Apple is not going to sell new i9 2018 imacs at the same price as 2017 models, the price will increase so anyone on a budget ought to note that.
They did it with macbooks last time.
I don't see anything in my post which stated it had to be an i9 system.

First thoughts after using the computer for a couple days. I didn't get to really spend too much time with it as Ive been swamped with work. The screen is big, almost too big, resolution and space is really nice though. Haven't spent time with any photo editing although i think it will be awesome. its pretty fast, the i7-7700 is probably overkill, storage at 3 tb is pretty decent.Ill decide by wednesday to see if keeping or returning

my laptop is a 2009 mid 13inch mbp 2.26 c2duo, upgraded to 8gb ram , 2x 500gb hds, slow as ****, but took me thru med school and residency, hardly use it nowadays. Now my plex server and photo repository can be moved to the Imac, and ill get a new 15 inch later.

Pop an SSD in that puppy and I think you'll find that it ain't slow as **** anymore. The 2009 is very easy to upgrade in this fashion too. I have a 2009 Unibody, a 2012 Unibody, and a 2016 tbMBP. I'm not doing any serious data crunching on the 2009, but for regular tasks, I'm not gritting my teeth waiting for the beachball to go away. It's pretty snappy ever since I swapped in an SSD.

As for the iMac, the wisdom around here always goes "buy it if you need it and stop second guessing your decision, but if you can wait and want to wait, hold off till the next release."

At this point of hardware evolution, we're not seeing paradigm shifting updates anymore. Everything is incremental at this point, but as someone else said, if they're offering bigger SSD drives, that's a pretty big deal.

If you can get by on your old machine with some speed improvements a la SSD drive, then maybe you should return it and wait. You can get a new HP 120GB SSD for $25 on eBay! A plug and play "toaster" oven interface for those 500GB hard drives you have would then run you around $30 or so. So if your needs would be met this way, go ahead and return it and wait out the new ones whenever that might be. If they underwhelm, the last gen is likely to be available at a discount or refurb units could be had so you may not be losing out on pricing.

On the other hand, if that new iMac serves a real need today, just keep it.

I’d return it - why not wait a month, see what comes, sounds like there’s no urgency? - and upgrade the RAM.
I have a 2017 27" iMac. I bought it for one reason: user upgradable RAM. Thus don't pay extra to have the Apple RAM installed. Instead go to Crucial and buy what you need.
Also, get an internal SSD. And maybe an external drive or two. Have a 256SSD installed. But my music and photos are on an external.

I'd return it but it's because Fusion drives are unacceptable to me. A 2T blade is my minimum requirement and wicked fast in a 2017 now that they're NVMe PCIe 3/4.

You can crack open a 2017 and pop in an SATA drive now that 2T is under $300 and 4T is under $800. That or run an external SSD over USB C.

I won't allow a slow, mechanical heat pump inside any Mac I own or service—even my legacy G4 has an SSD nowadays.

I can't have that small a blade for what I do but absolutely agree that an SSD onboard + an external is a far better way to go than a Fusion drive.

I bought a 2017 27" a little over a month ago and I am thrilled with it, however I _needed_ the system at time of purchase and waiting for the refresh was not an option. If you can afford to wait for the refresh (in terms of time), you'll probably feel better. The further we get through the year, the closer we'll get to the inevitable refresh.

As many people have already said, get an SSD. Even if you get a 512GB SSD and add USB or Thunderbolt storage later on, your patience will appreciate the speed increase in having all your apps load up in a split second.

I am not sure why people would suggest doing Apple a favour and returning the machine unopened; they're a big company, they'll be fine. But it seems as if you've used it already, so lol @ them

Keep it for sure. So what if a new one comes out, a new one is always coming out.

Personally i'd open it up and replace the 128GB SSD in the Fusion drive with a 1TB one, but that's just me.

Keep it and use it.

So you can replace the ssd part with in the fusion drive ? I have a 3tb fusion 2017
What can u replace it with ?
thx :)

Ok thx
But i guess since its a brand new machine voiding the 5 year warranty would be a bit foolish, ill check with the apple service center in my country if they can install it and keep the warranty.

LOL, well yeah there's that of course! I don't think you'll get Apple to install anything other than their own drives. Just buy an external drive enclosure and the SATA SSD drive of your choice and use it as an external drive.

In what country can you get a 5 year warranty on an Apple product? In the US, the warranty is one year, extendable to three years with the purchase of AppleCare.

You can replace the mechanical hard drive (HHD) part of the fusion assembly with any SATA SSD you want. A 2T costs around $350 or less. You can get a 4T Samsung 860 EVO for $799.99 list price.

The internal SSD is an NVMe PCIe 3/4 blade and must be replaced with the same. There are aftermarket blades and adapters on the market. A 2T costs $850 on eBay.
