I'm still so confused by all the praise OP is getting.

OP is a father and responsible for 2 children and a wife. He wants a MBP despite having a functioning MBP. I'm sure he is totally aware of his finances for the family. Christmas is coming up. Despite this he puts in an order for a MBP despite having one putting his family under financial pressure to the extent she has to downgrade christmas presents etc.

He realises it and decided to post thread and cancel order.

Surely any responsible adult with that much responsibility wouldn't even entertain the purchase of a luxurious product if money is tight and he has a wife and 2 children. They should automatically come first, not a piece of new 'technology'.

For 4 1/2 years I have been using a Retina Macbook Pro... it has served me well.

But after 4 1/2 years I was ready for something new. After the big event I immediately ordered a brand new 15 Inch Macbook Pro with the fastest CPU and video card, and a 1 TB drive and Applecare.

The total for it with tax was almost $4,000.00.

When I told my wife how much I spent she almost killed me... but she said if I wanted it, it was ok and that I deserve a laptop.

Over the past few days I noticed she was putting together a list for the kids for Christmas and noticed the list was much smaller this year and I asked her why and she told me that my laptop order took most of the holiday money put away. That made me sad.

So I have been sitting here at my desk with my 4 1/2 year old Macbook pro and realizing that besides the larger hard drive it can do everything that the new one can do that I need it to. It has lasted me 4 1/2 years and is still working fine... so I am going to keep what I have. And with two clicks I canceled my Macbook Pro order from Apple.

I am sad because I like new technology but I am happy because my wife does not have to worry about the holidays anymore. I can always get one later after the holidays.

So you're going make your family endure an inferior machine, with limited futureproofing? What did apple and your family do to make you hate them like this?

I an age of instant gratification and narcissism, acts of responsibility should be lauded....

^ This. OP has been brainwashed into buying the new shiny thing when a 1500 $ ThinkPad will last him 5 times more than any macbook.

What a BS story. The OP should know the financial situation and his responsibility for his family.
Writing here about the lack of Christmas presents and his choice to not buy new hardware was just a cute way to criticize Apple.
I myself know that I should not throw that much money around even though I have no kids.
Fact is, these products can only be bought if you know how to earn that money back.
I have never spend money and then cut back on my lifestyle.
I always save or try to earn more before buying these shiny products, because you simply feel bad after the first few weeks of purchase.
My TV is from 2012 and I like the 4k OLED models for example. But I would never buy one of these shiny TV's and then have to cut back my monthly expenses.
Or even worse max out your credit card.
The original post maked me wonder if this was meant to be serious.

Nobody with a 4.5 year old PC could say the same

I'm with you here.

The title is attention grabbing but it just boils down to being responsible for finances, which everyone should be. OP can't afford the new MacBook Pros (welcome to the club, there's a lot of us in it) so he shouldn't buy one. That's all there is to it.

I don't get the praise either. It's not about being responsible. He is gonna blow the money on a VR machine. He can afford the mac it says it right in the post. It would just mean a 22 year goes without a $2000 VR gaming machine which if he's still in school he probably doesn't need either. The OP even said it came down to a want not a need so decided on something else.

Most important that your family comes first. Being considerate is always a good way to go. Good choice.

Unfortunately this OP is known for drama stories in order to get free stuff. This is another publicity stunt.

Oh geez, that's just humblebragging. First off the way you specced the thing is ridiculous. Most of those upgrades are near useless. CPU upgrades are the most useless thing imaginable and won't impact whether this round lasts 4 years or 5 years or whatever else. The drive can be worth it depending on how much you need it. Apart from that if it happens to just sit at your desk, you could derive a similar level of value from a 21" imac.

Aside from that, you're an adult. You know your financial situation. Making your wife point it out indirectly is extraordinarily silly.

No need to dump you old hardware in the rubbish; there are many charities that will gladly accept old notebooks etc. My hardware I either gift to family & friends, or pass to a children's charity via friend. I currently have a ThinkPad T430u which will be going that way. Even if you remove the hard drive for security reasons, the machine can be cheaply and easily repurposed for several years to come, serving those with lesser or greater needs as the case may be.

Q-6

That might vary somewhat, as some parts are more likely to fail than others. Poorer districts and nations certainly take on old hardware, but it only works when they can keep it working at minimal cost. In many cases I'm not sure how they do it. These things have become less repairable over time.

I'm glad I read this tonight. I didn't spend $4000! but close to $2000, which is a big amount for me to spend on a laptop. I have a 2013 MacBook Air. I honestly do just internet browsing, email, and some light photo editing. This MacBook Air is 4 years old, but its done a good job so far and it's still working fine. I decided to return my MacBook Pro 2016. I feel like I should spend that money on something more necessary.

I don't believe in today's "Christmas." That's what birthdays are for... Gifts. I believe in being home for family, visiting extended family, and enjoying holiday festivities. Maybe travel. Maybe save money for kids' college education or first car. You know, things that are ACTUALLY important.

At least, I wish that's what my parents did. They were never good at planning for our futures. I won't make their mistake!
