I always wondered why people who are upset with an update go out and switch platforms completely.

This was me.

Long story short:

Essentially - Good discount on the competitor ($1600 for 1TB XPS15 with 16GB ram), Plus influx of people wanting to buy the prior version.

In the past, it was: Macs are still much nicer, and I'll stay with them.

But now its: This hardware is pretty nice! And the components are user replaceable, there is manufacturer support for Linux, and Windows 10 doesn't have the issues I remember. Also, the proposed updates look nice.

So you had to order one right now? I mean, your current (presumably Mac) was not good enough to go another month or two or anything?

I always wondered why people who are upset with an update go out and switch platforms completely. To me it sounds like just rash actions based on spite. Cause I somehow doubt that everyone waiting for the announcement had a computer on its last legs that would absolutely die tomorrow and they needed to order something TODAY so they had to go with a PC instead.

Nope. As we can see from some of the other posters, as soon as Apple announces a new MacBook you have to either buy it or buy a competitors. You can't wait and see how things go, continue enjoying your perfectly good existing laptop for a while longer, hold off until the holidays for sale prices on other platforms, or heaven forbid the next update which might fix the issues you're upset about.

Apple Announcements force you to act NOW.

On the contrary. I still use my 2009 17" MBP everyday. It is going strong and shows no signs of giving up the ghost. I use Windows and Mac platforms on a daily basis in commerce as well as personally. I also love my ipads. That being said, I see no reason to pay Apple $4500 for a 15" inch laptop that I don't want. If they made a 17" with the specs I desire then I will gladly pay even more $$$.

Contrary to popular opinion how the heck does op (or troll) not have enough for christmas presents but a $4,000 maxed out computer. Makes little sense except to troll all of you guys.

Kids christmas presents aren't more than $500 max. They'll open up the toys then forget about it weeks later.

He's playing you guys.

For 4 1/2 years I have been using a Retina Macbook Pro... it has served me well.

But after 4 1/2 years I was ready for something new.

Just curious, what was wrong with your retina macbook?

I think if people saw the landfills that these laptops end up in, they would double think their purchases. There is a phenomenal documentary on this somewhere on the internet. Just because you don't see it here, doesn't mean it's not happening. We are filling 3rd world countries with our junk.

Agree completely. We are lucky to pay so little. We should be paying the true cost of these gadgets which would include the environmental impact in the countries they are produced and for the workers to earn a living wage.

Actually nothing which is another reason why I canceled. It's balancing wants vs needs, I wanted it but dont need it.

For the person who asked about my kids, one is 22 and in UCONN and the other is 13. The $22 year olds wants a gaming machine which can do VR.

As far as what do I do, well I report on television technology. travel to plases like CED and report from the events including video reports and do a lot of video editing as well as doing audio editing for my reports which air on radio stations around the country.

I am not a plant just giving my honest opinion on why I canceled.

For 4 1/2 years I have been using a Retina Macbook Pro... it has served me well.

But after 4 1/2 years I was ready for something new. After the big event I immediately ordered a brand new 15 Inch Macbook Pro with the fastest CPU and video card, and a 1 TB drive and Applecare.

The total for it with tax was almost $4,000.00.

When I told my wife how much I spent she almost killed me... but she said if I wanted it, it was ok and that I deserve a laptop.

Over the past few days I noticed she was putting together a list for the kids for Christmas and noticed the list was much smaller this year and I asked her why and she told me that my laptop order took most of the holiday money put away. That made me sad.

So I have been sitting here at my desk with my 4 1/2 year old Macbook pro and realizing that besides the larger hard drive it can do everything that the new one can do that I need it to. It has lasted me 4 1/2 years and is still working fine... so I am going to keep what I have. And with two clicks I canceled my Macbook Pro order from Apple.

I am sad because I like new technology but I am happy because my wife does not have to worry about the holidays anymore. I can always get one later after the holidays.

You are a good dad!!!

When I first viewed the title of this thread, I was expecting a negative post. It is quite surprising to see someone making the responsible choice. You are a better man than I.

Man, I won't receive it until the 10th of December but I feel like I'm gonna go your way... and I didn't even pay for it.
This thing looks more ridiculous at each presentation / review.
Might hit the mark with contrarians though.
God I know a person who is defending Apple s choice of not including the power extension cord. Like, WTF really.

I enjoy seeing posts like this it shows responsibility and being unselfish. I have contemplated buying a new MacBook to replace my 2013 Air, but I just can't seem to pull the trigger due to the price. I'm considering migrating back to a windows machine, but I'm not in a hurry; the iPad Pro is my day to day machine and I've been very happy with it.

That's the cheap one. The model I was building cost $4500. For only a tiny 15 inch screen...I said no way Jose. For the same $$$ I ordered a Surface Studio.

I wish I could order a Surface Studio here in Oz...... really tempted to cancel my MBP order and get the new surface book too. MS are doing a top job.

Edit - OP is a good parent though. I am not which is why I am spending a fortune on hardware :) Just joking, I am buying through my business and earns them money to put food on the table. At least that is how I justify it.

Honestly the OP looks like a troll, the scrnario looks hand crafted to appeal to the hater echo chamber here.

- why spend $4k on the top end professional laptop line if it isn't the or a main component to how you make money? It's a business expense is it not?

- why go for the extra spendy options if they weren't absolutely necessary? This sounds especially ridiculous when it turns out your 4.5 year old computer will apparently still do everything you need.

- I find it highly unlikely your wife didn't actually kill you for spending a crazy amount of money on yourself for something you didn't have a budget for, especially right before xmas :p

- I wish I was one of ops kids, who apparently just got a $4k Christmas present bonus surplus.
