If you have any accidental house hold insurance id claim on that , claim the full price of a new laptop. My first thought when I seen the picture is it had been run over by a pick up truck or something, that's some major damage there.

I wouldn't do that. People should do the right thing.

Thanks for all the comments, I really appreciate everyone taking time to reply to my predicament. I was getting frustrated at the people who were saying stuff like it's gonna cost you a ton of money etc etc.

It was a complete accident, and I will bring it into the store and see what they can do about it. Definitely seems like honest is the way to go.

Thanks all! Sorry for lack of responses, just went for a grueling 40mile bike ride.

Everyone should invest in a good road bike, so much fun.

I suggest whatever the outcome is, that you get a better bag and case. Protect your investment. Since my first Powerbook, I've always carried mine in a Timbuk2 Messenger bag. The Timbuk2 Blogger that I bought for my MBP has a separate compartment for the laptop that fit really snug. The compartment has a velcro closer. Outside the bag it has two types of closers, a velcro and plastic buckle closer. Even if I forget to close the plastic buckle, the velcro keep everything together. No zippers. Also a nice Tucano Sleeve case too.

Don't feel bad. It happens. I had my Powerbook G4 slide off the bed. Falling to the carpeted floor and sliding down the blanket, it put a nice dent in the side near the USB ports.

GOod luck with everything

Yeah agreed, I looked into timbuk2 the bags are ugly and doesn't fit my style (too hipster for me, sorry). Anyone have other bags to recommend?

It fell out of my bag! The corner where the charging port is now on a 30 degree slant, the unibody is completely bent and the screen doesn't really close all the way now. The bottom casing is absolutely messed (it's like an L shape)

What can I do? And how much do you think it would cost to repair such a thing? Do you think Apple can take care of the repair at a discounted rate? I'm don't really want to spend > $500 on a repair for this computer that I've already spent >$2000 on

Any tips would be helpful thanks! (pics if anyone wants)

It's still very cosmetic problems though, the computer still works miraculously very well.

Outch.... (heart pain)...

Well, if you are good with your hands and have all the necessary tools, perhaps you can do the surgery yourself.

My question is why spend so much money on a new release mac laptop and not have a sleeve or a case for it? Or even a bag. I dont understand why ppl take risk like this? I mean its your money why invest to have something like this happen? All you had to do was get a sleeve it would have SAVED the fall. Sorry to hear hope it works out for you.

Mate these unibody macs are probably made from the best tolerances out of a billet (single block of alum.) i doubt they will repair, probably will take yours a charge you X amount for a replacement.

I can be wrong of course, cheers !

it's not unreasonable to be upset at apple's build quality...

for example, it took them forever to offer apple care+ for iphones, despite virtually EVERYONE breaking their screens at some point

I believe what you're referring to stems from a lack of personal responsibility and sense of entitlement that some people seem to have, not build quality. I have never broken my screen, because I take care of things that cost a lot of money.

Accidents happen and I didn't read any sense of entitlement into the post. I think being honest and reasonable with the Genius is the only way.

Let us know how it goes OP!

I wasn't referring to the OPs post. I was responding to the guy I quoted, who was talking about supposedly everyone breaking their iphone screens as if it's somehow a reflection on build quality and not general carelessness.

It's a computer. Not a basketball. It's not designed to be dropped.

Neither is a basketball. That's designed to be bounced and/or dribbled. Not dropped. I'm not sure anything is designed for the sole purpose of specifically dropping it. A lot of things can be dropped without consequence - like a basketball.

Is that what you meant sir?

Expect to pay at the most, $539, if there is no damage to your screen. That's the price of the top case with battery($399) and bottom plate($101), plus 39 for repair charge. Hopefully, they'll be nice about it and repair it for free if they feel sorry for you. Goodluck.

Your Tone sounds like Im suggesting something wrong,

Here in the UK, and Im assuming the OP is in N.America, we can claim for house hold accidental damage to TV's carpets etc , Electrical goods on your household insurance if that is covered in your policy. Nothing wrong with that if it was a genuine accident.

why pay insurance and not use it?

anyway good luck to the OP hope you get it sorted.

my mac air was in a backpack with no cover or sleeve. put the backpack on a chair and walked away. the backpack wasnt balanced and fell backwards off the chair 3 feet to a wooden floor. i practically **** my pants. the mac air being so thin and all. however there was no damage. so i got really really lucky. I feel for you. that really sucks. you were not so lucky.

there is no damage to the cover or screen it seems. hopefully wont be to much for a bottom chasis.

i'm going to agree with the poster on reshaping the case with blocks of wood and a mallet. you'd be amazed how ductile thin aluminum can be.

i'd heat it up too - but i don't know how comfortable you are doing these things.

best luck either way.

This laptop isn't very sturdy.

Hope you're joking. You dropped it, what do you expect?

It's just like any other device. Make sure it's secure, even if you're biking. Invest in a good messenger bag that has an extra strap for the waist or a good backpack with a laptop insert. You spend $2,000+ on a laptop and expect not to when it comes to it being secure while moving rapidly on a bicycle?

I would just get it fixed and move on. Just be careful next time and take precaution. Bad things happen.

Believe me, if you dropped a plastic Sony Vaio that costs the same as an rMBP, it would be in pieces right now.
