What does that post about the value of a BlackBook have to do with anything? Honestly? That BlackBook became my sister's new computer, and I was primarily looking for it for her. You're a troll in this thread, as far as I'm concerned. Get a life. I don't know how many times I have to say I don't care a whit about hype. I'm not you. Reading comprehension clearly isn't your strong suit.

To everyone else after my last post - thank you. I appreciate the comments and I will make a decision in the next day or so.

You come off sounding like a bitch. I'm just saying... If you're not worried about the money, just return it for the MB. What's the big deal?

I say stick with the MBP i'm sure you will get used to the weight in no time. It will be hard at first but then you probably wont even notice it.

You've got a few days to see if you get used to it. My old Lenovo is about a pound heavier than my MBP, and it is noticeable. The lighter weight is nice both carrying it and when it's on my lap.

My son's new 2.4 is a very nice machine and feels much lighter than my MBP due to the smaller size and actual weight diff. I'd trade my 2.2 mbp for it if I had better eyes. if your vision is still good, spend the extra $'s and get what you want. The restocking fee is less than the sales tax you'd eat her in Cali so probably easiest to just return and don't look back imo.

I think it's either your bag or the lack of weight training. One pound difference between both units.

Really? to heavy for your shoulder that you carried 50 lbs of books on durring Highschool / college?

... i'm not trying to be rude, but i think maybe you are thinking more of the money factor and trying to find other reasons to return it other than the money...

If you can afford to keep it man, keep it it is a much better computer and seriously if it is that heavy, carry it in a backpack or something.

+1 and all the others about the weight. Your discomfort probably comes from the bag. Bring your MBP to the store to pick up a new bag so you can get the most comfortable setup

Wow, helpful and non-judgmental post of the year. You really felt like you had to post up a reply to say that? How about not insulting random people you've never met who haven't said a word to you?

When I mentioned money, it was to say that the price difference between the MacBook and MBP wasn't a factor. However, of course anyone would care and consider the cost of a restocking fee.

Anyway, I'm done. I've gotten enough helpful (and non-helpful) responses.

You do come across as whiney, can you not think for yourself? Sell it or exchange it. Nuff said.

I'm not sure what kind of "help" you expect; you've used both a MBP and a MB in the past, so you have first-hand experience with both. I don't think any advice you get here will be superior to that direct experience.

It sounds to me like you've really come to appreciate the smaller form factor and lighter weight of the MB. That's entirely understandable. The only question I'd be asking myself is whether the smaller screen will be satisfactory when running apps like FCP and PS. If you've already used these on your BlackBook and find the experience acceptable, then if I were you I'd go with the lighter, smaller machine! Chalk up the restocking fee to one of life's lessons learned the hard way! ;)

I think this is an excellent answer, you already have experience with both so you'll probably be the best judge. I will make some suggestiosn though.

One thing I would look into is into getting a "roller" bag. I've seen some that look pretty professional, but if thats not professional enough then I would look into getting a shoulder strap that is wider. Personally, I hate those sling bags. They just kill my shoulder and they make me feel like a weakling so they kill my ego too :p

Anyways, the shoulder straps that are wider help ease some of the pain.

Lastly I would wait a few days before making your decision. A few months back I gave my gf my tablet pc which was a 12" laptop that weighed 3.5lbs and I took her larger 15" 6lb notebook. I did it as a favor for her and it took a while to get used to the larger notebook but after a while you do get used to handling the bigger notebooks.

If you are going to keep the notebook for a long time then I would think more about going for the macbook pro. I don't know what the future holds but it seems people are going to focus on trying to use the gpu for general computing purposes. The faster gpu in the macbook pro will mean your computer will last you longer if this is the direction things go.

Stick with the MBP for a week and then make your decision; any change in size/weight is going to feel uncomfortable at first. I just don't think it makes sense to pay the high restocking fee to downgrade your computer. That said, it also doesn't make sense to drop 2k+ on a computer that you're not 100% sure you like.

Here's a piece of advice:
Take the time to properly evaluate your options before you make a decision. Too bad your ivy league education couldn't teach you some common sense...

You may not be a bitch, but you certainly sound like a spoiled brat.

Im not even gonna read anymore that the opening post.

If you say the 5.5lbs is hurting your shoulder? and would rather have a 4.5lb laptop instead... you need to go to the Gym more.

1lb should not break the bank here. If you are sore for 1lb extra, you sir dont need a laptop at all. Just mail it to me for free, and dont use anything.

Keep it. Firewire 800, the other ports.

From what I've heard, the screens on the macbooks don't display color as well as the Macbook Pros.

And I appreciate the extra screen real estate. The weight doesn't bother me. At all.

They are the same screen! same DPI, same backlight, same coating...

I wouldnt say its the same screen. one is a 1280x800 and the mbp is a 1440x900, but yes both have led backlighting.

But both panels are TN and it depends on which oem the panel is from to judge the quality. Both the macbook and the macbook pro uses various different oem for the panels.

Even if you are going to pursue "casual" gaming, the MBP is a keeper with a separate GPU. I have both, albeit last year's models and I definitely prefer my Pro, for everything except kitchen web surfing right now:)

I got a kick out of both the OP and this comment.

My only personal notebook is an old Powerbook G4 12". It has also been relegated the the role of kitchen web surfing.

Long story short, I now require an up to date notebook for a small business I'm involved in. It'll be mostly "docked" but I will need it for occasional travel. I picked up a new 2.53GHz MBP yesterday and it seems HUGE because I'm used to the 12". In fact the 15.4 at home reminds me of the 17" looked in the Apple store. It's all relative.

I keep mentally going in circles thinking I could have a 13" MB and that upcoming 24" LED display for roughly the same price. Then again, I have some firewire devices and will really appreciate being able to do some hotel-room gaming one day.

if money is NO ISSUE.

take it back, take the restocking hit, get your MB, and call it a day. In the end it cost you what, 200$ to get what you want? thats not much for the piece of mind for years.

I avoid craiglists with high ticket items for many reasons. I too am surprised at the majority of posts on here questioning you. You stated your reasons, thats that

:) I do get a kick out of these type of questions though, cause in reality, none of these posts will help you make your mind up (not you, but people in general).

I say suck it up, and go get that MB before the weekend is here. Thank me later haha

You know, I did think once I'd posted it that I'd most likely get the kind of crap I ended up getting. But I was hoping for some insight, or more accurately, hearing from people in a similar situation/decision. Some people can't help but be snarky and rude off the bat on internet forums. In the future, I'll just put people on ignore rather than respond and, hilariously, become the one who gets called a b**** and other things.

You're right, the decision will really be mine based on my experience and my gut feeling. I guess I was just looking for some extra opinions on the matter. It's more than just the 1lb difference (thanks for the gym suggestions, guys, but I do go quite often), it's the overall size increase. It feels bigger than my old MBP to me. Anyway, thanks to kgeier82, videofreek and others.

She's a woman, ha! Anyways, when I had a 15" it was a bit of a pain to carry around, but when I was actually using it the extra screen space made it totally worth it. The new MBP is larger in length x width, so you're not imagining it being bigger than the previous model

Well if a 13" screen and a 15" screen both ran at the same resolution (1440x900) when they wouldn't be the same... the 13" screen would have a higher DPI...
;)

resolution is proportional to the size of the screen... in most cases anyway

As others have said. You should be completly happy with your purchase. In febuary i bought a MacBook and it was perfect, no problems, super fast all of that. But i couldnt get over the 13 inch screen. So i sold it on ebay (well its on ebay right now.. still not sold. 799 with a free iPod touch.. any offers? lmao) But i bought one of the new MacBook pros and i am completly happy.

The better speakers, better screen, larger screen, and the nvidia graphics card is quite an improvement. Id imagine you spend alot of time on your computer, why spend the entire duration of your computer time on a computer your not happy with. I say go with what you wish. Those MacBooks are tasty, no lie.

It's not a money issue at all. Why would I lie or obfuscate on an internet forum? I'm a 27-year-old woman, a grad student, an Ivy League grad, and consider myself fairly well versed in tech things. I'm not some kid spending the rent money on a MBP.

I'm surprised at how little these responses have helped or stayed on topic. Again, THE MONEY IS NOT A FACTOR. Obviously if I'm going to essentially toss $189 in the trash, I want it to be the best choice for me. It's not simply the 1lb difference, the MBP is wider and in my hands I can feel the larger footprint. That's all. I was just trying to debate whether or not the MacBook would be a good choice given then restocking fee, etc.

I bought it yesterday because I'd been waiting months to purchase a laptop. And yes, the weight makes a difference with shoulder bags. I have a backpack I use frequently, which makes it much less of a factor, but a backpack is not always appropriate. In some circumstances I'd rather use a more business-like shoulder bag, etc.

Thanks to the one or two people who posted something helpful.

I would go with the computer that best fits your life. If you use a shoulder bag and the MBP hurts, I'd go macbook. When spending that kind of money, you should really get the computer you want most. Also if the macbook has enough features for you to be happy, I'd go for it. Hope that helps :D

See this thread:

If they are the same panel...something went terribly wrong with the MacBook.

The display was the tipping point for me. With the lugging around of textbooks, I was also sensitive about weight. However, the better screen alone is worth the weight and extra bucks to me. My advice is to stick with the MBP.

You're funny. You should read what you actually wrote. If you can't handle some playful insults you shouldn't go into any forum. Obviously I wasn't the only one who took exception to your posts. Seriously, we don't need more angry women in the world! Just chill!
