boot from tiger dvd... launch disk utility.. format drive using write random zero option.. install tiger.. knock yourself out lol.. still the most clean way possible... i cannot stress it enough

But then I need to know in detail how to backup and reinstall my email, bookmarks, cookies?, keychains, photos, music, all my apps, all my docs, zinio reader files, etc etc
I am not confident I know where all this stuff is to be sure I can get it backed up and reimport it.

One interesting sidenote to my fresh install of Tiger on my G5--I installed Keynote 2.0 from a disk, and cannot update to 2.0.1.

My assumption is that rather than compound the problem, Apple has chosen to have Tiger "deny" the update. On the other hand, as I did a simple Tiger "upgrade" on my laptop, I can run KN 2.0.1 on it as the Keynote update was done under 10.3.8.

I think I read somewhere that a KN 2.0.1 file would not play on KN 2.0, which could make for some interesting situations...I have yet to test this or determine if there is some other reason Keynote would not update to 2.0.1 on
a pure Tiger install.
you just wait until 04/29
it's possible that software update system isn't ready yet
that's why Apple so aware about early leaks
people think that Tiger has bugs but apparently
that's not a Tiger bug that's just not all web services are ready
so be patient

one of the things I don't like in OS X is it's responsiveness when compared to a fast machine using XP. One of the things I'm talking about is the resizing of windows. With OS X the resizing, taking the bottom right hand corner and moving it, is kinda slow... does anyone with tiger notice a speed difference with this?

I hope I'm making myself clear, cause I'm kinda sleepy right now, and I might not be making much sense... :)

Tiger and Carbon Copy Cloner

So now that I've got Tiger on my G5 and my PB, I'm anxious to do a mirror image bootable backup...it seems Carbon Copy Cloner 2.3 freezes at the point where you enter your administrative password just before "unlocking" it to tell it to go ahead and clone...ugh...did it on both my machines.

Does anyone know a "foolproof" way to make a bootable backup that retains all settings ?

that's not necessary true
java 1.4.2_07 could be default JVM
and Java 5 could be installed too (I doubt that, though)
most likely Java 5 will be installed via Software Update

I pre-ordered Tiger the day it was announced, but I still haven't received it. I'm a recent switcher, and as far as Windows is concerned, I know the clean install is the only way to go. Concerning Apple, I would more naturally trust them and go with the update, since it's quicker and more convenient.
Is it really risky? Like, out of 10 people doing it, how many have serious problems afterwards?

if you don't have 3rd party system extensions you should be OK
if you do it depends
some could be incompatible with new OS

did you try to use DiskUtilities (create disk image)?

I would still recommend Archive & Install with user and network settings preservation. It's just much better for stability and reliability. I've gone through this on 3 Macs in my house with Panther—2 updates, one archive & install. I ended up having to do an archive & install all over again on one of the updates because it started having odd problems (particularly with WebKit—Safari ceased to work, as did any WebKit-dependent app). I'm not sure how much Apple's improved the Upgrade function with 10.4, but I plan on sticking to A&I for my own PowerMac G4 and PBG4.

Same. A&I makes the most sense...you get pretty much a new system but have all your apps, bookmarks, docs, etc. in the same place. Just much easier than clean and less buggy/problematic than upgrade.

You're right, a better test would be:

ls /System/Library/Frameworks/JavaVM.framework/Versions/

Thats great exan. Let us know how the xbench on Tiger compares to your Panther benchmark. How are you enjoying Tiger? Does it feel speedier?

Archive and Install Question

I noticed that you all were talking about archive and install vs. clean install, so I figure I'll go ahead and ask here.

I have managed to forget my Master Password. Will an Archive and Install reset that, or will I have to do a Clean Install of Tiger to reset it?

I've used the "Restore" command in Disk Utility to make an exact clone of my hard drive. Very easy...

You can reset your password by booting from your OS X install CD and then selecting "Change password" from the menu bar. You shouldn't have to reinstall anything.
