I think you may have missed my point entirely. In no way, shape or form did I suggest buying 'more than you need', just because. Point was space is a premium in the iOS world, especially someone transitioning from a life of external side load SD card options...up to and including 64GB the OP mentions he was using on his/her last Android device they're transitioning from. As far as ridiculous markup, in no way should you be complaining the NAND or eMMC storage on Android and iOS devices to a SanDisk 16GB class IV card. Look more at the professional CF cards for a better idea...or even Google NAND or mobile device storage systems and 'costs per thousand lot'. They're not $5 for 16GB. They're not $10 for 32---nor $15 for $64. If we were using standard SD card memory...we'd see a LOT more Iphone returns because of their storage. Not batteries, screens, home and power buttons, etc. $30 more? Seriously? K. Let's do a little research. eBay. Right now. Completed auctions for original mini
16-$255-$275 (with bids and a 'sale'). Brand new one, sealed went for $327 back on October 2nd
32GB-$353-$390 (again, with bids and closed sale)
64GB-$465 (12/18) and $525 on 11/30
Hmm. Interesting. And without retina. With A5 proc. used. And by my calculations they EACH maintain at LEAST the $100 premium shelled out in the beginning. Gotta run or I'd prove you wrong with iPhones too
Yes, they should consider their needs, so you shouldn't buy 32GB if you need 64GB - but to say the markup isn't ridiculous, is, well, ridiculous in itself. Take the 5s:
It costs Apple $9.40 to upgrade from 16GB to 32GB, and a mere $10.20 to upgrade from 32 to 64GB - while the consumer is paying $100 per upgrade. That's almost a 1,000% markup on storage. Apple is screwing almost everyone with their storage costs, but if you need more storage you have no other choice.
I've looked on eBay, and I can't find anywhere near the prices you mention for a used item. Let's take an iPhone 5, an item many people are now selling as they upgrade to the 5s. Both models are used with minor scratches, black and slate and are unlocked to any network.
16GB - £345 (
here)
64GB - £360 (
here)
That's a £15 difference for something you would've paid £170 for a year ago.
I may have chosen these specific examples, and of course there are anomalies, however looking at around 20 16GB vs 64GB on ebay.co.uk, the vast, vast majority only go for £15-40 more. That's a tiny percentage of what you paid originally.
I'm not saying Apple products don't hold their value - they do, much more than any other company's products. However, just as it it with configuring a higher end Mac, the more you pay at the beginning, the more you generally lose when it comes to resale.
