Hi all, just got back from Macworld and got pics of the new 17", both glossy and matte. The matte version is indeed the same matte finish as the previous 17" MBP. It's not a glossy with an anti-glare coating, it's a plain matte screen with the same bezel as the Macbook Air.
I took pics of both the glossy and the matte side by side for comparison. The glossy adds a higher contrast to the screen but the matte has a more natural look. Notice how the Dock looks natural on the matte and too saturated on the glossy. Both screens were at maximum brightness. Sorry if the matte screen pics are a bit fuzzy.

Some grease marks over there. :)

Its really old school beautiful. Almost like an oversized Macbook Air.

Thanks for posting! What a great looking computer the matte screen version is! If they made that in a 15", I'd buy one in a heartbeat!

thank you for posting this HLdan. Finally, this should sort out the anti-glare is not matte crowd.

I still prefer the silver matte to the glossy black. I think it looks more stylish, but the speaker grill still doesn't look as good as the last gen MacBook Pros. Thanks for posting these :)

Thanks for making the effort HLdan!

Silver+Matte wins!

What I wonder is if the matte screen is actually the old panel in it's entirety and therefor doesn't have the 60% colourspace Gamut increase Phil Schiller so proudly introduced on the Unibody Glossy model......

i prefer the look of glossy. (i am a fan of shiny things) but eye strain is something I'd be concerned about in the long run.

i do like the flattness that the glass provides on the glossy.

for the 15" macbook pro, there's now a service that will take off the glossy glass and replace it with a regular grey bezel. (3rd party service of course)

thanks for the pics!

In R4, more or less
Thanks for posting. I presume the screens weren't calibrated, though, which appears to greatly favor the anti-glare screen. I'd prefer, by the way, a black bezel with an anti-glare screen.

For my money, TechRestore's service is not at all worthwhile.

Wait, so they took the glass OFF for the matte screen? Awesome!

Seems to me like the whole color issue has been fixed. Matte seems to deliver quite well. =)

Agree.

Love the silver verses black. Looks so much better.

Now, hopefully, Apple will provide this option for the MBP15.

It might look better or worse (anyone's valid opinion), but the utility of the black bezel is lower luminance in very low light conditions, in my experience.

Wait. Is that a shadow at the top of the maps pic? Did those dirty scoundrels inset the bezel from the edge of the case?

Don't know if it's just the camera(I haven't compared the 2 in person yet) but it does seem like the Matte has darker blacks while the Glossy looks more washed out? Anyone else see that?

I would like to see aluminum keys for the Matte version though or a Matte black bezel.

that black bezel around the outside of the screen looks really disgusting, but if they took that away it would be a beatiful machine, im not even sure why they left it there?

I agree, it looks like they removed something(which I guess they did) but it looks odd to me to have the gray and then the small black border. I can't say from pictures but I think I like the glossy border better...looks fresh'er.

exactly! i thought it was a bit of left over rubber around the edge :p its not attractive and it would look better with the glossy 17" border around the matte screen, that said i doubt anyone lucky enough to own one of these machines is going to be complaining about the rubber bezel :p

Awesome!
I find the new MBP amazing! I want one so bad!
I don't care if it's 17", the specs are godly for a laptop.
