Why not sell it himself at a better rate, to compete with the industry and piracy, on SD Cards or something. $200 for an album on a device that has nothing else going for it makes no sense.
the device is actually pretty cool if you checked what it actually does, but I guess people start hating whenever they hear his name so that's understandable

"time to free music from this oppressive system."

So...require buyers to buy a $200 device? That sounds pretty oppressive too.

He's talented. But f'ed in the head.

Oppression is always defined by the perspective of the speaker — in this case, he is referring to the oppression of artists by labels. You as a customer have options, as an artist that isn't the case as labels also control all avenues of album releases while collecting a king's ransom from all money raised. he knows he is losing money doing this, but holds on to much more revenue. He can afford to experiment with the model, he's one of the few who is able to.

It's a win-win for him either way — eventually, it will be on all streaming services but we know (just like movies) the first few weeks/months are usually the most revenue-generating, so his fans (and those who do want it on release) will pay, at least to support the artist as a fan, and he will hold on to the majority of that revenue during that high-generating period. Those who don't want the device, or to pay that much, will just wait till it inevitably hits all streaming services — at which point he still generates income, gains prolonged media buzz, and can even adapt the track sequence, as he is known to do. Even if the buyers of the device get upset that it eventually comes out on their already subscribed services, he can just make them happy by adding additional content onto the device after the fact, creating an ITK fan set to test stuff out on.

His head is fine in this regard, he is a savvy artist, with a head for business.

For all the haters here’s some actual numbers.
1.3mil in profit in 24 hours is probably better than what any streaming service would have given

WTF??? Apple, are you serious???? I will quit Apple One because of that.
Kanye West is by far the greatest person in the world.

I will switch to Huawei or Xonami or whatever.
And you STILL won't have his "music". But you do you...

Oh, and what are you blaming Apple for? They had nothing to do with it!

Sort of like the oppression of developers by the Apple App Store then, right? 30% ransom while you are forced to sell your wares there.

I haven't been into Kanye's music for a while now, but this weird little gadget actually seems awesome for nerds who are into music in any way. I'm tempted to buy one just to play around with.

The irony is that he would make more money taking that 12% from streaming than he will *not* selling this smoke detector that plays music.

I did but what I don't understand what does it do that a software can't do for lower cost if someone really care about the music editing. Also, the device is only for his album as far as I understand.

Later Ye! Dont let the door hit you.

It's sad. Used to like some of his music. Then he got on Twitter. Now whenever he says anything public, I just know I'm probably going to feel embarrassed for him while I laugh.

Edit: I do have to admit the idea of this device is kinda cool. Won't last. But it's kinda cool. But Imo, anyone that wants that functionality probably already has software that does a ton more, granted not while mobile. This is sort of a portable EQ. I think most casual listeners, if they want to make any alterations to sound, will probably just used baked in OS EQs, or get an app for their wants.

What a business plan -- sell music to only musicians.

Not even close — most artists only get between 11-16% of their revenue, whereas developers get 70%, and only for the first 12 months, then apple's cut drops to 15%. If developers feel oppressed by the App store they can then do the equivalent of what Kanye is doing and sell it as a Web App — making device, platform, and market irrelevant to the delivery — create their own log-in and pay system, as he did.

Not sure why you brought that up, but it seems you are trying to connect an off-topic agenda. Devs are living it up compared to musicians.
