I'm so excited; I know the website says "Pending" but I went ahead and ordered the drive anyways; I'll be putting it in my Macbook Pro; it wasn't too bad waiting for this model. I got overnight shipping, so when it's available, I'll have it the next day.

And I go have the 17" and I could have gotten the Hitachi, but I prefer to have bit of space between the drive and the chassis for heat dissipation.

Anyhow, anyone else going to order it now?

no i wont be getting one, because my 15" cant take them!!!

I would much rather have an external RAID array and keep all large files that aren't used much on there instead of sacrificing speed on the laptop hard drive.

Plus, don't Hitachi's have high failure rates?

I have had more Hitachis than any other brand drive and have never had one fail on me!

I've seen several 500GB external drives... and bigger, up to 2 or 3 TB, on the market for some time, so I'm missing what the fuss is about. I could have gotten a 500GB external when I bought my last 200GB 7200rpm drive from OWC, but I wanted maximum performance. I'll buy larger external drives when they make them faster, more compact and reasonably priced. Speed and portability may be more important to me than to others, but every time I have occasion to move 20 or 30 GB of data from one drive to another, it does it so fast (Firewire 800) that it's hardly noticeable. My music files are almost 200GB, so I'd love to find a 500GB, 7200rpm drive as small as my OWC 200GB drive, for a reasonable price!

And what drives are you saying are "Pending"? The 500GB drive from OWC is in stock and ships same day!

500gb in 2.5" is a new thing! The link you posted is 200gb.

omg are you serious??

i highly doubt that they are in australia yet, can i have a link to the drive??

Well that Samsung drive they have on OWC is the 9.5mm drive; unfortunately I don't know about Australia.

so a 9.5mm drive will fit into my 15" mbp? thats pretty good news, id hate to see the price tag. at least $400 AUD for it i bet. i highly doubt i could even find one. thanks anyways

Wirelessly posted (Apple Communication Device: Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU like Mac OS X; en) AppleWebKit/420.1 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/3.0 Mobile/4A102 Safari/419.3)

I'm getting one.

Correct me if I'm wrong, doesn't the Hitachi 500GB fits the MBP 17" but is too tall for the 15"? Which brings me to another question: just how much faster is a 7200 over a 5400? Can't remember which, but isn't there a site devoted to answering this sort of question? (tia)

I bought the WD 320GB 2.5" drive a few months ago so I'll be waiting until there are 1TB 7200RPM drives until upgrading. I'll be waiting a while but I have more than enough space available on my HD now (210+GB).

I just read a test (on a German internet site) about the Samsung M6 500GB drive. They said it was very silent, really fast, and they put in on the #1 spot on their list of 2.5" drives. Can't wait to get one... :)

Yes, I know, the link I posted is for the 200GB 7200 drive that I just got a month ago. Larger drives such as the 320 and 500 were available then, but at the slower 5400 speed. That's why I don't understand the hoopla.

The Samsung is the very first (and still not available retail) 500GB 2.5 that will fit in a MBP 15" and it's 5400, not 7200. There is as yet no 500GB 7200s. You may be thinking of discs available for desktops, not the 2.5 footprint (and definitely not the 9.5 height needed for MBP 15, at least as far as I can tell).

My best, is that even though the Samsung is 5400 rpm, it will still be very popular due to the size.

I upgraded to a 320 Gig WD two months ago. From a space side of view it's just perfect for my MacBook, I've got all my Music, Videos, photos and programs on there and still have about 60 Gigs free for the future. If I wanted the 500 I might have waited. But I bet there are people who need even more space on their portables.

Isn't this an external hd? how do you connect it as internal

Sorry...I'm still a noob...

They can't sell the drives retail yet, so they sell it with the enclosure; it just happens the drive has a 3 year warranty and the enclosure a 1 year warranty; I asked about taking the drive out and they said it doesn't void the enclosure warranty.

i think im gonna do this, i cant justify the cost nor time waiting for the drive. i only have 6gb left damnit!!!!!

a 320gb WD will cost me $163, the hitachi 500gb is a good $350. ill just use my external HD's for other stuff :)

Hello,
I have the 320 WD 5400 in and it is as fast as the 200GB Hitachi 7200 drive a friend has in his 2.6 MBP! Both drives allmost empty the 7200 drive was about 1mb/s faster in both, read and write. Of course there is a better access time of about 1,5ms.

edit:
the 500gb samsung must be even faster as the 320WD 5400 drive and should therefor beat the 200gb 7200 drives. Interesting question is 500gb 5400 vs 320gb 7200!
