Clearly the Beats and AirPods are not overpriced enough...

I would only consider Apple over-ear 'phones if they included active noise cancellation, and only if they sounded better than Bose or Sony's latest offerings. Otherwise, I'll pass.

Depends on price, performance, and Apple induced restrictions. I’ve never been able to use Apple earphones because they don’t fit or stay in my ears. This includes either their wired earphones that they have included with a new phone for ‘free’ and the Airpods, which I tried at an Apple store. They pop out after a minute or two. My ear and their design aren’t compatible I guess.

Apple killed off their Wi-Fi router and display departments, haven’t updated the Mac Pro in over four years, and haven’t updated the Mac Mini in over three years.

Why they see headphones as a bigger more important than those four things is odd. But then again, watchbands are a bigger priority to Apple than those four things.
New Mac Pro coming this year, new displays coming this year, and the Mac mini doesn't cell in todays computer climate. Why they still cell it is a mystery to me.

Not sure why so many praise the M50x. I think the M40x sounds better from what I remember. But I much prefer my Sennheiser HD598s while I wait on their HD6XX and HD58X from Massdrop. I also have the AirPods.

I do wish those that somehow the AirPods were more noise cancelling if at all possible. But they do sound great otherwise.

I really liked the m40x when I had them, but the hinge broke. The M40x's are a fantastic headphone, but the m50x I notice seems to have better bass.

I can't decide who is more obnoxious on internet forums whenever headphones are discussed. Apple fans, or Audio-Technica fans.

I'll admit most AT headphones sound awesome if you're in a quiet area and aren't moving at all. It's too bad their cheapo squeaky ugly plastic bodies absolutely ruin the experience. I'm not one to put form over function, but c'mon, the look and feel of AT headphones is terrible, and that does matter when choosing headphones.

Yeah, I wish they were a bit more premium feeling and looking. But that would increase the price, and their build isnt THAT bad, it's just average. And I'm ok with that for the price.

Let’s be real here. By going by apple’s recent track record, we won’t see these in 2018. No doubt they will be delayed, like pretty much every product they announce.
Agree 100%.

"Late 2018" to Apple really means "Early 2019" which really means "Mid 2019." Ohhh Apple, you cannot fool us, haha.

:apple:

To be clear, Apple haven't 'announced' anything that is specifically related to this rumour. It's an analyst suggesting that they might.

If Apple can accomplish with these over-ear headphones what they accomplished with the HomePod (i.e. sound that exceeds the quality of its competitors and uses some really cool and innovative technology to accomplish it) then I will be purchasing these.

Look, the reality is that you pay a premium with Apple because the user experience is just better than it is with products outside the walled garden. I assume the forum-posters on macrumors dot com agree with me here. IMO, the premium is worth it. To others, it might not be. If that's the case, the solution is simple: don't buy the product in question.

Yeah, because we alll know that AirPods can’t sync up and play stereo. Oh wait....
It was a joke. Also, in some instances on an every three or so day basis, my AirPods do in fact lose sync with each other, and crackled and drop their signal on a daily basis

I find it odd that apple would want to compete against beats for this one. Unless they're thinking of something outrageously different for over-the-ear headphones.

They are looking to make high end audio, that would be a in separate category from the Beats headphones. ZING! ;)

I always laugh when I see the words "high end" and "earphones" being used together. If you want to feel music, you have to listen loud and you have to have a pair of good floor speakers. Listening to music through headphones is a joke imo.

What headphones did you try out that brought you to this conclusion? Brand and model?

I no I no  your about the 100th person to say this. I should have said if apple “do” release this. I wouldn’t be surprised if it was delayed. Just as AirPods and HomePod was. People are so sensitive on Mac Rumours...

Unless these are independent (no head band, like AirPods) I don't see the point of these over Solo/Studio3's. Hope to be blown away.

The HD800's are audiophile-class headphones. And in the audiophile headphones world, anything that's closed is pretty much irrelevant.

Axel Grell would disagree wth your assumption, he would point you to a closed headphone that rivals the HD800s in soundstage, transparencies, and detail. There’s another great closed back but it’s not quite HD800s but rivals many open back $1000+ headphones, the ÆON flow closed back, spot on the harman target response curve. Mind you the HD800S was dethroned by Focals Utopia and Clear audiophile grade headphones. Don’t forget the Sony MDR-Z1R, one of the best closed back.

Though if you deep pockets you could go end game:

1) Sennheiser HE1 = $55,000
2) Stax SR-009 + Chord DAVE DAC + Woo Audio WES tube amp = $21,000
3) Focal Utopia + Woo Audio WA-234 Mono Block amps + Chord DAVE DAC = $33,000

Back to a possible Apple HiFi Headphone, I see them competing with MidFi headphones and will probably be overpriced but have features that make it worth the retail price if you’re in the Apple ecosystem. The headphone market has become a little mental lately with the prices new models are getting released at, look at the list above, that’s just 3 out of hundreds of combos if you have very deep pockets. Apple will compete with headphones around the B&W PX price/sound; MidFi at best.

AirPods I get as an Apple branded product, but surely this should be a Beats branded product? Or are we saying Beats are going to dodo?
Apple is doing it not Beats if you read the article correctly

Really? Homepod is one of the worst sounding audio devices I've heard.
Let's see are you yourself a audiophile? This comment sounds a bit biased for me to try to understand. Also please be specific of how they sound bad and what songs did you play to test the audio quality and volume level

Lol.... why do you feel the need to validate yourself on an internet forum about consumer electronics?
Lol.... have you read critical comments from forums members here holding people accountable?

Did you want a pat on the back or something?

Oh wait, no need. You’re already patting yourself on the back!!

YES! Thank you.

If you read my comment correctly, you would see that whilst i understood Apple were making them, that my opinion was that this should be a Beats product unless they are getting rid of the Beats brand.

I feel like Apple is probably going to move Beats downstream in price. They really serve two market segments. Beats is more personable and more attractive to the younger generation. I think the issue is if Apple releases a similar product at the current $350 price point, than what's the point of it all.

If the sound signature was agreeable, this is something I’d buy. I need a pair of wireless headphones for when I’m out and about, and would like something that provides more security, better isolation and better sound quality than AirPods. I have a pair of Audeze LCD4s at home, and it’s a real letdown to use Apple Earbuds on the go...and at the same time, the audiophile bluetooth headphone market is pretty thin...if they can build something along those lines, I’m in.

Please detail how exactly they’re overpriced and what they should actually be priced at.

Note - “something I can afford” is not an answer.

I can't wait for more "audiophile" complaints. How dare they call something high end if it doesn't cost more than $10,000

Typical comment from someone who doesn't realize what 'audiophile' means and thinks AirPods is it. It's not about the price. It's about the quality. Often that doesn't come cheap. Skoda may make decent cars these days but they're still not Rolls Royce no matter what they do. Try both and you know why. And yes, there are many nice options in between, both in audio world and car world. Sometimes 'nice' just isn't enough.

They recently came out with new MacBooks, new iMac, new iMac Pro, and are working on the new Mac Pro. Other than Mac mini, what exactly would you consider "focusing" on the Mac?
Well, when talking 'screenless machines' we are still waiting for an end of the drought. "Working on" is not a shipping product or even the announcement of one (as they did for the iMac Pro which was clearly a stopgap measure, the one they were able to create in a shorter time frame). What worries me a bit is that there are no leaks whatsoever from the production side that hints at new desktops. That could mean the desktop upgrades are still far off. We could see something like an announcement at WWDC and delivery during next Fall/Winter.

The Beats Studio 2's I own, which are "over the ear" headphones not "on the ear" like the Beats Solo's are extremely comfortable. I wear glasses and also own the Beats Solo 2's, and am going to be selling them because they absolutely make my ears hurt so bad after about 30 minutes of wearing them. With the Studio's, I can wear them for hours and they do not hurt my ears at all, except maybe my eardrums if I play them at full blast, haha.

So comfort should not be an issue with these Apple branded headphones.

:apple:
Hopefully. And they need to be lightweight like boss. I’m just worried because Apples earphones hurt so bad. There like sticking legos into your head
