if the matte version is indeed the same matte finish as the previous 17" MBP...
...It will be a tough call...
If the matte version is noticeable better than previous 17" MBP...go matte...

They said at the keynote its the same old screen.

does the battery life live up to its claim?

With 9600M on, I set screen to around 80% bright. … I did not play game/movie …only surf internet and copy files and install applications… battery downs to 80% in 1 hour and 5 mins…So, it counts to around 5 hours 25 mins… not bad..

OK, today is really busy day:
8:50am: I tracked my order and found that it was already at Fedex local facility. So, I called Fedex and asked if I can go to pick it up (on-line tracking showed they will deliver it tomorrow). The lady told me that they will deliver it today (maybe because here is a small town?)
So, waiting…
9:50am: a guy knocked the door…
10:00am: I turned it on… the backlight is even… no dead pixel so far… I took pics with my phone and uploaded to macrumors…
10:10am: I turned it off…I will replace the hard drive with a 128GB G.Skill Titan SSD.
10 screws needs to be removed…When I worked on the fourth one, my screwdriver was broken …
10: 20am: I drove to Sears, … looking for screwdriver… Can not find a proper one… go to radio shark…found a six-screwdriver set, $6.99…
10:40am: I drove to office…began to work on the other 7 screws…new screwdriver was broken again…OK, MBP is solid, however, the$6.99 six-screwdriver set is a piece of shXt…
11:10am: Finally, I took off all 10 screws (actually, the left-middle screw was not screwed properly, I should blame the guy who assembly it. Once I took it off, it can not be tighted again)
I installed the SSD…
Turn it on… insert OSX DVD…use disk utility … MBP CANNOT recognize the SSD!
OK…
12:00pm: bring out my old MBP… google for a solution …
And lunch…
1:00pm: Found that G.Skill Titan SSD need to be pre-installed with USB connection…
1:30pm: Drove back home for my SATA-2-USB adaptor…
2:00pm: took off all 10 screws to switch the orginal hard drive….
2:30pm: G.Skill Titan SSD was recognized with USB connection…
Began to install OSX…
3:30pm: took off all 10 screws again to put SSD in…
4:00pm: OK……done…
4:10pm: count the time to boot (with SSD).. is..38s.
4:15pm: began test battery….
5:20pm: went home, the battery is 80%...

So, I did not do ‘real’ test. But here is my impression:
1. It is solid, like a brick, of course, I do not want it to become a brick 
2. The screen: colorful, nice, better than old version.
But, glossy is a REAL issue. If the screen is dark…it IS a mirror… through it… I can see the tiny number on my mug.
I would like to know how is the matte screen and consider to replace it with a matte one…

3. The battery life: With 9600M on, I set screen to around 80% bright. … I did not play game/movie …only surf internet and copy files and install applications… battery downs to 80% in 1 hour and 5 mins…So, it counts to around 5 hours 25 mins… not bad..
4. I do not like the keyboard…not because of the color…they are loose, especially the ‘space’ key…
OK..now… I will keep playing with it. :D

Nice subjective take on this.

Apples choice for these screens is....well, questionable perhaps.

The thing is-it's a trade off. there is a pronounced color degradation with the matte and a lighting problem with the glossy.

I don't know......I really don't

apples test was done with:

"2.66GHz Intel Core 2 Duo–based MacBook Pro (17-inch) units with a better Battery Life setting. The wireless productivity test measures battery life by wirelessly browsing various websites and editing text in a word processing document with display brightness set to 50%."

the 9600M was rated 7 hours. so with the screen a 80% brightness, down 20% in an hour.

seems decent right?

So does this mean that the matte version does not get the benefit of a 60% increase in color gamut that the glossy does?

Apple never said it was the same old screen...they said it has the same anti glare finish as the previous generation 17". So the new MacBook Pro has the same 60% increase in color gamut minus the glass with its gloss.

I hope that is the case. I'd prefer the matte version but don't want to have to sacrifice the color gamut increase.

This is what I've been wondering since day 1 of the 17" mbp's release.. Will the matte have the same % increase in gamut as the glossy screen?

I wouldnt be surprised if there is an article or a thread started about how the glossy has the increased % in the color gamut while the matte screen is the same as last gen's led screen.

Where did you get this information? No one has even compared the two screens yet.

Yeah, seriously. No one has received an anti glare version of this model yet.

Guys he meant generally in Glossy vs Matte. The 17" Notebook uses a generic notebook screen. It is well known that the diffusion that happens on the Matte screen (To rid it of Glare) causes the colours to appear less vibrant then if it were glossy. But the Glossy has the problem with the Glare.

If this is true... I will do a exchange...

Schiller's keynote: "As you know our notebook displays have this beautiful glossy finish on them — really helps get dark, dark blacks and great color contrast. But some of our highest-end customers would really rather not have a glossy panel on the front. So we've also created for the first time with the 17" an anti-glare option. See I told you there were a few of them; a few of them out there. And, really, the only way we could do this was to remove that glass in the front and then build a metal bezel around it to hold the display. So it has the same display properties for anti-glare as our last 17" notebook. But I am going to show the glossy version because that's my favorite."

That quote is from the keynote at 1 hour 9 minutes.

Hopefully some comparisons start to come out soon. I've been holding off getting one until I'm positive there will be a color gamut increase on the matte display. Thus far info seems open to interpretation.

no i think you'll find if you watch Shillers' Macworld Keynote, he says its the same matte screen as in the old MBP, do i really have to waste my time finding it for you?

No, but your wasting our time. Read two posts before yours and you'll see the exact quote from Shiller, and no he does not say it's the same screen.

1) dont be so rude, i was typing that at the same time as the other guy

2) he says it is, unless you have an eye problem... "So it has the same display properties for anti-glare as our last 17" notebook" means "So it has the same display properties for anti-glare as our last 17" notebook"

note the use of

THE SAME... not different but THE SAME

This is hilarious. Like religious zealots. No, the bible says this at 3:16! But it really means this!

The mattes and glossies are going to split like the catholics and protestants. I'm glad I'm non-denominational. I can live with either.

Sorry, but you posted 25 minutes after the other guy, and you we're being an smart ass.

Notice the phrase "properties for anti-glare". Try reading for comprehension.

Amen.

I hope I can live with the glossy. I ordered Anti glare first, then I changed it to glossy. I do music production so many people tell me it doesn't matter. But indeed it does since I will be staring at it for long periods of time just as anyone else. I'm really stuck on what to do but I figure if I get the glossy best bet would be to apply an anti glare film. I just hope those films work nicely. According to pika's photos they seem to do just fine.

Preceding the quote from Phil I posted earlier, he says this at the keynote:
"And this is the best display that we've ever shipped in a notebook. It's got a wide viewing angle, 140° x 120°, high contrast ratio, and displays the most amount of colors we've ever displayed on a notebook display; 60% greater color gamut than the previous 17" notebook display."

There's no question that whether you get the glass or the anti-glare you're getting the newer, better display.

Don't worry. Our literate members understood your previous post. ;)

Anyway, thanks for the find. I wouldn't have scoured the internetz to find a Schiller quote.
