When will they release Lion?

I'm ready to buy my new MBP but want Lion too.
Any guesses when it will be out?

Isn't there a free upgrade to the new OS if it releases within 30 days of your purchase? Is that correct?

Congrats to the OP, you have a beautiful and powerful machine. I hope you will be satisfied with it and serve you for many years to come.

Congratulations to the OP on his new 17 inch MBP. It's a powerful machine, which I am sure will give you many years of excellent service.

Pay no attention to twits who pop off with nastiness such as saying that paying nearly $3,000 for your MBP was "insane." Nasty remarks like that are a hallmark of jealousy, not analysis. In 2003 I paid nearly $3,200 for a 17 inch Powerbook G4. Looked at from that perspective, the price you paid for your MBP was a bargain.

Can someone explain why the 2.3GHz quad core i7 costs $250 more than the 2.2GHz quad core? I understand that the 2.3GHz chip has more modern architecture but the price difference still surprised me.

The 2.3GHz has a better graphics card (AMD Radeon HD 6750M with 1GB GDDR5 memory). Ooops. Disregard. My bad. I was comparing the 2.2 to the 2.0

If you're talking about the 17", no. The base 2.2 has the same 1GB 6750M. the $250 really is just for the processor.

BTW, Geekbench of 10K here and Cinebench of 5.14. (Skype and other stuff still running)

The 2820QM is $190 more than the 2720QM from Intel (though probably less due to Apple's volume discounts). I suppose the rest is the "Apple tax."

nice .. just picked up my 15in 2.3 quad mbp hires antiglare .. only hdd option they had in store was the 750gb 5400 rpm .. will eventually change it with an ssd then switch the drive into the ODD but for now im stuck with the 5400rpm drive

The 64-bit Geekbench score on the 2.3GHz MBP config is about on par with the 3.33GHz Quad-Core 2009 Mac Pro, which scored about 11500. I had a 2.93GHz Quad-Core 2009 Mac Pro, and it scored about 10423 on Geekbench. That would make the new Sandy Bridge as fast (or faster) than a Quad Core Nehalem Mac Pro....pretty cool! That is also faster than a 2.93GHz top-spec Quad-Core iMac.

The 2.2GHz Quad-Core i7 has an L3 Cache of 6MB, whereas the 2.3GHz Quad-Core i7 has an L3 Cache of 8MB. The Cache is where the real difference lies, not the 100MHz between them.

Congratz on the new machine! That's an awesome score, I only get a little more then half your score (early 2010 i7). How is the new GPU? Played any games on it?
Just interested, don't have the cash to upgrade to the new one. Bought the mac with a 3 - 4 years use in mind.

jetjaguar, any chance your machine also came with 8gb of memory? Reason I ask it it sounds like the retail stores might be selling maxed-out versions - and if so I'd just as soon get it locally then BTO.

TIA.

Seems the i7 quad core with the 6750 is idling around 50-60 degrees from what i heard from people on this forum.

havnt heard anything about max temps. would appreciate some numbers

The the desktop Turks gpu is a bit faster (800mhz) and scores 13,000 with a phenom x6 which is much slower than the i7-2720qm.

Very promising.

Yes, really want to know if SB makes big difference in terms of temperature as last year's model got too hot but SB is suppose to run cooler?

I really thought I was gonna buy the machine today but lack of high res option for 13 inch really make me seek out the through review of 15 inch including the heat before I can pull the trigger.
