from what he told me they have the same software that is run at apple for pre-orders and activations. I'll find out tomorrow when i go pre-order 3 iPhones for all my 3 upgradeable lines.

Yeah, but a serial number is to a specific phone. I never understood it as something that anyone can just assign to a phone. From your post, you can see that they lied to you. :(

RadioShack did this with the Evo launch. Pre order for $50, you get a $50 gift card towards the purchase of the phone the day it comes out

That was my point. You can't assign a SN to someone without the stock on hand. I just hope RS doesn't set alot of customers up for a major disappointment.

Anyone know if they are gonna have white ones? This seems like the new problem i'm seeing pop up with everyone but apple.

the serials are running off the software apple handed to them. i really doubt 3 radio shacks lied to me when they gave me the same exact info.

Yeah, but in order to do this, then Apple has to find that exact phone and put it in the box that is to go to that RadioShack.

call your radio shack and ask them.. i wouldn't know how it would work. i just know if you order a phone there your guaranteed one.

I just got back from radioshack and the manager said the preorder page had been on their system earlier today but it has since been removed. They also told me that with the preorder I get a 20 dollar credit towards accessories at the time of purchase (the 24th) plus 15% the accessories. All that combined with the fact that radioshack is really close to my house and I will probably be ordering from them.

ok sorry i just called back to make sure its not the SN its the order number :p. The manager messed up but yeah you also get a 20$ credit towards accessories and if you show up early to get your phone you can also get a extra 10$.

All of the above mentioned about accessories, etc. is what makes Radioshack a good place to buy.

So how does this change things now:

Update 2: We've been tipped that Apple may now be blocking third-party retailers from taking pre-orders altogether tomorrow. RadioShack already changed its story on us, and now Best Buy locations have started doing the same, telling us that they definitely won't be taking pre-orders tomorrow but may be by the end of the week. Bottom line -- hit up Apple's website in the morning.

Radioshack just called and said I can refund my gift card tomorrow for cash if I'd like, since the pre-ordering isn't really pre-ordering anymore

I am not trying to be mean, but I did say that something was fishy since they were taking orders before the actual company that even makes the phone!!

At least you found out now, and not later this week!! :)

Tara, do you think if I get home at 3pm from work the Apple pre-order site will still have stock?

not being mean in fact I wouldn't be surprised if the reason some 3rd party retailers are getting the preorder plug pulled on them by apple is because of the fishy tactics they tried to use  hmm something to think about

From what I have read on here, people think that Apple will have plenty in stock for a few days to order online. It might be better to wait until that time only because the website might be slow.

Oh ok, good. I'm just worried the pre-orders will sell out very fast tomorrow.

Just called a local Radioshack.
The rep intimated that he knew all about the i4 pre-order process and that they can't technically call it a pre-order, but rather a Customer something or other. So he takes my name, AT&T line number, zip code, and email address to confirm upgradeability and asked which phone I wanted. He'll call me tomorrow at noon central time (apparently the time across the country that any Radioshack store can officially pre-order) and give me a PIN. They've done away with the $50 deposit thing, so no money transaction required. Told him I'm out of town until 29 Jun. No problem, they'll hold it 'til I come to the store, with my PIN, and pay. He also confirmed they do take trade-ins. Another website said you also get some sort of accessory credit.
Anyway, I'll be waiting for a call about my PIN tomorrow then come back from a trip and go get my new iPhone. They'll get my line activated, even with a FAN, before I leave the store.

You do realize that they are not able to do this, right? I already stated this above and going through with it will not guarantee you an iPhone.

They are done with the deposit because they were probably caught. The website that I posted mentioned that these stores will not be able to let you pre-order until the end of the week.

Just somebody at RadioShack with a "brilliant" idea to try to get a jump on the preorders. This always happens with a coordinated launch like this; someone tries to figure out a way to get around the rules, and the customers end up suffering.
