Only been 48 hours with my X. First off, the "notch" (which I admit I HATED since I first saw the leaks in June, the keynote...etc etc) is actually a non-issue, I simply forget it's there.
Face ID does work for the most part...so far about a 99% rate, Even in the dark it has no problems. There have been a handful of times so far it won't read my face randomly for some reason. If I click the side button to turn off display, turn back on then it reads it.
It is a beautiful phone, display is very sharp. Putting it side by side with the 8+, you notice the difference. Little thing like the new dynamic wallpaper - bokeh colors that constantly animate and moves on the home screen looks pretty slick. (I personally like the dynamic wallpaper, always wish Apple updated this, different effects other than for the X)
Animojis..yeah I tried it. It's cool...but as I expected that can get old real fast.
My 4, 6 year old nephews may love this.
Apps that have NOT upgraded to the X display, really makes a difference as they appear much smaller on the screen, some of them look almost iPhone 4, 5 size to me. NOT an iPhone X problem, that's the developers not getting their act together yet. The apps that have been upgraded for the display look really nice!
No home button, no problem. I didn't even bother with the "virtual home button" trick. I actually like the swiping, the gestures with the phone. This may be my favorite feature on the phone. The swiping seems flawless and fluid. Few times in the first few hours by habit I kept moving my thumb to the home button...that isn't there, I expected that. I did see that some of the gestures will be enhanced, improved on 11.2(?) Including a quick swipe from bottom left for app switcher. That would be a great improvement.
Basically everything you see in reviews here, YouTube, etc, I agree with.
The issue - and this is just due to MY own user experience - after owning the 6+ since 2014, the 8+ since September, 3 years of the larger iPhone, I'm simply just not used to the smaller size of the phone itself. Again, that's just me. BUT, it does feel great in my jeans pocket again (lol)..something I haven't had since iPhone 5. And yes it does feel good in my hand..if you are one that hates to walk around with a "naked phone" and need a case like myself, having a case with grip..and if you're careful, you're far less likely to drop it.
I think those who have owned the smaller iPhones...the 6, 6s, 7...this X would feel PERFECT!
I am slightly missing landscape mode on the home screen...yeah that's pretty small and petty.
Keyboard size may be the biggest issue I would have to overcome. The keys are smaller and almost squished together I feel, especially in vertical mode. (again it was mentioned on the forum, that large "dead space" at the bottom of the keyboard..yeah something needs to be done with this! Maybe it will..there has to be a reason why there is so much bank gray.) LITTLE better typing a text, email in landscape mode. What can I say, I have fat fingers.
Another issue I am running into is the phone does feel warmer compared to the 8+ using certain apps that have heavier graphics. Not sure if this is just me or what? Maps, messing around with YouTube. Taking video/photos the phone can feel a little warmer than I'm used to. This is something I haven't experienced with the 8+ in two months.
Photos/Video. Both take great footage. Daytime, even dawn/dusk shots look nice. No real news here, dark nighttime shots..eh. I'm talking about a dark street with perhaps 1, 2 street lights.
Even using the phone on a mini tripod with camera apps where you can take control of exposure settings and adjust ISO (higher ISO for dark environments - shows very slight improvements at best) I HAVE seen shots taken in dark settings - with much different lighting / in the middle of the a city, stage lighting like a concert, night shots in Times Sq. NYC...and well, that's different, those shots, videos are far more impressive. Personally I have yet to try the camera in these kind of settings though. Hoping to get into downtown Philly in the next few days and try that out.
Battery..it's already been mentioned many times here the 8+ is better and I agree. I took both phones at 100% and did a 12 min time-lapse last night. When I was finished, the X (felt warmer like I mentioned) and showed a battery at 91%, the iPhone 8+...showed 98% which is insanely impressive I think. Quality of the HD video on both phones..equality nice. A nice benefit of the X taking video...the stabilization. It's not perfect, but it's better.
Again..still up in the air whether I should keep the X or not, My own issues are very minor compared to others. And again...for those who hate...and I do mean HATE the "notch," I admit I was wrong and made a big deal about nothing. * My own feeling about it, I know others notice that no matter what. I have time to decide.
Point blank, BOTH the 8+ and the X are beautiful devices!
