That's apparently been updated since, as per an internal memo fm Apple ->

QUOTE
Some customers are receiving Mac OS X v10.4 "Tiger" before the scheduled launch date of April 29. Until April 29, please support these customers as follows:

* Do NOT deny support or accuse the customer of piracy. The customers may have legitimately purchased the product and be eligible for support.

* Tier 1: Escalate Tiger calls to Tier 2. Tier 2 must take the escalation.

* Tier 2 and Mac Genius: Support the customer as usual. Try to capture as much information as possible about how and where the customer purchased Tiger. After you are done supporting the customer, escalate this information via an "FYI" RTA.

After the April 29 software launch, you no longer a need to escalate these cases in order to capture this information.

Seems like a balanced way to manage the situation.

I still wonder about unique IDs per disc...this makes me think not as it doesn't actually mention anything like that to be gathered by staff.

Apple Store charged my account this morning(4/25).
Sounds like my copy should be shipping very soon.
(California to Tucson is usually 3 days ground)

On your order status page, does it say it shipping ground though? Mine says 2-day, and I just got the standard shipping.

Well, you (probably like all of us) ordered with standard (free) shipping, but with the additional promise of delivery to your door by Friday. It's Apple's issue how it gets there in time. Mine still says processing -- if it is still unfulfilled by Wednesday, then it's Apple's responsibility to overnight it to fulfill their obligation. But hopefully it won't come to that! ;)

Are you sure Spotlight wasn't indexing? I've been reading others' accounts that the initial indexing can be resource-intensive and that the system smooths up again when it's done.

I thought this might have been the issue too, so I left the computer on overnight. In the morning, it was still choppy. I've even tried restarting several times but that didn't help.

Is there any way to completely disable dashboard? Like stop it from running?

you could probably try killing the process via the terminal or activity monitor..

type in "top" then hit return in the terminal... look for dashboard then remember the number next to it, example mine was 816.. then press control-z to stop the top process and type "kill 816" .. i havent tried this as i like dashboard in for me when i typed in top and looked at dashboard...

you can see it was taking up no CPU %

816 DashboardC 0.0%

you can also probably to this via activity monitor... Utilities -> Activity Monitor

and look for Dashboard and force quit it.. as i said i havent done this but i dont think it should do any harm.. just like killing the dock.. anywase if you dont feel comfortable doing it dont..

it should be easy to start up again. either bythe Dashboard application in the Application -> Dashboard or a restart should do the job..

I got 4 partitions on hard drive (one is PhotoShop scratch disk) I hope that wil not affect indexing in Spotlight. :)

some people have said that spotlight has missed all partitions and hard drives other than their starup.. as for me it appears to have done all my drives

I didn't try doing it through the terminal, but I did look through the Activity Monitor for the dashboard app, and all I found were the individual dashboard widgets running, not the actual dashboard app.

Anyway, it doesn't matter anymore, I am back to Panther and it runs nice and fast again.

Hi guys,

First post from a newbie, although I have been reading the boards for what seems like years :)

A query over which version of Tiger you are buying if you have multiple machines - are you going for the standard version or the 'Family Pack' thing where you can install on up to 5 machines?

Does the standard box allow you to install on more than one machine?

I have a 12" PowerBook G4 and so does my other half, so I'm thinking I'll just get the standard one and install on both - will that work?

Cheers

Deej.

It would be illegal for you to install the Standard version of Mac OS X Tiger on more than one computer, although it is possible to install it on as many computers as you want.

Thanks Joe, as I suspected then.

Puts me into a bit of a dilemma though; do I pay more and stay above the law, or just buy the Standard version and try my luck?
