Does your GPU support Core Image? I wonder if that might give better resoults?

No, it doesnt :( . As you can see in my signature, I have nVidia GeForce 2 MX

How is Tiger for General Use... Do windows move nicely and open fast? Notice anything graphicaly slow in the 2d Aspect?

Yes, they do. I think it's Quartz Extreme that animates OS X for me, not Core Image. So the speed is same as it was in Panther. But it is faster than in Panther, as you can see from my Xbench (page 5)
:D

Archive & Install preserves your settings (basically your user library) in an archive folder. It effectively performs a clean install and then imports your old settings. This saves a lot of time and is often just as good as a clean install in terms of stability. It's generally more reliable than a straight upgrade, but may be not quite as seamless (I still think it's more worth it to do an archive & install). You can then erase the archived system when you've decided that your system has been running well and that you don't need any more of your old system files (I generally wait a few months before deleting the archive).

I'm a little slow today, so I'm going to ask someone to clarify what has been said so far about Archive and Install:

Archive and Install means that the users settings in all applications, all system settings, bookmarks, plug-ins for Mozilla and Safari, etc, will all be preserved. These things are considered a backup of your "old system" and is saved in a separate file called "Previous System." An A&I also means that a fresh, brand new install of Tiger is done on your system, meaning you get a full installation rather than just an upgrade. However, all your systems settings and bookmarks are moved over. The "Previous System" folder is there, but you can't boot from it. Its there "just in case." Maybe an Applecare tech can help you using the Previous System folder if you have trouble after Tiger installation.

Problem is that if I'm having trouble with something on my system, it may get moved over to my new Tiger install because I may have preserved my problem by doing an archive and install. A clean install would be good if I've been having problems with something, or some program keeps crashing or something.

Sound right?

Weird. When I installed Tiger all my effects - expose, genie animation, even scrolling up/down, was very slow and choppy on my eMac with 32mb VRAM. Panther was very smooth, however. I don't understand whats up. I actually reinstalled Panther because it was unbearable.

I'm kind of pissed the ripple effect only works on core-image enabled machines...it's totally in their demo of dashboard with no "*" or special note telling people they're required to have a core-image enabled machine to enjoy the ripple effect.

Don't get me wrong, I'm still pretty sure I'm going to enjoy dashboard just fine, but I was really looking forward to rubbing the ripple in all my Windows user friends and their boring fading menus.

Yea, I miss ripple too... :(

I'd imagine all the Mac mini users would be pretty pissed off. But what did they expect when they bought a $499 machine?

I didnt buy 499$ machine, I bought 1500 $ machine and I still dont get that damn ripple effect. My Mac is almost 3 years old though...

Are you sure Spotlight wasn't indexing? I've been reading others' accounts that the initial indexing can be resource-intensive and that the system smooths up again when it's done.

Yet another Archive / Install query

So, is Archive/Install smart about Apple apps?

If it backs up all your applications and system, installs, then restores the applications - then what happens to things like Safari and utilities?

Is Archive/Install smart enough not to copy your old Safari over the new one? Can someone confirm this?

Thanks!! :D

Does anyone here even have a legitamite version of Tiger? (i.e. not stolen). It seems ever since a vesion appeared on a file sharing site dozens and dozens of people have it - just a coincidence?

Not a coincidence, lots of people downloaded it and announced that they now have it, without actually saying where they got it from. In one thread, people asked for photos of the box, DVD, etc. I'm the only person that supplied a photo  (although a couple of other people supplied photos in other threads, such as this one)

If you scroll back there are links to threads from Moderators like Nermal, and the poster of this thread has a picture of his user manual. Granted anyone can print a color manual, but it appears legit

Yeah....i've only seen one person that actually has a legal copy of Tiger.

Oh no, I saved $500 but I lost, sniff, a pointless system effect... The shame

That is a good way to put it! I usually turn stuff like that off anyway. I don't even like when the Doc does it's magnify thing, I end up clicking on the wrong icon all the time (yes I am THAT slow)

A lot of early installers are legit

Engadget is reporting that Apple goofed and sent out a lot of orders too early:

http://www.engadget.com/entry/1234000777041145/

Interestingly, it also claims that these mistakenly sent early orders will not be supported by Apple, and must be returned. :(

Are Apple tracking the package serial numbers? Is this why some early installers aren't able to autoupdate - they're not being supported?

It might be a wise move to sheck this support story out if you've received a legit copy already. It would be annoying to spend a week installing apps and tuning a system that won't be supported.

They couldn't make this "threat" unless they can track unique IDs or somehow ID those who register early.

The real question I have is why would they make such demands when they screwed up?

Can someone please answer the 2 questions about CoreImage on this page, please? ;)

Secondly, I believe that if Apple or any company makes a mistake, they shouldn't take it out on their customers. What's done is done. It was Apple's mistake, not the user's. If anything, they should ask for it back in a letter, but offer something in return. They made the mistake, and now you, the customer, has to scramble around like an idiot to give them back their box and the Tiger DVD?

That's apparently been updated since, as per an internal memo fm Apple ->

QUOTE
Some customers are receiving Mac OS X v10.4 "Tiger" before the scheduled launch date of April 29. Until April 29, please support these customers as follows:

* Do NOT deny support or accuse the customer of piracy. The customers may have legitimately purchased the product and be eligible for support.

* Tier 1: Escalate Tiger calls to Tier 2. Tier 2 must take the escalation.

* Tier 2 and Mac Genius: Support the customer as usual. Try to capture as much information as possible about how and where the customer purchased Tiger. After you are done supporting the customer, escalate this information via an "FYI" RTA.

After the April 29 software launch, you no longer a need to escalate these cases in order to capture this information.
