Amen! It gets worse when you start browsing the top-level generic categories, not a single option to restrict to iPad only. :(

Presumably when you browse with an iPad, or dock sync with one, it will default to that.

That's awesome that they approved that. I think its not good for the Kindle itself, but good for Amazon as a whole.

Nice Job Apple :)

And good for Apple.People keep thinking that the iTunes stores are some kind of big profit center for Apple that they jealously guard. It mainly exists to sell hardware. And it does. You might say the stores, especially the app store are one of the main features of many of their hardware products.

I was always skeptical Apple would do this, but am glad they did.

Now I think I can come up with a few good reasons why. It helps make their device more useful. It also makes the Kindle itself less useful. Sure people that believe e-ink is the only way to read an e-book will buy them, but most everyone else will go with an iPad like device, where they can get the books from Amazon and still use them on a different device.

wait so does this mean I can now purchase the subscription based services as well or just books? Beacuse with apples higher magazine costs I can get Kindle news and blogs much cheaper!

That's awesome, give consumers a choice rather then locking them into one system. Now if Amazon would just write an Amazon mp3 application for the iphone and iPad, we'd be golden. Of course, that would involve them making WhisperSync for their MP3 service, something the record labels may not allow them to do. ;)

Directly, of course not....
There is a way to *ahem* the DRM on Kindle .azw files, convert it to ePub and sync it on iTunes

Excuse me? You obviously didn't go look at the link on Amazon. The WhisperSync technology will automatically transfer your content between all your devices, iphone, ipad, and Kindle readers, and it even keeps in sync what the last page of the book you read is - so if you start reading it on your PC (using the kindle software) at home and then fire up Kindle on your ipad on the go, it will automatically take you to the page you last read.

Pretty sweet, and definitely makes the Kindle app the one to use on the iPad, skip right past Apple's book reader program!

No one said you had to use iBooks at all. Its optional app thats easily deletable.

I was really hoping that Apple wouldn't block the approval. I have just sold my Kindle 2 and Kindle DX and I am getting an iPad. It is great that I'll have access to all my Kindle books from day 1!

Ah the preverbal final nail in the Kindles coffin (e.i. A upgrade path for current users.)

This should really flood ebay with Kindles.

Huh? This is especially good for Apple. No-one is going to re-buy the same book again just because they also want an iPad. And Amazon still is the market leader in electronic book distribution. So on Apple's part, this is not "a nice job", it was the only smart move to make.

Too lazy to check at the moment: is there in-app book purchasing on the iPad version?

I don't know. But why would you need that? Amazon's website (including one-click-buy) is also accessible from the iPad, so there simply is no need to implement that feature.

Have downloaded this and made a copy of the app on my backup drive, just incase apple change their minds..
I'm really excited for the iPad now, and I don't even know when it will be available in my country, or price.

And this is both the death of the kindle and the biggest thing that the kindle can have happen to it.

Amazon can keep the content sales side, and not have to worry about the hardware side at all. They wanted to push digital media, and they have. They will win in the end.

Honestly I think the biggest problem is going to be for all e-ink readers that AREN'T the Kindle. Think about it, right now you could buy an iPad and have access to two competing marketplaces and get a really really nice colour large-format reader. If you then want a dedicated portable device for whatever reason you can grab a Kindle and load up all your (non Apple-DRM) books on there and get your week or two of battery life. Or you can use the same Kindle app to load those books onto an iPhone or iPad.

But why would you buy, for instance, the Barnes & Noble device? You're getting a relatively limited selection of books, no cross-compatibility, no access to iBooks... all of a sudden the Nook and similar readers look like a very, very bad deal indeed.

Barnes and Noble also have a iPhone app, but no one is talking about it for some reason. It'll also probably be updated for ipad

Wow, I bow to Apple for approving this App for launch day. They could have waited a few weeks and keep all the focus on it's new iBook Store.

Good Play Amazon

Good of Amazon to treat this as a free upgrade and not try to bring in a paid for-iPad-only variant (e.g. Kindle Reader HD). I've already got 4 other apps upgraded for free to 'universal' apps.
Note - iTunes does not list them as universal, instead as 'for iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad' a sensible solution that allows growth for future devices which would eventually render a app compatible only with the current 3 to be less than universal.

Kindle is a good name.

It kindled a fire under Apple's ass to get off the toilet and make a pad.

Seems like you are really enjoying this? Do you a have weird fetish you might want to tell us about?

ontopic: Amazon's not stupid, they obviously want to be part of the iPad, even if it cannibalizes Kindles sales, the brand and their distribution channel will be kept alive.

I take my hat off to Apple. I never thought they would accept this one. Now what about Grooveshark and Opera? Pretty please?

Do you know if Grooveshark has submited anything, Apple has approved lots and lots of music apps.

Just got my new iPad at the Oak Orchard Apple store (Skokie, IL) two hours ago. Downloaded several of my Kindle books from my Amazon Kindle account with no problem. They look great! I can now read charts and illustrations easily for the first time with this ereader---such a pain on the Kindle.

I think this is going to become my preferred ereader for all my Kindle books. Probably will auction my Kindle 2 on ebay next week. But Amazon has the superior library...

Kindle iPad app question

I'm a European using a US iTunes account. I can obviously download the Kindle app but would I be able to purchase any books? I have no US credit card or anything like that.
