Apple could've just kept the iPhone 5 in production. But they didn't. They decided to add an interesting twist.

If the 5C was the more expensive model, it would have been a complete failure. The 5s is right at the right price range, as is the 5c. To each their own, I suppose.

I did think the iPhone needed a colorful refresh. It's about as popular as it can be seeing as almost everyone has an iPhone already.

The 5c is less expensive for Apple to manufacture than the 5. Apple using it instead of just lowering the price of the 5 is purely for Apples benefit.

Unless you have a lot of money or nothing to spend it on I see no reason to buy a phone that is only $100 cheaper to use as a backup. They are pretty much the same price, and damn expensive by the way. For me it's either one or the other (hell, in my case I'm actually still using my iPhone 5 since it has the same internals as the 5S with a much better design IMHO).
My money went for the iPad Mini this time around :) we will see next year.

That's what I felt when I got it. I'm used to seeing the typical housing/coloring on an iPhone. I did not know about the release of the 5c, Honestly I'd never owned an iPhone before. So when that pretty blue caught my eye, I looked at my Optimus F7 and sighed.
Since I'm huge into modding Androids, I knew I'd get laughed at for choosing this phone. However, I like the phone enough that I just laugh along with them.

They can say what they want but if it attracted an Androidian like me, They must of done something right. =P

Goophone do a 5c look a like android phone... Show your friends that!

I'd be interested where you received this information.

http://press.ihs.com/press-release/...iar-design-and-pricing-strategy-iphone-5c-ihs

The low-end model of Apple’s iPhone 5c with 16 gigabytes (GB) of NAND flash memory carries a bill of materials (BOM) of $166, based on a physical dissection of the production. The cost rises to $173 when the $7 manufacturing expense is added in.

While this is considerably less than the $197 BOM and manufacturing cost for the original 16-GB iPhone 5...

Tried the 5c in the store, don't like it. The 5S is a superior phone in every single way. Buying a 5c for $549 instead of a 5s for $649 is about as brainless as buying an iPad 2 for $399 instead of an iPad Air for $499. Except the iPad example is even worse, the 5c is using year old tech, the iPad 2 is using much older tech.

Spending that extra $100 today will pay off tomorrow.

Resale value on the 5s in a year or more will most likely be more than $100 higher.

The "s" model will be more desirable in the used market than the "c'.

And that cost savings was passed over to us. An updated iPhone 5 for a lower price, you can't beat that.

Don't you mean the iPhone 5 has the same internals as the 5c with a better design?

Its amazing what adding the word unapologetically in front of plastic can do.

I think it was the word "Apple" that suddenly made people love plastic again to be honest. It's amazing how quickly people will change their minds when they see those 5 letters.

The plastic feels incredible, and it looks amazing. It looks better than 5S imho. They should dump the aluminium and go with plastic from now on for all models.

And this certainly is not the same kind of plastic on other plastic phones. I have never seen plastic looking like that.

It's a very special plastic. Magical and Revolutionary, it's made to hoodwink consumers all over the world. An impressive accomplishment :)

I wouldn't go that far. But it's a step above other plastics.

How so? Can you tell us the exact type of plastic it is......

Is it ...

1) Polyethylene Terephthalate
2) High-Density Polyethylene
3) Polyvinyl Chloride
4) Low-Density Polyethylene
5) Polypropylene
6) Polystyrene
7) Polylactide

What SPI code does it fall under?

What about it's chemical makeup makes it a " step above "?

If they had followed their normal device cycle, the iPhone 5 would have fit into the price bracket now occupied by the 5c. Those reductions in manufacturing costs are specifically to benefit Apples profit margin.

*edit* I just realized I was replying to someone who is banned. Whoops.

I only know it's polycarbonate which is used in scratch proof eye glasses, windshields on motorcycles, planes and even helicopters.

It's lacquered up, that's how it got the shiny finish though.

There was an uprising based on the fact that Apple decided to make a plastic phone.

Therefore, they condemn Apple, and damn the 5c. And that's fine, I'm just saying that Apple at least tried to make the 5c innovative by using a special hardcoded plastic that no other phone has.

Of course sales will tell and of course you have the 5s so people are going to buy what they want.

For the record though, people don't like plastic. Ever since the iPhone 4 came out.

Iphone 5c is the nicest most premium feeling phone build I've ever owned. It's going to take some huge software improvement to get me to go back to cold metal and a phone that scratches and chips as easy as the 5 did.

I hope I'm not ruffling too many feathers with my opinion but here goes...

It's not the plastic they hate. It's the change. Apple has crammed it into their consumers that plastic was inferior. Every commercial showing a phone with plastic as being inferior. Even if they didn't agree, it was forced into their minds again and again. Now Apple has changed face, possibly realizing the missed potential to hit a market that's been untouched (or not touched in a long time). So they are bashing the product as they've been shown to do.

I think it'll take a few more releases of this c line before it will become an "Apple Standard" again. I'm just wondering if they'll stick by their change or renig back into the old ways. Personally? I like that it's plastic.

Thanks.
That's a bit surprising to me. I honestly didn't think there was much, if any savings vs the iP5.

I'm sure Apple refined the manufacturing processes to reduce the cost, but the bulk of the savings most likely comes from using a plastic enclosure over the aluminum. A chunk of molded plastic, even nice plastic like Apple is using, is going to be less expensive than a chunk of milled and finished aluminum.
