I am using Apple AI on my base 8gb M2 MBA with the latest version of Sequoia 18.2. Smooth as butter. Not a hitch or an issue.
So it doesn't need 16GB to run then. Sure it will work better maybe with 16GB and 8GB of ram these days is a bit naff and have been for a few years to be honest.

I read the reason why 16GB is standard in the M4 machines is because of the way it is produced, not so much that Apple want to give people 16GB. It was that or disabling 8GB.

How much of that is true, i don't know

Apple increased ram on all of their their “M” processor Macs to 16GB just recently for AI reasons as most Apple AI runs on the Mac vs remote servers
I read differently, the reason was technical

I am surprised that Apple have not bugged me to update to Sequoia 18.2, that is better than Microsoft, who forces people to update. I may update tonight.
