Assuming this hasn't already been patched long ago by one of the many iOS security updates and/or in the newer A789 chips and secure enclaves developed after the A6 in the 5c.

I believe it's a physical manipulation of the circuitry. Not really something that Apple can address through software or stronger encryption.
I was thinking — why can't they just clone the memory chips giving them an unlimited number of attempts?
We don't actually know it was unlocked, only that they claim to have retrieved the data. There are other ways to do that than just by figuring out or brute forcing the passcode.
I hope all they found were selfies and dick pics. Would make this all for nothing.

Basically it's a disinformation exercise now.

Huh? There are hackers testing every security flaw in any infrastructure. All technology = unsecure.

It was without doubt a physical hack. Nothing to do with softwar. Decapped chips and taking the data of bit by bit require geniuses. Not something that could be done by anyone outside a lab and even then a chance it could screw up.
I don't think this is a "security hole" they used.

Apple will move the delay between passcode attempts from iOS into the secure enclave of the chip. People who want an unhackable phone will have to buy a new iPhone.
It's now time for Apple to put up or shut up on the matter of digital security. They need to make their encryption single-user destructible or admit that what Cellebrite did was trivially easy and their digital security is in fact so much PR rubbish. As much as I would love to see them do it, I have very real doubts about them doing so.
If any evidence or leads they get off that device ever goes to a non-FISA or pubic court they are going to have to disclose how they did it otherwise all the lawyers have to do claim is the FBI simply fabricated any and all there evidence.
