Ha! I'm just saying the reason I like the Macs is not necessarily the OS, but the design and sleekness of the computer. If the Dell Studio had OSX, I wouldn't necessarily buy it even if it had a quad/4gb ram, etc.
Ha, me too. I like the MacBook Pro for it's sleek looks and aluminum case but Windows 7 has REALLY closed the gap with OS X including Snow Leopard. I have an iMac with Snow Leopard and Windows 7 and Windows 7 rocks, I actually use it more than I do Snow Leopard believe it or not. If you like to tinker with your OS, W7 has more things to play with like themes etc. Now I know that's not important to everyone but if you like that sort of thing it's cool. It's also fast as all get out and solid as a rock in my opinion.

I'd pay 1499 for the same combo from apple."

ha -- who wouldnt? the problem is apple would charge much closer to 3499.

and im not kidding -- http://store.apple.com/us/configure/MB986LL/A?mco=Nzk2MDg1Mg

$2650 for a core 2 duo 4GB & integrated graphics. i think its safe to say you could tack on a solid G or so for an i7 + 4850.

outrageous. im glad i dont have any stock in apple right now.

I actually dumped my Apple shares 2 months ago. I did quite well over the last 4 years but I really think Win7/i7 is going to nullify anything Apple will do for the next year (possibly 2). And all the fan-kiddies and MS-haters here can say otherwise (and I'm sure they will) but OSX will indeed see a lot of defectors.

I'm sure others will consider doing this as well but ultimately OSX is what sells macs. I on the other hand am probably one of those rare users that went to the mac for the build quality. I can live with just about any OS for everyday use.

Your not alone. I came back to Mac after years on Windows machines. My last laptop before my MBP was a Dell studio. A nice laptop but built so so, creaky and cheap and ***** Vista just about gave fits every few days. The last straw was when Vista ran an update that completely corrupted its own OS and needed to be reinstalled. And I might add the Dell support knows less about there product than I generally did. Dellhell.....

Windows does not have Grand Central Dispatch. The cores will sit idling and sucking down energy without any benefit for most users.

Battery life is dismal, so it's not really a laptop or a portable.

??

Up until Snow Leopard, there was no grand central dispatch. Since SL was released, people have been complaining about lowered battery life and hotter laptops... So I really don't understand your approach. So by your logic, up until SL, Macs have been sucking (OS X didn't have grand central dispatch until about a month ago)

That alone is not the reason why Macs are better.

And battery life, please check with your nearest watch dog. My friend's Dell is off socket for any entire day. 8 hours, none stop. He even plays WoW on it. I'm like, you don't bring your charger to school? He asks me why? It's a hassle. I have to lug around my macbook pro charger with me all the time, since my battery only lasts around 2 hours now (3 if I turn everything to lowest, do nothing but surf none flash websites and write things)

Apple obviously no longer offers the best bang for someone's buck. Their hardware is months to years behind the PC curve and you're paying a premium to get it. I only buy apple laptops because they have an edge over other laptops due to the excellent industrial design but laugh at people who guy Mac pros and iMacs. I'm sitting on a Core i7 desktop that will rape any Mac Pro ever built (including the near 5k ones), and it only cost me a nice 1.7k.

Why are people getting so worked up because someone posted a thread stating that the specs on a new dell was tempting? Or that windows 7 looked promising?

Competition and choice are ALWAYS good for consumers. Personal preferences aside, every hardware design and OS has merits and shortcomings. Checking out a new dell on a mbp is NOT the same as looking at a hot girl while walking with your wife at the mall. Apple having to innovate and compute harder is not a bad thing for us, the consumers.

If windows 7 is secure and reliable, and gives me a better choice of hardware at cheaper price points, who knows, I might switch back when my glassy macbook dies.

Mac is my computer, NOT my religion.

BTW, has anyone hackintoshed one of these puppies yet? Win-win!

vista was awful but richard is right about 7 + i7. that combo, for the prices theyre able to sell at, is a mac killer unless apple catches up soon. anyway, im new to this site but one thing i love about it is it seems to be devoid of those fanboy types you describe. just objective, somewhat cynical apple fans. hopefully theyll start listening.

"Could quadcore load, say, Apple.com faster than dual core?"

hrm, only if youve got 2 cores more or less maxed out, which is extremely unlikely. the problem w/ 2 vs 4 cores, or core 2 duo vs i7, isnt an issue at all right now for the vast majority of users. as richard says its for the next year or two, as the i7 is obviously the hardware platform of the near future. there just doesnt seem to be a good reason to buy an apple computer right now & for the past few months, if you plan on making a ~2 year investment, as most do when they buy a new comp. hopefully the new imacs will at least have arrandale (2 faster cores/4 threads) + a quality gfx card, with the macbooks to follow suit soon after.

actually id say the mac pro is prob the one apple product somewhat competitive with PCs. not for the price though, of course. im hoping theres a massive h/w overhaul for macs in Q1 2010. its basically nothing short of a necessity at this point.

Can't we all just get over this already and ultimately admit that we buy apple products for the looks and not the specs?

And in terms of virus protection--if you're going to use that against windows as failing--I highly suggest you don't, since it means you don't know jack **** about how to protect your investment freely and easily. After a fresh install, its very simple. AVG free, update. CCleaner. Defrag. Firefox adblock plus registered to easy US server. Don't watch porn or open emails about a Nigerian needing money to evade domestic political quarrels and would reward you millions in return (if you do watch porn, use firefox private or chrome incognito to prevent the saving of temp files/cookies, etc). Still get a virus? L2mirror image your disk after fresh install and the above, then transfer over. Takes 10 minutes to make, 10 minutes to do.

God I hate how people bash on windows for being a virusmagnet, when its the PEOPLE not the MACHINE. The only argument thats given is that mac users are too lazy to take a day to learn about prevention and safety, and would prefer to have it out of the box and expect it. Sure, that's reasonable, but lazy too.

With that said, I love the 8hr 30min batterylife that I get on my mbp15'' 2.66 for when I'm at school using word doc. Makes my backpack so much lighter to not carry around extra batteries/charger =]. Plus the girls oogle at how pretty it is (No matter how you slice it, apple purchases are more about looks than functionality, especially to the average consumer, who find its justifiable to pay the extra premium for such a reason).

Just made $1900 notebook from Dell.com. It has everything I want... But I just can't go back to windows. I hope Apple can catch up soon. :)

I'm buying my Mac for software reasons. That's Apple's biggest aid to me along with their marketing.

I agree. My Dell 1720 has never had a problem with any virus. And, Vista has run great on it.

Having said that, I love the thinness of mbps. Also, the 7 hr battery is sweet.

However, new laptops, with Windows 7, great specs, and lower prices, are coming out. Apple is going to really get bashed in the commercials with windows laptops.

Unfortunately, i've had a number of bad experiences with my Dell Laptop, which was the ultimate reason why i bought a mac, even though Dell will offer better specs for a lot cheaper.

On the other hand, Dell's warranty is great - they'll send someone to your house to replace parts, no need to send away etc.

Apple will catch up, give them some time :p

Bravo! I posted because I wanted these specs in a mac, lol. Some people seem to interpret it as a personal attack on their computer/religion.

Hats off to Dell!

People have a low opinion of Dell and Microsoft, and much of it is deserved. However, they are delivering some pretty exciting products. Also, Dell does not cripple products the way Apple does, look at Dell 3008 panel... good scaler and tons of input options then look at the 24 ACD, one input (a poorly adopted one) and limited scaler.

Incidentally, I just ordered a 17 inch MBP today, because it can do 1920 X 1200, something totally lacking in the 15 inch MBP. Also, Apple laptops fell more solid, at least relative with others in BestBuy for the last few years.

Dells are just too plastic - fantastic for me, at least in the 15+ inch form factor. If they can get a more solid laptop for a good price... then hackintosh here I come.

NO, and don't speak for the rest of us either. I've never bought a Mac because it looked nice, for me it's always been for what it offers that's not on the PC side. Don't use the word WE, speak for yourself. I have no idea why people post here, they act like they hate Macs and Apple, so why come here? Go to a Windows forum where you can be comfortable with the rest of the PC fans that try to make the computers run like a Mac. :p

You might call it lazy, but I don't think any computer user should HAVE TO carry out any of the tasks you listed above...

Thats one area where I will hold my hands up. With my studio (currently boxed up awaiting recollection on monday) I ordered the 15.6 full HD screen and it was one of the best laptop screens I have seen. Very bright, incredible detail, and matte (take the hint apple!!!!!)

But one thing i cant knock apple for is the build quality. Although in need of a new battery, my 12" iBook G4 is still going strong and hardware wise, not had a single problem with it in the four years I have had it.

Not had chance to play with windows 7 yet, will no doubt put it on my MBP when I get it, but its definitely sounding promising from what I have read on here.

Dell is always really fast when it comes to jamming the newest stuff into their laptops. And those new Dells are tempting. Personally I'm looking forward to seeing what happens with the Dell's Mobile Precision line--those are some sexy notebooks, and they will probably be made even sexier when refitted for the i7.

Apple has a few key advantages over its competitors, but admittedly they are not looking as invulnerable as they were during Vista's heyday. Windows 7 is a strong competitor to OSX, and other vendors are starting to close the gap when it comes to form factor while simultaneously taking advantage of some of Apple's design weaknesses (lacking many good ports, for instance). But excellent innovations like the multitouch trackpad have managed to keep Apple a step ahead.

That's why I'm personally going to wait and see what Apple's next i7 notebook will look like before I make any purchase. Apple may very well have something up their sleeve that sets them apart again.

I think FM radio in the nano line was it. :D

Personally, if I could pose as Steve Jobs for 6 months I'd issue a standing company mandate to:

A.) Remove the superdrive from all macbooks
B.) Develop an "Apple Branded" USB powered external drive
C.) Include the external drive for free.
D.) Cut macbook pricing by 5-10%
E.) Give everybody named "Richard" free macbooks for life.

Ok, maybe I wouldn't be able to get "E" past the board but after extracting the useless superdrive I'd let the engineering teams run amuck... finding new uses for all that extra room. (engineers do the most amazing things even when given the tiniest space to work with).

But really... I can't imagine anything earth shattering coming up with the macbook/pros. Looks, stability, build quality, and now battery life... these features are the earmarks of these machines and they already have that. But if history is anything to look at, Apple is always slow in adopting new CPU/Graphics "power" technology or they ignore it entirely. They are a niche market by choice and will always be just that.

And Vista has done more for mac sales than anything else. This was a gift and Apple brilliantly seized on it. There will however be no such "gift" with Windows 7. The virus fear-mongoring has been played to death and I can't imagine what "mac" will goad PC about in the commercials after its release.

Maybe the macs will do FM radio. :D
