Hey everyone. I just got a 256 gig 8 plus (ive been using the bigger phones for the past few years) and while i love wireless charging and the better cameras and processor, i got to admit it is still a very borning phone.

Ive been debating getting the 10 for a while now. on the one hand im glad they redesignd it and went OLED but on the other hand, im still not crazy about that notch and face id seems to be slower in some situations.

internally i know i got a better battery and the same processor...so in theory with the exception of face id features everything should work the same across both phones..

what are your guys thoughts...stick with the 8plus and wait for a plus version of the x next year or go for broke lol...

I'd go for the X now or if you want something a little more economically feasible for the time being, 7 Plus. You don't even notice the notch when using and Face ID works great. If you don't use landscape, no reason for the Plus size.

The OP already has an 8 Plus...switching to a 7 Plus would be a downgrade.

If you’re bored of the 8 Plus you should definitely check out the X. Since you’re used to using bigger phones though, you’ll want to check one out in-person first so you can get a feel for the size of the X. Though the diagonal measurement of the display is bigger, the display looks and feels smaller. It’s easy to adjust to but just as a heads up, it’s not really bigger than the 8 Plus.

As far as the notch, you will not care about it after you actually own the phone. The only people making a big deal about it are people who don’t have it.

For some, maybe. Just think it's still a good option. You miss out on wireless charging, but that's really it. You can find a 7 Plus for cheap right now.
It’s a good option if coming from a 6 Plus. OP said they like the wireless charging, better camera, and better processor of the 8 Plus so the 7 Plus is not really an option.

It does.

Though the X still runs the same OS, it’s still a new experience.

I have an X. I'm on my third day with it. Yeah, there's a new way to get around but it's the same iOS. Calling it a new experience is a stretch but like DNichter said, easily the best iPhone available.

Make sure you're buying with the right expectations is all I'm saying.

I love the gestures. I get your point as ultimately most of what you will be doing will reside in your apps, I do feel that the screen going to all four corners coupled with the new gestures and 120hz touch input does make for a new experience. I mean, it's the biggest change to the iPhone since 2007 so I feel like I have to call it a new experience.

Hardware-wise, I'll agree to an extent. You can change the layout of a hardware keyboard but the interaction with the software is going to be the same. You can relocate a power button but it still does the same thing. That's the type of novelty that wears off quickly.

iOS remains iOS, though. From my experience here, that's generally what people are "bored with" when they come here to vent.

The camera on the 8 plus, especially the slow-sync flash, is OBVIOUSLY superior to the 7 plus. Then there’s the wide color gamut display, which makes photos look far more vivid. If the OP cares about photography, this would totally be a downgrade.

I’d rather create a way to make the money for the price difference, than settle for an inferior experience.

Fair enough, I get it. People are always going to be looking towards the next best thing.

I don't see it as inferior, but that's just me. I saw comparison photos between the 7 Plus, 8 Plus, and even the X. Not a huge noticeable difference to me. Still great pictures all around, just not a selling point for me. I'm just happy to get Plus-like photos in a smaller package (X).

I compared shots with my X (which has pretty much the same camera as the 8 Plus) before trading-in my 7 plus to Apple (under IUP). I found the differences to be stark, especially in low light and using a flash. But for me, the camera is one of the prime features of the iPhone. So, to each his own.

Absolutely, whatever works for the individual. I think I just don't have the eye for such things.

I have two lines of service and own both the 8 Plus and the X. I can tell you the phone I always reach for is the X. I only pick up the 8 Plus to update apps and clear notifications occasionally. The notch is a non-issue for most once they get the phone in their hands. I can’t really comment on battery life because I’m mostly at home, in the car, or at the office and it’s always plugged in or on a charging pad. But the X is a great phone. It feels thoroughly modern, in both design and technology. I don’t miss the additional width of the Plus phones (my primary device has been a Plus since the release of the 6).

im returning mine tomorrow morning for an 8 plus....im just not a fan of the smaller phone size anymore...
after 2 weeks still not used to it...when i first went from a 6 to 6+ i was used to it within 2days...if after 2 weeks im still not used to it and not a fan - why should i keep it.ill wait till next year and hope there is a plus size X

I feel the same way. I do like the iPhone X, but it just feels slightly small to me, when I prefer a larger iPhone similarly to the Plus. Next year, there is undoubtedly a 6.5 iPhone X coming.

I just received my X two days ago, coming from an LG V20 that I had since February, and an iPhone 6S+ before that. I have larger hands and have not really had an issue with large phones (my first being a Note 2).

This time I wanted to go back to an iPhone (also wanted to go back to Apple Watch since Android Wear for me has been one huge disappointment). I really expected/hoped the X to be a decked out Plus, and to be frank was a little disappointed in its size. I could not bring myself to buy an 8+ with its bezels from an era that is ending, so it was an X or no iPhone at all. I went for the X.

So far I love the X. In a way it feels like my very first iPhone that I bought at launch, in 2007 (or even the iPhone 4 from 2010, another that I remember fondly). But, I have lost screen-estate compared to my prior phones, there is no getting around that. Beyond that there is perception: I see the small phone and immediately "think" small. It's not just me. When I have shown off my X most people seem surprised it is as small as it is. I then show them how the actual display area matches up to the their phone, by holding them side by side by display area, and they are usually impressed.

After putting a case on my X it of course feels larger. BUT, I actually like that on this phone. With my larger phones adding a case was about trying to find the smallest case possible, to not make the beast any bigger than necessary. Even in its case my X is easy to slip into my jeans' pocket, which was doable before but sometimes a bit tight. I have to say, while the X is gorgeous naked, I don't mind putting this phone in a case (in my case a clear case).

FaceID has worked great, better than I expected. "Great" might not be the right term as I hardly know it is there, it just does its thing on its own. But I don't miss TouchID that is for sure. I particularly like how FaceID causes lockscreen notifications to display full information when it is me, and only me, looking at the screen.

All that said, if an X Plus comes out next year, I will be all over it! But I doubt I will regret the year head start I had with the original X.

The X is a great phone. My favorite feature is the gesture control, and the FaceID was growing on me. I'm in the eye-strain/headache camp so i actually am returning my X to get the 8+. However you do you :)
The Plus for me has a Much better battery life, and I like landscape video viewing vs the X where you have to zoom in for full screen (and get notch, yuck)
The X is a beautiful phone, but it still seems like a Version 1.0 with bugs and not all apps are updated to support the screen. Find some free time if you can and play with the X at the store for 15-30minutes. Then play with the 8+, and back to X. See how you feel

I will just put it this way. If you use your 8 Plus for a lot of video, keep it. Right now video viewing is a downgrade. I would wait for the X Plus. I am because I tried out the X and returned it for the video size.

FWIW, here’s my experience. I purchased an 8 Plus shortly after it was released. From what I had read about the X, I wasn’t convinced the narrower screen would be for me. I also had reservations about the battery life, and the concept of a notch being in the way - particularly in landscape led me to select the 8 Plus. I also was not sold on the idea of FaceID.

The 8 Plus is a good phone. Great battery life, decent cameras, the display an improvement over previous versions. I stopped into the local store to see the X, and I immediately doubted going for the 8 Plus. I was able to get an X easily - lucky, meant to be, who knows.

My first day with the X, I expected to return it. The smaller size made my hands cramp, the battery life seemed a step backward. The notch, for me was surprisingly a non-issue: I didn’t find it awkward as expected. The narrow aspect ratio was a big concern. All considered using the phone was a pleasure. More so than the 8 Plus. The OLED display, at first seemed marginally better, but the more I used the X, the more the difference became apparent to me. After two days, picking up the 8 Plus seemed like a huge step back. FaceID has worked exceedingly well for me. My experience has been it functions like it’s not even there: letting me into my phone, keeping everyone else out. Really like the way notification previews are not displayed until my X “sees” me, then like magic a preview shows up before I swipe up.

In the end, I sold the month old 8 Plus and decided to keep the X. Both are great phones, but the X just feels better overall in so many little ways that added up to make the choice clear for me.

I guess I would suggest if you can try both, and then decide what’s best for you. I was able to easily sell the 8 Plus (I had purchased it through a carrier upgrade, so when I resold it, I was able to recover basically all I had spent on it. Had I bought the 8 Plus outright and not been able to recover the full cost, that may have impacted my decision.)

I am super happy with the X. After a week or so of use (iOS and app updates in that time) the battery life is not as good as the 8 Plus, but much better than the first few days. The only things about the X that annoy me now: unoptimized apps, and that it scratches up so easily. I take good enough care of my phone, looks great, but I saw a friend’s and the stainless steel band on his looks mighty scratched up after a week of ownership.

My two cents. Good luck with your decision!

I get it, it's ultimately his choice. Just giving my opinion. In that case OP, go for the X. Easily the best iPhone made.

But is it worth it when you already have an 8+?

As an 8+ owner, I would say no. What it boils down to for me is that the X doesn't actually do anything that the 8+ doesn't except FaceID and animojis, and I'm not particularly impressed by either of those features.

I bought an 8 Plus on release and loved it. I sold it and bought a X and love it even more.

If you can do it, I'd get the X. But, it all depends on what you want. A good friend of mine also bought the 8 Plus at the same time as me, and wanted the X, but he found the X too small for him, so he's sticking with the 8 Plus for now.

For me, the X checks off every box.
