Would I benefit from using mywi? I use TetherMe with no issues. 5S with verizon unlimited data. I used 25 gigs this month and almost all of that is my Apple TV and iPad.

If you're ok with Tetherme then keep using it.
Mywi just has more useful features and more options.
More details here:
http://intelliborn.com/mywi.html

Features:
Create iPad or iPhone WiFi Hotspot to connect mutiple laptops or mobile devices to share your iPhone/iPad's internet connection
40 bit and 104 bit WEP Security to prevent others from accessing your WiFi HotSpot
Ability to enable USB and Bluetooth Tethering on your iPhone or iPad
Broadcasts the Network Name (SSID) - no need to fuss with creating an adhoc network on your laptop
Shows up and down bandwith usage for iPhone WiFi Tethering or iPhone USB Tethering
Uses less battery and much faster then other tethering apps due to native routing.

that's what i've been using until I just got my internet back since moving. I'm up to 66GB in just over 4 days because I was watching shows on my AppleTV.

for anyone on tmobile and jailbroken, you could use this hacked carrier package: http://www.idownloadblog.com/2014/03/26/hacked-t-mobile-carrier-update/

it basically gives you the native hotspot feature for free, for those who don't want to spend $5 on TetherMe

it also changes other stuff too, so that might be tradeoff for some people who don't like software that isn't from the original "manufacturer" (in this case, T-Mobile)

Got AT&T text using MyWi

I can 100% confirm that AT&T can detect MyWi tethering. I've used it quite often in the past to tether, but never for very long or for very much data (just sending receiving emails, loading a few web pages,..etc). However, recently I used it for a longer duration, but again not very data-heavy activities. My hunch right now is there are detecting tethering if used for a long duration (as opposed to a lot of data). I have no proof other than my own experiences.
After a few months off, I'm going to give Tetherme a try.

Sorry to bring back this post from the dead but something I don't understand...

If you have unlimited data, why are you using any jail broken leech app?

because att and verizon charge extra to tether the internet from your phone to your laptop, which is ridiculous. It's the exact same data you are already paying for. They are double dipping

Got AT&T letter on tethering......

Hi, just got this weekend an e-mail talking about tethering on my daughters line  We have various Iphone 5 and they are all jailbreak and have tether me installed as soon as JB was released for the I5. I was reading today and apparently some people say PDANet is better at masking tethering usage.

Recommendations?

There is no really a "best" way, some people just get lucky, if your account gets flag for review they will see that you are tethering, all you can do is use it only when you need it and try to keep it to a minimum. The application you use won't make a difference

Exactly.
The hack used doesn't make any difference.
People got caught with PdaNet, tetherme, mywi and every other unofficial tethering hack with unlimited iphone plans by AT&T.
There is no foolproof method.
If they catch you again they will switch your data plan and you will not be able to get it back. Your choice if you want to risk it.

When att throttles you down to .5 Mbps after you go over 5gb, tethering doesn't seem like a very useful option.

So glad that Verizon doesn't give a crap how much you tether.

not anymore starting October 1st

Although I don't have Verizon, i'm hoping the FCC will prevent Verizon from doing this

Am I affected by Network Optimization?
Only a small percent of customers will be affected. To be affected, you must be a data customer on an unlimited data plan who is among the top 5% of data users. Network Optimization of 4G LTE devices does not apply to government customers or business customers who have signed a major account agreement.

My usage won't change. I don't meet the criteria.

It might not affect you but my post was meant to say that verizon does care how much data you use now. although, now, i see you that you might have meant verizon doesn't care if you're tethering without paying for it

It would be nice if the FCC would end throttling for all carriers that have unlimited data.

We can dream.

Which can easily be followed by carriers dropping support for grandfathered unlimited plans and telling their customers to change to one of the current ones.

Has anyone used tether.com? I'd pay $30 a year to tether. I just need it for homework. Some of the math sites use flash. :(

I understand it uses an adhoc network, that's fine. I just wonder how the data is perceived on att's side?

My other option is a mobile hotspot of some sort.

When it comes to the iPhone Data Unlimited Plan, ATT is hard on customers that have that and they will change your plan without notice, a lot of customers that had the iPhone data unlimited plan have tethered in the past and abused it, which in ATT eyes customers are causing network issues.

So they have always been hard on the customers that have the unlimited iPhone data plan.

The best way to hide it is to use PDAnet Level 2 tethering, because the user agent that PDAnet is tethering is of a mobile device so that when you browse the web on a laptop or what ever device you use, you will be getting web pages in a mobile form, not desktop, that's the way they hide the tethering from the wireless provider.

I wonder, what with AT&T offering double data plans (at the original price) if anyone will discontinue home internet service and simply tether.

Seems, for many- this would be an ultra cheaper alternative yet with LTE service.
