In the world electronics, nothing is future proof. Apple does it's best to allow people to update iOS on their phone for two years, but I would say after that you might have to sacrifice certain apps and abstain from iOS updates.

Short of it, two years is a good estimate and then time to upgrade again.

It will not be future proof on T-Mobile as it does not support Band 12, which will be a big part of the push for rural and in-building coverage in 2015.

Apple marketing helps the users make up their minds. ;) it's the best in the business!!

It probably comes down to the next model having a new feature that people must have.

Though you nailed it, apple fans tend to be vain, and must have the latest version, and they connivence themselves.

Might I ask what your ever so enlightened self is doing on a site full of vain, brainwashed idiots?

Not much more than the 5s! The specs are almost IDENTICAL!!!!!

5s: 1.3 GHz CPU, 1 gig of RAM

6: 1.4 GHz CPU, 1 gig of RAM

I realize what you are saying here, but the A8 isn't about speed as the A7 was and is plenty fast enough. The A8 is to help optimize performance and battery life. IMO the iPhone 6 does quite well in both of those categories

Don't worry Apple products last longer than other brands.

You will have your iphone with the latest version for many years.

well if you trade it in today youll get the highest trade in.

as others said 2 years for sure maybe with iOs 9 it may seem tired

Dev restrictions on RAM usage will still apply regardless of a newer model having more RAM or not. So until the 6 no longer gets iOS updates (iOS 12) it will still run new 3rd party apps and games.

The only thing you might notice is apps not staying in a suspended state as long compared to a newer iPhone with more RAM.

I wouldn't worry about it.

I ended up buying the 6 64GB but I'm still concerned about RAM. I know it isn't a problem right now but do you guys think the phone will run smoothly on IOS 9 or even 10 when they come out?

I'm worried the 6S will have added RAM so the next versions of IOS will be designed for that and not run well on the 6.

Smartphones are never future proof.

I have a 13 year old Chevy express work van. Might not be the latest and greatest with the bigger tires and shinier engine but , It takes me from point A to point B . And thats all i want from it.

I don't get why people think that Apple "brainwashes" consumers into thinking their iPhones they got last year are suddenly outdated when they come out with a newer model. Yes, they do put a lot of emphasis on what's new, but that's a given. But they continue to offer firmware updates for older phones so that they can get many of the same features. The buyers are the ones who trick themselves into thinking that they absolutely have to get a new phone every year.

Actually, everyone is free to buy whatever they like if they have disposable income. Some people earn more than enough money for their lives and they love to get the latest and greatest tech (not necessarily for showing off). ;)

An iPhone usually receives updates for 3-4 years.
Original iPhone: 2007-2010
iPhone 3G: 2008-2010
iPhone 3GS: 2009-2013
iPhone 4: 2010-2014
iPhone 4S: 2011-2015 (?)

So at least iPhone 6/6+ will get updates until 2018, and probably longer if smartphone tech or speed don't advance as fast as the first few years.

I don't have anything against people getting a new phone every year. What I do have a problem with is people who get a new phone every year and say it's because Apple forced them to.

wait...how you know this processor? they didn't state specifically about processor other than "a8." i think i might have missed this spec...

As I like to point out to people who worry about getting by with a 2 or 3 year old phone, at this time last year I was using a 3Gs and getting by just fine. I know plenty of people who are still using the 4 or 4s.

I believe it is in the iFixit teardown :) I found out from a youtube video of a Geekbench test.

I was very surprised when I found out it was only 1.4 GHz! Its pretty much the same as the 5s

oh wow...thx! i'm glad you mentioned.

2 years for awesome optimization and state of the art technology, while you could plausibly get 4-5 years out of it with lesser expectations. I still see some iPhone 4's out in the wild and they appear to function correctly given that they aren't using it for games or many high-CPU use apps.
