Hey everyone. I just got a 256 gig 8 plus (ive been using the bigger phones for the past few years) and while i love wireless charging and the better cameras and processor, i got to admit it is still a very borning phone.

Ive been debating getting the 10 for a while now. on the one hand im glad they redesignd it and went OLED but on the other hand, im still not crazy about that notch and face id seems to be slower in some situations.

internally i know i got a better battery and the same processor...so in theory with the exception of face id features everything should work the same across both phones..

what are your guys thoughts...stick with the 8plus and wait for a plus version of the x next year or go for broke lol...
I do understand this 1st World Problem! I got the 8+ on launch day..the design didn't "wow" me enough to get the X. Ugh, but the more I keep playing with the X in stores, yeah there is regret. (That notch I hated, well..it's not as horrific as I thought) The new gestures, the new look, new feel is what I do love about the phone - Spending 3 years with a 6+, then upgrading to 8+...sure its more powerful, but in some slight way in the back of my head this little voice says "you bought a phone that looks like 2014...) Nagging voice too.

The struggle is real...but the way I see it now, only 8 weeks after the 8 came out...the sell back for the phone dropped big time!! So selling this now...then getting the X, now the price just went way off the charts. I COULD do it...but I would REALLY in the end spending well over 1300, 1400 bucks for my 2nd phone in two months (taking a big loss in trade in value, then spending 1k on the X), it doesn't make sense now. Ah well.

My mistake perhaps was I should have stuck with my sluggish 6+, waited until Nov 3, then decide between 8+ and X. If I got the 8+ and was bored, at least I could have returned it and swapped it for the x with no $ loss
Live and learn.

The good news is, now we're looking at TEN months until the new phones - a much bigger "X" perhaps which I would love. Already insane how the past 2 months since the keynote, iPhone 8/8+ pre-orders have flown! So at least time is flying...for now. Just have to get through a LOOOONG winter.

I'd go for the X now or if you want something a little more economically feasible for the time being, 7 Plus. You don't even notice the notch when using and Face ID works great. If you don't use landscape, no reason for the Plus size.
I second. X is the best iPhone compared to incremental upgrade iPhone 8 from iPhone 7.

I would recommend keeping your 8+. I purchased one last month and now have the X. After using the 8+ for a month I actually miss it. It's a solid phone with a classic design pretty much perfected. While I like my X, I quickly realized that I didn't really need it and could have easily lived with the 8+ for the next year until the next gen X is released.

But is it worth it when you already have an 8+?

As an 8+ owner, I would say no. What it boils down to for me is that the X doesn't actually do anything that the 8+ doesn't except FaceID and animojis, and I'm not particularly impressed by either of those features.

Yes, absolutely. The form factor, gestures, screen, 120hz touch input, and Face ID are all worth the upgrade. Makes for a much different/better experience.

I think that the X is a fantastic device, but I can't wrap my head around the idea that it's the greatest leap in iPhone history while the the 8 (or more specifically, the 8+) is "incremental", even though they have the same internals/benchmarks and almost all the same features. I completely understand preferring the OLED or smaller form factor, but they basically have the same functionality.

Not really sold on that, owning the 8+ and having used the X for a bit. I didn't even know about the 120hz. But if that stuff matters to someone I don't know why they would buy the 8+ in the first place.

For me, it's absolutely the biggest leap. The front of the iPhone and the way we have interacted with it has essentially remained unchanged since 2007. Removal of the home button and the gesture based UI is a MAJOR risk for Apple. They seemed to have nailed it though. It may feel super natural and not that big of change, and THAT is what makes it so great. They took a function that we were all so used to and seamlessly transitioned to a gesture based UI without losing a beat. It's impressive.

That's fine. I mean there's the old way of doing things and the new way. No wrong way. Just depends on what the user prefers.

True, but if you already have an 8+, those features are not necessarily worth the upgrade especially since next year's model might be better.

There will always be something better next year. You might want to actually wait until 2019, I think THAT is going to be the phone to get. Point is, something better next year, doesn't make the X any less great right now. Again, up to the individual, but I couldn't go back to a home button and touch ID.

Right, but for me the question still remains, does it actually allow you to do anything new, or does it just change how you do the same things?

Oh, I could easily go back to a home button. The face ID is great but sometimes my phone is sitting on my desk so in order to unlock it (without using the code) I need to lift it up off the desk. With touch ID, you don't need to do that. It gets annoying real quick.

Like you said, personal choice but since I've owned both, if I had to do it again, I wouldn't have purchased the X.

If the phone had no OS or apps, it would be a supremely boring slab of metal and glass. It only comes alive with an OS and apps.

So if you are bored, you are bored of the OS and apps. A new phone with the same OS and apps isn't going to change that for very long. Even the excitement over a bigger phone won't last if you are bored with the software.

It changes everything you do on the phone. Coupled with the best screen on a phone and 120hz input, the difference is huge to me. I can see that it's not for you, which is totally fine. They should keep selling the old models for a few more years.

Fair enough, enjoy the 8.

No, nothing new. Just different.

What would you like to do that's new? iOS is a platform to use your apps, get your information, and communicate. It's up to app developers to get you to do something "new." Apple is just improving their platform, which they absolutely did.
[doublepost=1510859797][/doublepost]Man, if the X is nothing new, the 8 Plus must be a real snooze fest.

I have an 8 Plus which I chose over the X having spent time with both. I’m a big watcher of Video on my phone so that’s what sealed the deal for me.

  • iPhone 8 Plus - watch 16:9 content uncompromised.
  • iPhone X - watch 16:9 content cropped with a notch in the way or uncropped with vertical bars. Actual video size is virtually the same as a regular iPhone 6/7/8.

The thinner bezel design is very nice, FaceID is just different and the incremental camera improvements aren’t evident unless shooting in very low light.

Bottom line, if Video is important to you, get a Plus and/or wait until next year to upgrade.

I will just put it this way. If you use your 8 Plus for a lot of video, keep it. Right now video viewing is a downgrade. I would wait for the X Plus. I am because I tried out the X and returned it for the video size.
I got a day or two to decide...i do share your feeling about it...somewhat. I could use a bit wider screen.

I had an 8 Plus and got the X on launch day as well. The first 3 days, I didn't like the X and went back to my 8 Plus. But, after a day, I decided to give the X another try and I've stuck with it since. I sold my 8 Plus early this week.

To be honest, I don't think that either the 8/8+ or the X are big "must have" updates over the 7. I upgraded from a 6, over which this year's phones offer a number of benefits and new features. In my opinion almost every single year upgrade is incremental, which is why I tend to upgrade every 2-3 years instead of after just 1 year (or after just 6 weeks in the case of people going from an 8 to an X).

120hz input? Input felt the same on my 7+ as the X. Your not talking about pro motion are you? Because thats only on the iPad pros right now.

Same dilemma but deciding btwn 8 Plus or X. Coming from 6s Plus.

this is a text to my son so am just pasting it, lazy typer

"Played with X and 8 Plus at Best Buy. I think the X is nicer and better display. Looked at movies in landscape and didn’t think I lost enough vertical to matter. The movies seemed slightly brighter and nicer colors. Brighter than 8 Plus and 8 Plus still has yellow tint even with True Tone off. I like it whiter. I can adjust X to my liking. Put text on large and very readable even on smaller screen. Crisper too. It and the 8 Plus seem harder to get into landscape than my 6s Plus. Maybe they changed accelerometer to make it harder. Hit and miss on swiping up for app switcher. Guess I wasn’t doing it on right spot on screen. But, I really liked it. 8 Plus felt old. I tried both iPhones bc I wasn’t sure on a smaller screen for me coming from a Plus. But, it was fine. Camera seemed more crisp on the same photo taken in store. Was looking at boxes on shelf at end of store. 8 Plus was a little blurrier. Not much, but X better."

I kept thinking about all the posts on the smaller "narrower" screen and was curious. So, I had both side by side. I didn't feel the difference was anywhere near enough to not get the newer iPhone. The keyboard, although smaller, was no issue and no typing errors. Beautiful iPhone.

That's an excellent comparison. The smaller form factor of the X is great but it does have obvious drawbacks. I'm keeping my X and gave my 8+ to my son but I definitely could have lived with my 8+ for another year.

I didnt really notice the increase in resolution until i saw text. Its razor sharp, like im wearing glasses.
