I faced this very dilemma a couple days ago..
I upgraded from an ipad 2 wifi - that I found challenging to find use for.

I upgraded to an LTE 32 Ipad Air and haven't been able to put it down.
In addition to eReader, web browser, mobile games.. I added in, internet anywhere with the LTE. That also, enabled incar operation - things like, navigation, Siri, iTunes, Web browsing, YouTube, email and Videos.. Just think, the new tesla model S.

In addition to that, I picked up a lightning to VGA adapter. This will enable 2 things, presentations for work via keynote & connections to TVs to project media from my iPad. This is especially useful for travel.

The extra 32 gigs enabled me to load up on media (several Movies, TV shows, Music & pics).. All that for an extra $100 bucks.

So far, I'm happy.. I like how the iPad organizes the media.

gl, you have a high class problem my friend.. :)

Kathy, does it transfer ios apps/games to the drive or just media like music, movies & pics?
One reviewer wrote: "This device essentially provides users the best of cloud speed with the dependability of having the data physically on hand. Perhaps the best thing about the device is it works across platforms (iOS, Android, and Windows). To have a device that gets pictures, movies, documents, and pdfs to all is extremely convenient. To do it with flash architecture and a speedy built in wifi network is even better. To provide all this with a well regarded brand name for $50 to $60 is unbelievable. Sandisk Connect does it reliably and well. The free app through iOS and Android is a standout and very intuitive for most tech users." The only negatives are: "loading an HD movie on the thumb drive is painfully slow over USB 2.0. Second, the file size limit for transferring to the device is 3.99 gb or less (more than any full length movie in HD)."

I have both mini and iPad air I have a 128gb air, so that it takes care of all my storage issues. The mini is a greta form , but does not feel that much different to my air. Yes it is smaller, but I carry a large rucksack. So storage and carrying is null and void for me at least.

I have only ever purchased 32gb iPads in the past without an issue. However, I am bumping against the limits with my soon-to-be-returned Mini Retina, so I am considering the 64gb when I re-purchase the Air in a few days.

I vote for the 64gb, if money is not a factor. I know that I am weighing the issue very carefully before I make my next iPad purchase.

I ultimately decided to upgrade to the 64GB Air vs getting the 128GB Ipad mini with retina display. One of the big reasons was I already bought a case for the ipad ( on amazon) and I prefer the bigger size screen and while I would love the 128GB space (on the Air) I don't think $799 is worth paying for the ipad since I would be paying $799 + $34 for the Case/Sleeve / $130 for the Squaretrade warranty which means I could just buy a MacBook air for a few more dollars. I installed a lot of apps (games) and all the music in my library and had about 7GB left on my 32GB ipad so I figured to get the 64GB (probably realistically keep around 30GB on my ipad and float the rest for movies when I am away ). I also got a $15 dollar BestBuy Gift card since I did it today and used it to buy myself a $50 dollar iTunes card which is also on sale for $42 so I got it for $27 dollars :)

It seems to me that those who need large amounts storage have quite a bit of video and or other specialty files that take up lots of space. Music and photos aren't that bad unless you really, really have a crapload if them. Plus, with a little management you ought to be able to remove things you aren't using and cycle things in and out. You can and should do that for apps too, IMO.

I was going to go with the 64gb this time but instead went with 32GB and got cellular support with it for about the same money. Glad I did at this point. I don't store videos on my iPad though.

I have about a dozen or 2 movies through the Blu-ray copies I been buying or DVD's from years ago and while I probably will rotate them anyways I loaded 2 movies at 3GB a piece 5 Albums and 4 huge games and bunch of trivial apps ranging from a few megabytes to 200 MB's and I only have about 7GB of space left and I figured after me deciding to keep my ipad for a few years I was probably safe in the 64

The exchange(s) all happened in a week, therefore my point stands.

They allow exchanges for a reason, because people change their minds.

I'm still trying to decide on exchanging my 32GB retina Mini for the 64GB. They have them in stock at my preferred Apple store this morning and I have the cash.

It's my money, I have the right to buy what I want even to change my mind and do an exchange while I am within the two week exchange period.

Because I can? I wasn't 100% sure which is good for me since A) I am using a Samsung Galaxy s4 with a 64gb micro sd card and I put everything on that and this is my first ios device since my iPhone 4. B) I knew I could spend the difference and exchange it at bestbuy with no restocking fees (wasn't sure about multiple times)..

All that being said I returned it a in because this time there was dust under the screen and that one has it (this time I am going to the apple store)

27gb is such small space for apps and movies from my brief experience

I do have iTunes Match and that along with iTunes Radio makes the "other" space on the iPad fill up beyond belief. It was up to 10GB of space a few days ago. I end up turning off iTunes Match and the other space stays low until I turn it on again.

I exchanged my 32GB Air for a 64GB Air, I too had about 10GB of "other", which I believe is crazy, so I went bigger

How are u guys able to just keep changing or bringing back iPads,it doesn't seem rite, apple must be loosing a fortune on returns.
U just can't do that in other country's.

It's pretty much the standard for any store. You can return or exchange just about anything except opened software. It's the reason why people in the image retention thread can exchange iPad after iPad. It is allowed.

It just doesn't seem rite to me,yes if there's an issue it should be changed but not because u decide u want a larger gb.

It's allowed and not frowned upon and as long as I'm willing to pay the difference in cost, I can do it.

I bought a new car last summer and signed a paper stating i could return the car for any reason within three days as long as kept the mileage under a certain amount and a few other minor details.

Idk about the apple store but bestbuy will just sell it as open box (if it wasn't returned for defects like me upgrading to bigger capacity)... Plus apple is notorious for having dust under the screen. I have owned 3 apple products which is the iPhone 3gs, iPhone 4 and my iPad air and my iPhone 4 was impervious and no dust under the screen. I literally dropped my 4 on concrete about 6 feet multiple times face first and never broke the screen

Lose a lot of resale value (in percentage) going to higher storage capacities. If you don't absolutely need 64GB, I'd stick with 32.
This is a HUGE old of bullpucky! I've always owned 64GB iPhones and iPads since they've become available. It's the BEST deal in iOS when you consider price per GB. No one should EVER buy an electronic device as an investment or what kind of return they'll get when it's time to sell. That's silly. Buy what you need. When you need it. If you buy too small or too large, bring it back and get the size you need. Most retailers are very accommodating. That said, I sold my original iPad mini 64GB AT&T model yesterday on craigslist for $510 (asking $525---bought a year earlier for $560 w/AT&T's $100 off campaign. They gave me a new rMini and just pushed the contract to that iPad and 'freed' the older iPad from my contract. Check eBay listings 'completed' to get an idea of resale. Spoiler!!! More GBs=More $ on resale

I don't have an Air to compare it to but to me, the colors are very bright and doesn't look washed out at all. I've seen pictures of the Mini and the air side by side showing the same content and I didn't see much of a difference.

I seriously love this thing. I gave away my Nexus 7!

I'm with ya, 100%. I've got an Air and rMini. The 28% decrease in color gamut is hardly noticeable to an untrained eye. The resolution and form factor, battery life and wealth of ready to go apps available make the mini a home run...not to mention the A7 processing now ubiquitous across the iOS lineup. No need to trade power for price, size or tab vs phone. They're ALL atop the Performance heap in benchmarking for CPU and GPU power...as well as speedy I/O. This alone, moving forward for developers will be a major positive

Cant afford 128gb ipad and that is overkill for me

Again...it's the best deal per GB and if you shop around a bit, you can buy the 128 @ AT&T for a hundred bucks off, just $30 more than the 64. High Rez photos, high def video, games kicking the 2-3GB barrier....these guys fill up quick! IF you can pull it off....or check the sales, refurb/clearance at Apple.com you should be able to find what you're looking for at a decent price. IMO these days...32GB is as small as you should purchase if you plan to use the App Store. If you're going stock (my mom) and have little interest in apps, 16 is fine. IF though you're planning to take pics, manipulating video, download magazines, music and movies/TV shows, look very hard at the 64/128 models. I can't tell you the freedom afforded by 128GB of space!

As I have stated I am an avid Android user for a while last ios device I owned was an iPhone 4 ) and owned Samsung devices which all use micro SD cards so I always bought the smallest internal memory and bought SD cards. I am new to this internal memory only again and thus I am kind of asking

Don't worry. There are some real clowns here. Notice his was the only derogatory reply amongst almost 50 now. I, too, am an Android fan. I'm brand agnostic but prefer iOS to Android---or at least did until I bought my Note3 with 4.3. It's come a LONG way since I've bought my first Galaxy phone and Xoom tab (still have it and it's still doing its job:))
That said...and as you already know, the SD card option Samsung affords us as customers is really ONLY good for media. Pics. Movies. Books. Mags. It's next to impossible to load apps on it (not really too smart either)--but Google/Android are trying to nix the SD option throughout the industry. Samsung isn't listening. With iOS you've got much larger storage options built in to choose from at purchase. iCloud and iTunes Match are excellent ways to store your media and stream when you want it. Dropbox, Box, Google Drive....there's a ton of iOS 'cloud' storage options if you're so inclined

It seems to me that those who need large amounts storage have quite a bit of video and or other specialty files that take up lots of space. That's key. No videos and you're gold! ....or are you? Leonardo DaVinci's book is 2GB. I've had Mac Format mags as large as 800mb. Newer games, Asphalt 7/8 Infinity Blade III, Ultima, Baldur's Gate, Final Fantasy, Order and Chaos...most are @ least a GB (& their advertising 476MB when you install)---> up to and exceeding Apple's imposed 2GB limit. Shooting 1080p video at the bitrate iOS uses chews up approximately 10GB/hour. HDR snaps double themselves by default though you can shut that off...if you don't though you're talking almost 20MB per shot with both the JPEG and the HDR shots saved! Gets large fast

It actually is 69% of the color gamut and it is noticeable. I have no clue why apple did that when the nexus 7 has 100% just like the iPad Air. I really want the rMini but the color was the only drawback. I'm a graphic designer and I need the full color gamut.

A graphic designer eh? That's exactly how my wife and I pay our mortgage. She runs the graphics end...me, the audio/video production end. As mentioned earlier...I've got both the Air and rMini...as well as 4x iPad 4s (mobile entertainment). For the life of me I'm having a hard time figuring out the hindrance you're having with the mini not meeting Adobe's RGB standard...off by 30%? You SURELY aren't doing your design on the mini, are you? If it's to show off your work when done....truth told, I'd bet one of one hundred clients have 'the eye' to spot the color characteristics or 'lack of' on a mini once you've used inDesign on your rMBP to put it together. Am I right? ;)
Don't mean to be a dick...but as others have said, this color gamut thing is ridiculous....especially considering the HDX from Kindle is the best of the bunch! Why aren't you rockin' a Kindle to show drafts to clients?

How are u guys able to just keep changing or bringing back iPads,it doesn't seem rite, apple must be loosing a fortune on returns.
U just can't do that in other country's.

In spite of your country of origin...Apple will happily switch you out if A) you received a broken unit (bad pixels, bad display, bad hardware or even cosmetic imperfections likely to be noticed by no one but yourself. 1-800-MYAPPLE. Apple's post purchase support is second to none. They actually WANT you to get what YOU want. They lose nothing on the exchange. The iPad already has almost a 40% margin built in and I guarantee the noise you hear on this board from the dozen or so folks that continuously exchange to find the 'perfect' iPad....there are millions to those dozens that go about using their stock iPad, enjoy the colors, speed, app selection and power in an 11oz tablet. Not once considering a small nick, pink/yellow/purple tint etc. someone mentioned the other day in the IR test thread for grins he was going to do the test on his iPad 2. Yep. IR. Dissipated very quick, as it does on today's IPS displays using LG's technology. Keep in mind, we are in the infancy of HiDPI displays and SOCs THIS powerful. Five years from now, most 'non' tech types....IOW, 90%+ of our population will need nothing more than an iPad, Nexus, or slate from another OEM as their primary, possibly ONLY computer.
Times are a changing and the more storage you can afford the better! Don't fret resale. If anything, since 2007...iOS devices have proven time and time again how much value they retain on the second hand market. Keep your box and paperwork and in two years you'll get at least 50% back. That's NOT an investment but it IS peace of mind. :)

Of course you shouldn't buy purely for an investment, but if you're planning to upgrade at some point it's prudent to think about the future if you can't afford to throw money down the drain. Sure, you get better price/GB with higher capacities - of course you do (albeit at a ridiculous markup). But when it comes to resale, you don't get the $100 you paid for 32GB more storage back; usually, you get like $30 more, hence a lower resale percentage. 16GB models always hold their percentage value best.

If you know you don't need 64GB but buy it anyway, then you're literally just wasting money. It'd be nice to have more space (I'm not suggesting 16GB is perfect for everyone - my Air is 32GB), but at the end of the day I'm not keeping this thing forever.

I think you may have missed my point entirely. In no way, shape or form did I suggest buying 'more than you need', just because. Point was space is a premium in the iOS world, especially someone transitioning from a life of external side load SD card options...up to and including 64GB the OP mentions he was using on his/her last Android device they're transitioning from. As far as ridiculous markup, in no way should you be complaining the NAND or eMMC storage on Android and iOS devices to a SanDisk 16GB class IV card. Look more at the professional CF cards for a better idea...or even Google NAND or mobile device storage systems and 'costs per thousand lot'. They're not $5 for 16GB. They're not $10 for 32---nor $15 for $64. If we were using standard SD card memory...we'd see a LOT more Iphone returns because of their storage. Not batteries, screens, home and power buttons, etc. $30 more? Seriously? K. Let's do a little research. eBay. Right now. Completed auctions for original mini
16-$255-$275 (with bids and a 'sale'). Brand new one, sealed went for $327 back on October 2nd
32GB-$353-$390 (again, with bids and closed sale)
64GB-$465 (12/18) and $525 on 11/30
Hmm. Interesting. And without retina. With A5 proc. used. And by my calculations they EACH maintain at LEAST the $100 premium shelled out in the beginning. Gotta run or I'd prove you wrong with iPhones too

I forgot the 2nd main reason why I moved on to Android phones is and that is I don't have to deal with the exchange game to get a perfect screen... After I returned my 16gb and 32GB ipad's I now have returned 2 more because they had dust under the screen and my new one does to and I am fed up going to bestbuy to return these things lol. I am just going to deal with it because I already went through 5 ipad's in a period of a week ( in hindsight I would of chose to keep the first 64gb ipad air since that dust was the smallest of them all)

From my personal experience I have had nothing then issues with my first ios Devices which includes my iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4 and the Ipad air. the 3GS had dust under the screen , my IPhone 4 ( bought on first day of pre-order) the speaker died though the replacement one was perfect and survived naked falls on concrete :) , and my ipad air having dust under the screen.

Did they stop gluing the Digitizer to the glass screen again ?

You must be on some special ebay then. :D I see lots of sold 64GB's for under $300, a paltry $60 up from 16GB's.

$100 (already ridiculously overpriced) add-on not losing any value on used market?! Lol.

I have never had to exchange anything on iOS because of a bad screen. I've had every iPhone and two iPads. I had had a few MacBook Pros, two MacBooks and even and Apple Cinema Display. Not one of them had a bad display.

People on this site invent problems. All you have to do is read through the image retention thread to see that.

Back to exchanging the iPad due to wanting bigger storage space. I've decided to get the 128GB Verizon in the morning. I am so excited about this! I will still use it on T-Mobile. Just getting the Verizon just because it can be activated anytime on Verizon for when and if I do sell it.
