. It'd be enough of a surprise for MacBook Pros to be the first machines featuring Broadwell-H.

Anyway, I'll be getting max RAM to future proof (pls 32GB!). Also hoping for more base storage so the higher their model comes with a 1TB SSD.

Yeah, the CPU has supported 32 GB for a few generations now (since Ivy Bridge, apparently; i.e. since the mid-2012 MBP), and Apple doesn't offer it as an option yet. Maybe this time.

Don't you dare!

If they update the keyboard and supersize those left | right arrow keys I'm going to smash a chicken wing into a cubical 'aight!?

I played around with the "butterfly" keys, I LOVE THEM, they are very quiet, they could be even quieter, I love how shallow they are, they would be AWESOME for the MBP because it would eliminate key smudges on the screen when left shut for a long time, pressed up against things in your bag etc etc for good !

hhaa... i dare if i wish :)

u sound like johny ivy...

You know your talking about 'keys' on a keyboard...

But isn't this just a question of the number of RAM slots for which there is some size limitations in a mobile device?

Yeah, you're probably correct on this — Apple uses 16 chips, so they'd need each to offer 2 GB, a density that doesn't appear to be available yet.

Yes, Apple's words are just jargon to push the redesign for the Macbook. The force touch track pad is actually better - hence the Macbook Pro's getting them, the butterfly keys are not, hence they are not getting them - its just a way for Apple to show how clever their design has been to make the keys fit in such a thin body.

2015 15" Macbook Pro will NOT be getting them, save this post, I bet my left leg on them.

----------

Unless, it to, is going super thin too;)

The 2015 one won't be. When any rMBP 13/15 redesign does take place, its only going to be able to flatten the bottom panel (which does bow out quite thick as they'll never be able to go thinner than the sides currently are due to the ports

My thinking on this is that the 15 inch will simply be brought up to the 13 inch in terms of the newer CPU (Broadwell) and Force Touch. I hope they include a decent upgrade for those who upgrade to a dedicated GPU (it's a bit ancient right now).
Don't think we'll see a major redesign till next year anyway.
Hopefully that major redesign doesn't put thinness as priority number one ( I'm looking at you, Mr. Ive).

rMBP badly needs redesign. is looking clunky and outdated.
:apple:

They look almost identical to the original unibodies, just thinner.

truth. Seems like some people are just blind to reality.

>Implying apple wont reduce the number of ports on the rMBP

I'm confident the number of ports on the rMBP will be the same as the MBA. Apple is going to fit the rMBP into the MBA frame or at least borrow heavily from the MBA design.

Apple will abandon USB-3 and replace it with USB-C and replace TB 2.0 with TB 3.0. These both save vertical room and if placed far back enough will allow a wedge shape like the MBA.

They might even abandon Magesafe. Or, better yet, create a Mafesafe to USB-C charger.

Edit: I think Apple is going to start making accessories rather than cater to make the redesigned rMBP to be 'everything to everyone'. It will be a money grabbing, but why wouldn't Apple do that? They'll make adapters to cater to each crowd. Need camera centric adapter? Buy the 'Pro Camera USB-C Adapter'! It'll be brilliant from a marketing pespective since Apple can just say 'Redesigned rMBP: Use it how you want!'

Oh FFS I hope not. Its called the Macbook Pro for a reason. Why does it need to be a smidgen thinner? Its getting very appearance over functionality here. The point of a laptop is to not be lugging around adaptors and connectors and the like. A MagSafe less Macbook Pro is also a poor compromise.

The Pro market does make them money. Plenty of Pros buy Macs. That is why Apple should continue offering choice. Make the Macbook Air and Macbook the thin ones and leave the Pro as a Pro machine.

Auto updated 15mbpr?

I just pulled the trigger on a 2,5ghz 15 mbpr, 512gb ssd, 16gb ram and got delivery date set to between the 10th-16th of June. I guess i will get the updated version released on WWDC. What do you guys think?
