Tethering, complaints about AT&T and poor analogies. Where have I seen these before? Oh, yeah, in this thread.

Too bad some people can't deal with reality and think complaining on a discussion forum will change things.

1. Pay AT&T what they charge
2. Switch carriers.
3. Tether with or preferably without 'uncertain' feelings.

Some people shouldn't be so judging and need to take a long hard look at themselves!

Received a letter and Text for tethering.

First I got a Text stating I was over 3GB and reduced speeds will result on a unlimited iPhone plan then I received a letter and text for tethering. All I was doing was streaming Netflix. called the number 1-866-679-7134 @ 11:00am was told tethering was detected No jail Break on phone fresh install of IOS 6.1.3. The Att rep said disregard the notice. Now started streaming Netflix after phone call to ATT @ 12:45p got another TEXT tethering detected. Called ATT rep said that was a message that took a while to get to my phone please disregard the message. Clearly they are just looking at how much data is being used. :) Why Throttle if Unlimited plan? Unlimited but can only use 3GB?

I was at 9gb for the month.

Well there is the biggest flag for all. I am on the Data Pro 3GB and I've never been flagged by AT&T, but I stay right at or below my data limit. Hell I can't imagine needed to use 9GB a month, but then I have Wifi access almost everywhere I go.

I have a 2GB plan. Is it possible for me to teether? I would only use it once and awhile with an iPad on a long car ride. I'm jailbroken (of course) and was looking at trying pdanet or something. Any suggestions?

Is PDAnet working now? I had it when the latest evasion JB came out and I could connect my iPad but not pull any data from the interwebs

I'm wondering this as well. I just want a tether app that isn't detectable.

Also, lol "teether" is that the Mexican version of tethering?

I have been tethering since the iPhone 4. And I'm on my second Android phone and still having no problems doing so. Although I was rarely doing it on the 4, and now pretty much use it everyday on Android.

One of the things we keep in mind in the Android community is that AT&T apps are BAD. If you're going to tether, but not be on a plan, you better not even think about using any of their apps, not even the myAT&T one.

I think the real problem here is the Visual Voicemail. Here are some of the standout permissions on Android: FULL NETWORK ACCESS, READ PHONE STATUS AND IDENTITY, CHANGE NETWORK CONNECTIVITY, RETRIEVE RUNNING APPS, VIEW NETWORK CONNECTIONS

The permissions aren't known on iOS, but I bet if you could trace all instances of network access that you would see similar happening in the background.

Used TetherMe last month and got the notice from AT&T to cease or they'll bump me to the 5GB plan. Previous notices were only for going over 2GB of data usage, but now I'm afraid of tethering at all.

lol, ok no wonder they caught up to you.. Seriously, 9GB? Wow. Of course they had to look and see how you were getting 9 gigs.

my gf watches netflix on our unlimited data plan and was over 20gigs last week... we don't tether or have hotspot thanks to at&t blocking that on unlimited plans...

looking into tethering my 5 running 6.1.4 if i can discover a safe way to do it without getting a notice... wanting to use my data on my laptop and ipad mini occasionally...

You need to look into getting some WiFi.
This is the exact reason why they instituted these restrictions.

20gigs?
Your girlfriend watches 20gigs of Netflix in a month?

How is that even possible?

Certainly not in the spirit of what unlimited data was intended.

I've watched hours of HD movies on the iPhone Netflix app and never got a letter from AT&T on the grandfathered unlimited plan.

The only time I got a letter was when I tethered my WiFi iPad to my iPhone with PDANet app.

I have no idea how they know if you are watching NetFlix on the laptop vs just watching it on the iPhone, but they do.

That being said, I don't think AT&T cares if you tether on any of the limited data plan.

I thought it was impossible too until I looked up my data usage for this month and it was at 26gigs. This doesn't count the 11gigs I also used while I was on wifi, and I'm not even a Netflix user, nor do I watch a lot of YouTube vids.

I'm in Canada and the carrier I am with (which is the same pretty much for all the carriers here) don't charge for tethering. I've got a 6 gb / month plan, and don't usually go over 1.5 gb of data. I use wifi at home, and don't ever stream music, movies, etc. because I have a 64 gb phone, so really don't see the need.

Do people really use so many gigs of data? If I'm out and about I don't watch movies, etc. on my devices often, and really can't/don't see how/why people use so much data?

I don't think I have ever tethered (other than to try out the feature) but can see why people would here and there for a bit, but gig after gig seems overkill. Interesting how we all use our devices differently.

It is pretty easy to use a lot of data if you aren't on or have wifi though. Sports and movie streams can easily be 3mbps while I used to use almost 2gb of data streaming high bitrate music on my daily commute alone. I could use 12gb a week if I watched only 1 basketball game a night off league pass on my iPad. You wouldn't necessarily have to be constantly on your device to rack up the data. I thought about giving up my unlimited for a shared data plan so I could sparingly tether (received the cease letter 2 years ago) since I am now on a shared talk plan with 3 people. However it's still cheaper for us to stay put.

Anyone have any Info on the "iRinger" tether app?

haven't used it much as its a pita to set up but will be soon.

non-jailbroken ios7

I have AT&T with unlimited data and have used MyWi for a few years and never received any notice. The most data I have used at any given time was less than a 1GB, always untethered. My guess is that you are using a suspicious amount of data and got flagged. Hope this helps.

Same for me until this week. They finally got me. I had used less than a gig each month and in fact in most months less than 1/2 gig.
