surely nice, but 5400 is fast enough. also 7200 would drain the battery faster. and I've also heard stories with MB with 7200 drives which began vibrating there where the HD is. Hope this isn't true, but you never know.

@DoFoT9: you may also consider the Samsung 320 GB 5400 drive. Pretty much the same as the WD though. I bought the WD because it was a bit cheaper and I made good experiences with WD years. But other prefer the Samsung. So just look at the prices and maybe some reviews, though they weren't helpful for me.

And for people asking what I need "so" much space for on a notebook? It's my main and only machine I am using. On a tdesktop you would easily have 500 GB and more, so why not on a notebook. Do people with a 160 GB iPod have to need all of their music on the go? Maybe no, but it's nice to have. And for some people it is important.

Not to mention a HDD is faster when its not filled up. A bigger one stays longer working fast. So the bigger the better it is:)

1. i really doubt that the difference between a 7200RPM drive and a 5400RPM drive would be THAT much. your looking at, what, 5 minutes?? having the faster drive means it gets it done quicker.

2. im not confident in Samsung, hardly in WD either, but i am on a budget so i will have to go with the WD. IMHO Hitachi>Seagate>WD>Samsung

3. yea i know, my 100gb is full!! i need so much more space, and yea i have a good amount of space at home (see sig) but on the move i need a whole bunch as well. i have filled my 60gb ipod, filled my 2gb flashy, filled my MBP, filled a coupla 500gb's. space is needed everywhere. sure, some people dont need it because they just use it for internet browsing, emails and stuff. but files these days are getting extremely large. (btw it seems like it is important to me clearly haha)

They can't sell the drives retail yet, so they sell it with the enclosure; it just happens the drive has a 3 year warranty and the enclosure a 1 year warranty; I asked about taking the drive out and they said it doesn't void the enclosure warranty.

I checked their site, it still says "Pending". I called them and they told me that they don't have the drive and they are not sure when they will get it. I am not sure now, if I should order or just wait?

BTW, is there any chance the price of this will drop to around $150 in six months - if it can, may be I should order the WD320GB now and upgrade again in another 6 months !!!

it could be a month or more before they "get" them. I hate websites that do this, with no indication of when they will "get" them.

"Here, take my money, and ill get my drive one day." no thanks. By then, you could have ordering options, not just for one drive.

They could have them tomorrow, but i really doubt they will get them before anyone else, which is why my money is staying put! I do want the combo (with fw800 enclosure though)

if someone is installing FCS in a MBP, it will take about 50GB of space, but i cant image anyone doing it there. Logic studio also takes similar space.

Oh crap; I'm uninstalling that; I didn't notice the 50GB requirement when I installed it; all I did was check everything...

The best way to save space on a MBP running FCS is to skip the install of the DVD Studio Pro templates and Motion Templates and tutorials. That gives you back about 15GB or so.

I am going to grab that 500GB one as soon as they really start shipping. I don't like giving some store my money then waiting around like a weirdo wondering when it's going to ship.

When they ship to people in droves, i will order mine. I am going to get the faster 320GB 7200 rpm drive for the book though, and use the 500 as a backup drive/scratch disk/misc crap/large file exchange. Probably going to rip out the 100GB drive in the G-Tech which will be out of warranty soon.

p.s. I don't do upgrades myself, since there is a change Apple will void my warranty, and I don't want to have to go through the trouble of putting my old drive back in for repairs, and lying to the geniuses about my MBP history. Buying the drive and paying a certified tech $50 to do the install is a lot better than voiding a $250 warranty IMO.

$50? I've heard more like $150-200. And are you speaking about the genius bar at Apple Stores or an independent Apple Certified Tech? Just curious, since for $50 it would be worth avoiding the hassle, imo. But $150-200 I'd rather try it myself.

I do it for my friends for $50..I'm not authorized obviously but I've done it a million times.

It's a certified tech in the Maryland area that does it. There are few here, one is Gaithersburg and one in Baltimore City. They last quoted me $50 when I was trying to upgrade my C2D MBP.

All I have to do is bring them the drive and the Book, and they put it in for me and transfer all the data.

Thats a good rate for a few minutes work

Yes it is. I hear that it only takes about a half hour for an efficient person to do it, then set up the data transfer and walk away to work on something else.

$50 is a good price for peace of mind that someone that knows what they're doing is doing it!

yep thats about right, but after doing it a few times ive managed to shave it down to 20mins

I was taking the mick, good on you like i said thats good money for not alot of work

This is what I want to look into. 500GB would be nice, but with photography and digital music as my uses, that 7200rpm is something that is very nice.

I have a 7200rpm in here right now and I still get about the same battery life has people with th 5400rpm drives. Like someone else said. Maybe 5-10 minutes difference.

500GB/7200rpm would be nice. But, I think for now, I could settle for a 320GB/7200rpm.

Thanks. I'm not too far from an Apple store, but I didn't think the genius bar does this sort of work, so I might check on these.

My 500GB is shipping out today; I'm psyched; will have it tomorrow!

I'll take some pics and all. :D

I've got the exact same Macbook Pro as you except for the hard drive. I just ordered the Samsung with 2 day shipping...so hopefully by Thurs! Please post install pix. I've swapped HDs on my Powerbook G4, but I haven't opened my MBP...yet. Thanks.

I'm going to do a whole run down from what the drive looks like to swapping to cloning drives all the way to transferring my BootCamp over.

Speed is too important to me - and 200GBs is fine - Hopefully my next drive is a 256GB SSD, not another hard drive...

Naw, I hope the next drive is a 256GB SSD that is faster than a 7200 rpm version and just as cheap or a little bit more expensive.

As of now, the fastest drive with the highest capacity is a 320GB 7200 rpm one for about $250 or so. Until that 256 SSD comes down from it's $1,300 price tag HDD will be king.
