The idea of being able to modify a commercial album as if you had the multitracks actually is legitimately cool. It reminds me of the idea behind that one Todd Rundgren album on the CD-i. That said, it’s an idea that hasn’t been done well yet. So I think this Stem Player is an idea that could be something other than hot garbage (but it’s easy and fashionable to hate on Kanye West, and I admit that having his name on the idea dampens my enthusiasm for it). If this album is a concept album that depends on the interactivity the Stem Player affords for its concept, then it makes perfect sense not to release it on conventional streaming services (which never could live up to the artistic vision of the concept). And mainstream music could use a return of the concept album, if just to mix things up a little bit.
Yeah, yeah, since it’s fashionable to hate on Kanye, I know I’ll get some ribbing for using “artistic vision” and a new Kanye West album in the same sentence. If it were anyone else doing this, it might be taken more seriously. I’m definitely not a fan of Kanye (and certainly won’t be buying this player/album), but I really don’t think it’s an awful idea on its face. It really depends on the execution and how many albums get released that take advantage of this player’s features.
